My Audi R8 felt under powered so i took it to ‪@MalloryPerformance‬ to run it on the Maha dyno with help from ‪@Phil-cooper‬ & i was right... it was severely underpowered. Could it be carbon build up which is causing the loss along with poor injectors. Ill soon find out.

The Audi power figure of 420bhp is a flywheel figure not a wheel horsepower figure. So 350bhp to the wheels as measured on the dyno is about right. You can be looking at 15% drivetrain loss which is about 65bhp. I’ve been on the R8 forum and quite a few other people have had their cars dyno’d at around 350bhp.

Its a rule of thumb get to 100k miles injectors will either need a referb or defo replaced, yes it will cost BUT in the long run you'll get a good chunk of your money back on the fuel you save with better mpg .

Get an oil catch can fitted to stop the vapours mixing with the egr gas and causing all that mess to build up again!

That’s the solution @Mat and clean all the EGR system that must be full of carbon deposit as well or it will end up in your intake valves soon and ruin all your efforts of this video

I think the egr is controlled by cam/valve overlap...only way to get rid is a new set of cams 😍

Does a catch can prevent this or just prolong it? Instead of having to do it every 40k miles you might need to do it every 60k right?

Remember, Audi quotes engine output whereas this type of dyno measures wheel output. The general rule is at the wheel you’ll see about 10%-15% less power to what the manufacturers quote so if Audi quotes 420bhp you’re looking at between 355 and 380 at the wheel (give or take a few horses). And lets not forget the R8 is a Quattro.

Tha ks for the enthusiasm Mat. I've recently decided that I'm shite under the bonnet as I've always had mechanic friends to call upon, and decided to learn my way around a bit. That's in no small part tha ks to you! Admittedly, while you're sandblasting the internals of a v8 sports car, I'm replacing a maf sensor and servicing a Fiesta Zetec S on my drive. But hey, we all start somewhere, right? 😬

Hey Matt for hard to see places for filming and for fault finding use an endoscope. You can get great cheap ones now that connect straight to you're phone i use one at work all the time and you could add the footage into the vids!

Couple questions. 1. Was that Ricky Elder holding the transmission filter? 2. When you carbon cleaned it, did you also clean the flaps fixed to the bottom of the intake plenum as well?

Mat your Audi S5 inspired me to buy my own. 4 months ago I bought a 2011 S5 4.2 V8 Manual. It spent 2 months in the shop and burned $9k from me in just repairs and now has a blown engine. I traded it for a Camry lmao. Was fun while it lasted. Love the channel!

Matt before you put it back together pour aload of redex down each cylinder and let it soak over night it will get rid of the rest left in there it will kick out white smock to start but will clear. Well worth that bit extra 👍

fill the 8 intake ports with petrol , leave it and cheack it to see if any of the petrol has leaked through the valves, doubt it will but might give you an indication of compression losses. and as someone commented a catchcan probably prevent more .

The old Mondeo V6 engines suffered from this, all down to PCV(Positive Crankcase Ventilation) system & EGR.

Next video please Mat!!! The boys at Mallory are 'the bollox'. They took my wifes 2016 SQ5 from 320hp to 380hp and over 515nm torque. She's a beast (and currently more powerful than your RS8 :-) )

I could be wrong but are you comparing BHP as advertised from Audi vs WHP or wheel horse power. BHP does not account for drivetrain loss only the friction in the engine itself by letting the rpm roll to zero, no? I assume Audi measures BHP at the crank with the motor out of the car, once you strap an AWD transmission to it and measure it through all that friction on a dyno it will always be less than just the crank. 420HP - 15% would yield 357HP, which is almost spot on, so not too shabby. I enjoy your videos and I have an R8 myself so I’m excited to see what gains you add. Keep up the awesome content!!!

Unbelievable hard work. Pure satisfaction once the job done. I used to work on a naval air squadron with the Rotal Marines and Royal Navy. We used the walnut shells technique on the Seakings. My civvy mates thought I was kidding when I told them we used shells..... Great job. As always love Kevin with his ball... Blissfully unaware of all the hard work going on.... I doubt that’s from rings, that will likely be from the valve stem seals at this mileage. A contributing factor to the carbon build up, as well as the PCV oil vapours.

Hey Mat, you might be surprised how much bhp you get back. When I had my old Audi B7 RS4 V8 carbon cleaned, it released 65bhp and was almost back to full power! 👍🏼

My b7 rs4 dropped to around the 370hp mark as it was bunged up like this. A carbon clean, deflap and stage 2 map at mrc pushed it up to 430hp after. I assume this is the same engine in the r8 unless it's the one they stuck in b8 rs4?

Nice graft as always!! Excited to see the result on this one! Car has really grown on me with those wheels on now. Hopefully you can get it somewhere near it's original power figure. That would be awesome but either way with a decent service and this you should be reclaiming a fair few of those lost ponies!!

Am I right in thinking that Mallorca Park doesn't have any large fans to feed the engine with fresh cold air whilst on the dyno? No Ram air effect? If so thats got to be good for 20bhp loss right there. I couldn't see fans from that camera angle. Great vlog as always. Kevin is hilarious.

the Dyno room works as a vacuum there is a huge fan behind the car which sucks are through the holes in the dyno doors at the front

A small hole will let the air move faster to the flaps on part throttle will give you faster response and better fuel mix.

Dont feel too down about the power loss. As a mechanic I've never seen many of those v8s make more than 370bhp from new anyway. The power figures were fudged a bit
