4:11 - favorite part of the video. Your cat and your smile. Too awesome. Thanks for the great book recommendations. I've always loved Sorolla and I need to get a book on his art. The Traditional Oil Painting book is on my list of wants now, as well. Years from now, some great oil painter is going to post a video on favorite books and I'll bet it will include a book of collected art by Andrew Tischler. Keep the great videos and art coming!

Great list of art books! I already have a few of them (Payne, Elliott) and ordered a few more and wish listed the rest. I’ve found several books in the USA at various Goodwill stores. It’s amazing what you can find there and none cost more than $3. For example, I recently bought a large beautiful book on John Singer Sargent - a book that costs $85 new - I purchased for less than $3 in nearly new condition. Thank you for giving us a glimpse into your art library.

Great video from a wonderful channel. Art books have provided me a much-needed escape from real life. I have my easy chair set up with a desk, a lamp, a blanket and a cup of coffee. I spent many hours with dragons, unicorns, space battles, pixies, knights, and now with my National Geographic books, the vast undersea world of the coral reefs. My art books are the best investments I ever made. My 4 favorite books are: - Fantasy Art Paintings by Mike Hoffman - Works of Wonder by Michael Whelan - Infinite Worlds by Vincent DiFate - Great Fighter Jets of the Galaxy 1 by Tim Gibson

Andrew… I originally watched this video in 2019. I wrote down the books you suggested and attempted to look for a couple that I thought I wanted to read. I looked in my local libraries.. to no avail. I searched online…. And the ones I could find had HUGE price tags. I have been going to estate sales and always search the books.. just in case. I had given up on the idea. Then today I was going through boxed books I have had boxed since 2012 when I moved. We had not had room to put books out. So they have stayed in boxes for over ten years. However… my aunt was a self taught oil painter.. and a few years ago I decided to learn to paint in oil… a medium I had no experience in but my aunt was accomplished. Long story short.. in 2007 I inherited some of my aunts books and they were in a box marked “art books”. Well today I opened that box and found two books that you suggested… I recognized one by the photo right away… “Glazing”!!! Then I grabbed a few other books to bring in and see if any of them might be “helpful”!! Low and behold one of them was by Theodore Kautzky… “Pencil Pictures”. It is not the “combined” version you suggested. But it has a great basis and I plan on cracking it open tomorrow. The one book you suggested that I truly wanted to read and had been looking for it from every book shelf I passed…. Was the Ted Kautzky book you recommended. It just seemed like the perfect “starting place”. I was shocked tonight when I came here to see if this was “the book”. It may not be the exact book… but this too is a great “start”!! In any case… thank you for your videos… and for your inspiration to many of us here!!

Hi Andrew, I recently stumbled across Hans Heyson's studio in Hahndorf in South Australia. It has been left untouched since the day he passed away. Its an amazing building with extraordinary natural light and space. It even has his last two paintings sitting on the easel. If you get the chance you should check it out. Also on display in another area of the property is his daughters studio and collection of works. I highly recommend it.

@Dallas-Nyberg
@Dallas-Nyberg 6 лет назад
Great stuff... Hans Heysen is also my all time favorite Aussie artist. I visited his Gallery a month or so ago... it was quite an experience. I could feel his presence there. I am a, self taught, high detail animal painter also. My paintings are done using liquid acrylics. I thought I was on the right path with my choice of style and subject, until today. I had been looking around for a suitable gallery or outlet to display my work. I didn't have any success, so I sought the advice from a very well known artist and art show presenter.. no names here, but he is very well known. He didn't pull any punches, he basically told me that high detail animal art is not a desirable format in today's galleries. Unless I was prepared to paint "more contemporarily based" artwork...(his words, not mine.) It stunned me that this was now the case. Over the past eight years or so, I have sold a lot of my artworks, done commissioned work and won several art awards. Now my art style is deemed as undesirable? You are a truly awesome wildlife painter, what are your thoughts on this matter? Has the style we enjoy had it's day? I bought this subject up on my Facebook page, where I have a huge "fan base" that follows my art journey. Their reaction was tinged with rage at the blunt reply i received from the artist. What is going on here? I paint for our people to enjoy and these people, both on Facebook and those who visit my web site, seem to love what I do. Are they too misinformed, art wise, to comprehend what good or bad art should look like? It has got me beat. Here is a link to my latest painting... please tell me where I am getting it wrong... Cheers www.artworkbydallas.com/uploads/2/6/7/8/26789162/published/common-kingfisher.jpg?1530599400
@Aussiemarco
@Aussiemarco 5 лет назад
If I could offer some advice; it could be that your background in the painting you posted here is too detailed and busy (but brilliantly executed). It detracts from the main subject, the bird. One of the best Australian wildlife painters today is Paul Margocsy. His work is stunning, both highly detailed birds but with very loose, abstract backgrounds. Plus his work is popular with galleries. www.paulmargocsy.com.au/gallery
@rosered103
@rosered103 5 лет назад
@Dallas Nyberg ........ @Aussiemarco didn't like your background....and yet I did enjoy your background very much, being a detailed artist is probably why, and the tree limb and yet I did not enjoy your bird.
@johncharleson8733
@johncharleson8733 5 лет назад
Your stuff is almost psychedelic--but not quite. I think if you create more contrast between foreground and background, perhaps use more shading in the subject or background, with an off-centered focal point for the subject matter (the focal point in your example is not your subject but is really the area of distant landscape to the right center) , and with a bit more flat (or greyed) colour in larger patches then your stuff would be dynamite. It's funny because your art is almost like that of a 'contemporary' artist forcing himself into some kind of realistic formula--I think you are trying too hard; loosen up. By the way, this is the first, and probably last personal and public art critique I have or will ever give. It's frustrating to me seeing your potential misused. Finally, I am not a 'contemporary art' lover per se--but good is good and I think you need a nudge in the right direction.
