Hi there. I started watching your videos. We have all kinds of heat/cold problems. Really appreciate your taking the time to make these and explain things the way you do. Really, really helpful information, thank you!

Unfortunately insulating the exterior of homes, roofs included, is too expensive for most builders. I used to do spray foam, we would do the underside of the roof decking, however I dont agree with the standard install practice. Just info to anyone who is a DIYer, the attic foil he was standing in front of, will decrease attic temps about 20 degrees.

I’m very concerned about potential outgassing from spray foam. Apart from sealing joints/filling gaps, I won’t use it on my home.

@@marshallgoldberg8376 As long as the installer knows what they are doing its fine. Alot of different chemicals have become widely used that reduce the off gassing. Unless it is new construction where the entire home is sprayed, its minimal.

Great product and I doubt it’s off gassing much, if at all, into the house unless you have a loft like I do.

@@SJ-gd6bo What do you not like about the ‘standard install practice’ of spray foam under roof decking? I’m a DIYer using rigid foam.

This is where a good light colored coated metal roof and proper insulation really shines. I have asphalt shingles and today it’s 92 degrees outside presently so my third floor loft /between both front and rear attic areas) is about 78 WITH a portable a/c cranking. It’d be close to 90 air temp up here w/o it at 3pm. Roofing matters.

I got me a quiet cool blue tooth control attic fan and the thermal wrap up to the ridge cap but open a little and open to the soffit 80 outside 67 inside no ac on in days baby

Question?? Wouldn’t an attic fan that is close to ridge vent/ gabble vent/ box vent primarily suck air from those closer sources opposed to ideally pulling from soffits. The fan doesn’t care where it gets air from, so it logically would come from the closest/ easiest place.
@CrawlSpaceNinja

Great question. According to building science and engineers I have read studies by the air wants to move from low to high, the stack or chimney effect. So if that is true having the active ventilation closest to the top of the attic would work better than a lower fan. Thanks for commenting.

Well I have a solar attic fan and a ridge vent.. But what I really like to do is add small windows in each of my gables I have 4 my roof goes every which way..this way I’d have cross ventilation.. I have solar panels which probably also cuts down on the heat of the sun..and also add plywood flooring theres plenty of open space up there to use..

That's great. Have you seen a return on investment with solar?

Crawl Space Ninja ...I just had it installed..So too soon to tell but here in NJ we have SRecs so it’s around 200 bucks in the pocket per 1000w generated for 15 years they say I’ll get 6 a year..plus the savings on the electric bill.and the 28% rebate on 2020 taxes.. I’m hoping it’s a win win..and the house is all electric so the savings alone on a 300 a month bill should be great..

I was told that if you have good insulation, heat transfer from the attic is minimal. So how much better is a cooker attic? Isnt it better just to get more insulation on the attic floor?
@CrawlSpaceNinja
@CrawlSpaceNinja Год назад
I have heard people say they added more insulation and saw no difference. Of course, that may not be the case for every home but I'd hate to find out after blowing in more insulation. I think a combination of air seal and more insulation is best approach when it can be done.

I put solar panels on my roof. Cooled my attic down significantly.

I bet, has the solar helped on utility bills?
@ttfweb1

Crawl Space Ninja Yes, very much so. They generate all the power we need annually. We did a number of energy upgrades to achieve it. The one thing I did notice was that in the summer our AC wasn’t running much, then I realized the south exposure of the roof was now shaded with panels. Also, the long-wave radiation of sunlight is absorbed by them - so the attic is way cooler. Even with 20” of insulation up there, it has an impact.

question for you guys I have electrical boxes and light fan fixtures can I just the R38 fiberglass insulation over them ? or ?
@CrawlSpaceNinja

The goal would be to stay as safe as possible, if there are no exposed wires heat sources we would say you would be ok.B But if you have any doubt just lean on the safe side and dont put in on.
