In addition to your primer on the AT I want to thank you for introducing me to Her's. Of course when I read up on them I was totally gutted. We're all just riding on this rock.

Great trip, well done... reminds me of times long ago. In 1971 trekked the overland hippy trail from London to Singapore deviating side trips to Nepal, Jiri to Everest base camp (around 50% walking). Other biggish treks Santiago to LA staying as much as possible to the west coast of S America. Darwin to Melbourne anticlockwise along the coast of Western Australia. No cell phone, no GPS, no Gopro, no money, no real escape route if trouble occurred. More recently Patagonia, Madagascar, Venezuela (Mt Roraima) and then CV19 put a stop to everything....it's still a wonderful world we live in....

She actually planned to summit several days before us but fell and split her knee open right before Monson, so we were able to hustle through the 100-mile and catch her!! The trail really does provide although maybe she wishes it didn't have to provide in that particular way haha

I know it's late but GRATS!! An AT thru hike has been lingering in my mind since I was 14 and read about it over my dads shoulder. He was reading a National Geographic at the time and said, 'Oh Boy. I'd love to do that.' He never did, but the idea has been stumbling along in my noggin since that day. I'm almost 60 now. So much wasted time.

Robert Shields, check out Kevin Newsome Appalachian trail videos. It might give you the encouragement to still do it. He did a 2021 through hike. I believe he turned 68 on the trail.

Ali, just watched your 5 minute video! Interesting that my son and I are planning on leaving Amicalola Falls Feb. 20th, 2022 and are planning on approximately 155 days to summit. We are hoping those first 6 to 8 weeks aren't too cold and/or snowy! Thanks for the quick overview!

The part about your body being fit only for hiking is so true. By the end of my hike I was both the fittest I’ve been and simultaneously completely exploded. The trail changes your body a lot and I’m not sure how long it takes to recover and feel normal again. But I wouldn’t change anything :)
@aliwhite6541
@aliwhite6541 2 года назад
Right?? I feel like the trail really wrecked my body past mile 1200 and I had hiker hobble for like 3 weeks after finishing! Next time I might make getting enough protein more of a priority... but yes either way it's all part of the experience :) :)
@estebangarcia5827
@estebangarcia5827 2 года назад
@@aliwhite6541 I think you actually might be onto something with the protein though, I'm vegan and I do think the lack of protein contributed to my body's difficulty in recovering towards the end; although, it may have also been hiking 2,000 plus miles haha. Anyways, I hope you feel 100%. The video was great, it really captures the vibe.

No Bear? I thought everyone saw the bear in the zoo the AT passes through. My first encounter with bears was coming around a corner and spotting two bear cubs playing on the trail about 50 feet in front of me with no mama in sight. Where's mama? Scared me half to death. Cubs ran off and mama never appeared. Hood Ornament, Section Hiker, 1993-2007.
