casperandhobbes It can be complicated if you try to think about it as all one big timeline. My advice is to pick up the latest issue of Batman and start from there. Then you can read anything older as being past adventures. It would be hard to make literal sense of the timeline if you tried to start at year one and go forward.

One problem with this timeline which is the same one I had... Long Halloween, the majority of it, has to take place during Year Three. Why? Well, the comic begins in June and it isn't until the end of the first issue that it's Halloween. In the beginning, Gordon is already Captain and the Roman already has his Catwoman-produced scratch marks. which means it has to at least begin toward the end of Year One. Carmine doesn't get the scratches til about November but even if we retconned that date to take place a little earlier, it just doesn't work as we soon learn that his nephew's wedding is in June and, as I said, the comic ends on Halloween after a montage of events throughout several months between June and October. Had the comic began in October without the montage, we could have handwaved the date of when Selina scratches the Roman... but that's not the case. That monthly montage doesn't work as part of Year One as far as I can tell since Catwoman is already active. The only way I see it working IS: * You ignore the date from Year One where she scratches the Roman and place it in October, a few weeks earlier from the November 2nd date given. * Next, you have to IGNORE Selina's mention in TLH that the wedding in Issue 1 is taking place in June and that it's only shortly after she scratches Carmine Falcone; also in October * After that, the following montage of several months' worth of time needs to be condensed down into about a week to two weeks worth of time so that the first Holiday killing still takes place on Halloween or right around Halloween, thus making the story begin Halloween of Year One * Chapter 2 of TLH, Thanksgiving, would then be Thanksgiving of Year One * Chapter 3, Christmas, of TLH, which prominently features Joker means it happens JUST after Man Who Laughs which definitely happens in Year One and is Joker's first appearance. We know it's Christmas time because Year One ends with Joker attacking Gotham. I guess it's possible that Long Halloween is only Joker's second appearance and that he busts out of Gotham nearly right away, making him attack Gotham twice during Year One's Christmas. The only other issue that presents itself is that if the beginning of TLH starts in October, you still have the issue that the batsignal is being used which doesn't show up until Man Who Laughs.... The only consolation I can give is that if Two-Face emerges in Year Three... then that means Batman worked with Harvey Dent for TWO years before Two-Face emerges. I know, it's not as clean and cute as the other way. That also means that Robin doesn't start until the TAIL end of Year Three which is kind of wonky and basically means his first REAL year is Year Four. But I think that's the only way it technically works out given the dates. The only OTHER option is to ignore ALL the dates given in Year One which is rather awkward. Push the entire book into just January to June of Year One, then Long Halloween's beginning, set in June, and the montage that follows it takes place throughout the entire rest of the year up to October. Then you get the last page/epilogue of Year One with the mention of the Joker, then Man Who Laughs and Chapter 3 of TLH in December of Year One? That's a LOT to ignore and a wonky way to treat Batman: Year One though just to get TLH to fit into Year Two.

How did I miss this video until now? A while back, on a bored whim, I tried making notes for how I'd make a Batman TV show, though I stopped at about 9 seasons. I had Knightfall show up a bit earlier but Two-Face, Long Halloween, Superman, JLA, those were spot on. Worth mentioning I included Tower Of Babel right before Killing Joke, Funeral For A Friend and Death In The Family. I kinda felt bad for it too, especially because I wanted a good chunk of Broken Bat before Knightfall.

Others are doing it, I am going to do it too. My Batman timeline: Year 1: Bruce is 25 years old and his training is over. He starts his career with small time criminals. Year 2: The Joker appears for the first time. War of Jokes and Riddles. Year 3: The GCPD start trusting the Batman. Year 4: Batman learns of other heroes. He, also, arrests Catwoman for the first time. Year 5: Batman and Talia Al Ghoul meet. Damien is conceived. Dick Grayson becomes Robin at 13 years of age. Year 6: The Justice League is formed. Darkseid is defeated for the first time. Year 7: Barbara Gordon becomes Batgirl. She is 16 years old. Year 8: Dick Grayson joins the Teen Titans. Tim Drake becomes Robin at 12. Year 9: Bane breaks Bruce's back. Azrael becomes Batman for a while. Near the end of the same year, Bruce becomes Batman again. Year 10: Damien is brought to the Wayne Manor. He was artificially grown up and is trained by Batman. Year 11: Crisis on Infinite Earths. In the same year, Jason Todd becomes Robin. He is 13 years old. Year 12: Killing Joke and Death in the Family happen within 4 months. Dick Grayson becomes Nightwing and leaves for Blüdhaven. Year 13: Damien becomes Robin and Tim Drake is taken in to be trained. JLI is formed. Year 14: Flashpoint. The timeline is reset to 5 years before current events. Nobody remembers. Back to year 9: Batman is defeated by Bane. The story remains the same. Year 10: Damien is brought to the Wayne Manor and becomes Robin. Jason Todd is brought in and begins training. Year 11: Killing Joke and Death in the Family happen. Tim Drake becomes Robin. Year 12: A new Multiversal Crisis happens. Jason Todd wakes up and is taken in by The League of Shadows. Year 13: Under the Hood story. A few months later, Jason joins Batman's allies. Year 14: Final Crisis, Blackest Night and Battle for the Cowl. Months later, Batman returns. Year 15: Court of Owls and Death of the Family happen. Year 16: The Teen Titans become the Titans. Batman: Endgame. Year 17: Batman and Catwoman marry each other. Months later, Helena Wayne is born. Tim Drake becomes Red Robin. Year 18: Dark Knights: Metal. Batman realizes he is getting older. Dick Grayson and Barbara Gordon marry each other. Year 19: Alfred Pennyworth dies of old age. Mister Freeze stops his criminal activities and changes his life. Year 20: Bruce Grayson is born. Bruce Wayne meets Thomas Wayne's Batman. They defeat Reverse Flash with the help of Barry Allen. Year 21: Bruce stops being Batman. Dick Grayson becomes Batman at 29. Bruce starts having more time with Selena and Helena. Year 1 of Dick's time as Batman (22): Damien becomes the second Nightwing. Years 2-10 (23-31): Older heroes retire and their sidekicks take their place. A Justice League is formed. Many of Bruce's enemies have tragic endings. Year 3 (24): Helena Wayne begins training under Bruce and Dick, to become Robin. The next years are like Bruce's time as Batman, but for Dick. Amanda Waller begins her project for future the Batman. Year 21 for Dick's Batman: Dick retires and Batman Beyond begins.

Because of the current continuity, I like to think Tim originally wanted be the next Robin but instead decided not to out respect for Bruces' loss and Jasons' death. I like to think Year One and Zero Year have been merged in Rebirth; Zero Year happens first, then Batman faces the antagonists of Year One, and goes through a few personal changes kind of like he does in the original story. Other than that, our timelines sound pretty similar. I'd probably also say Dick and Barbara are nearer the same age. In the present continuity in my headcanon, Bruce is in his late 30s/Early 40s.

This is a really solid timeline. Obviously the future of Batman is very uncertain with all the alternate timelines, wether it be TDKR or Titans Tomorrow, but I’d say the most loved and respected by fans is Batman Beyond. After Bruce is 45 in your timeline, I’d say his story follows that of the DCAU’s Batman beyond pretty closely.

Yeah and it makes sense since there's a Rebirth version of Batman Beyond that works with the mainstream timeline in mind (it has a more grown up Damian Wayne working with Bruce in his last days in the mantle) and given Bruce is late 50's in the start of Beyond (possibly 60's) there's still 15 years to go beyond timeline-wise.

Jason / Ashley. Great Video - Big Fan. I have a Question: Is there anything either of you would add or remove from DC's [25] Essential Graphic Novels 2017 for those just getting started in DC comics?

Cool exercise. I think DC might not wasn't to acknowledge Bruce as a 45 year old man, but then again they did seem to have allowed characters to age up in recent years. I like the idea of Bruce taking Dick Grayson in as almost a cousin/brother. He didn't ever seem to have a father-son relationship with him, so this makes more sense. The time discontinuities of various crises let's DC wiggle around some age differences, but overall this actually holds up pretty well.

Welp I like this way more than when the NEW52 said all the Robins and Batman's continuity happened in 5years. Then Rebirth says the Dr.Manhattan took like 5years from the superheros or something.

Do you think you can list out the timeline in this video. I’m very new to reading batman comics and I had no idea wtf they were talking about most of the time. They stopped listing the names for the specific comic they were talking about assuming people would know what they are talking about but I had no idea. Once they got to year 4 and 5 I was so confused.

What really annoyed me was Futures End. Whatever the year, you have to add Fifty to get to Batman Beyond. That was the rule Bruce Timm and Alan Burnett made to explain the jump in technology. Then they wrote Futures End. They changed it to 35 years to keep everyone younger and still relevant. Even though they're still in their 50's and 60's. Then when they reintroduce Damien as The new Head of the Demon. He looks like he's 30. No! That doesn't work!
