It seems like the demo stage of this fixer upper is never ending!! My mom is here at the house today and we are tearing down walls like a pro! Today we are tearing down the wall around the old basement stairway, and future coat closet!
Hey there! My name is Abby and I recently bought a MAJOR fixer upper house. I am SO excited to work on fixing it up this old house and turning it into my dream home. I can't wait to take you on this journey with me! I am planning to DIY as much as I can and learn so much about home renovations along the way. I am starting out totally clueless so I am sure it will be a grand adventure! Follow along on my channel if you want to see DIY projects, renovating a house on a budget, and I am sure a lot of craziness along the way! I'm just a girl with a drill and a dream.

I say forget that coat closet, remove the wall and install open railing on either side of the staircase. It will open up the whole downstairs and when you come in the front door you will have a beautiful entrance into the house.

I'll save Abby some trouble here. The house is post and beam construction. There are posts on the outside walls with beams morticed in that support the 2nd floor. She knows what she is doing.

I love the openness…a welcome bench with coat hooks would be lovely instead of a coat closet. If possible, you may want to consider an open staircase too! Open concept makes everything look so much crisper and cleaner. I love your positive attitude! I also love how your parents are so very helpful to you! You have a great family.❤️

If you don't like the idea of open storage for coats etc, go antiquing for a wardrobe cabinet (armoire). The bigger they are, the cheaper they are. Many bargains to be had!

That open entry area you just created is so nice. It’s like you can breath in that open space. Makes coming in the front door refreshing. Your mom is a hardworking sweetheart. (So is your dad). Glad you get help from them and friends. Your friend helping you outside wrapping the exposed wood walls two weeks ago is a good friend and a smart girl.

Your mom is incredible!! She's such a help to you, Jim, and who knows who else. She grooms and feeds the horses, cows, etc., raises a garden, bakes bread, pies, etc., cans and freezes fresh produce from the garden, keeps the house, probably fixes all the meals, does the laundry, films many of the videos, etc., etc., etc. You guys are one lucky family to have her around!! Of course, you all know that already!! Blessings to you all.

Abby, Forget the closet, you can always get a hall tree to put your coats in get rid of the pantry you have your stairs going down to the basement under the stairs going up. now you have a open plan concept for the house with just the stairs in the middle. Forget the closet. Forget the fire stove going through the middle of your house and have it on an outside wall so there is less of a chance of burning down you beautiful house and have it vented outside directly. that way you can heat the whole of the downstairs by one source. with no boundaries to go through like walls and doors you can have more of an even heat on the main level or get a zero clearance heating system or geo thermal heating where the heat in the ground can heat your home. You need to get another front door cos there is a 4-5 inch gap under there its a good job you don't have any plumbing at this stage cos it would freeze. But its looking good. just taking out the closet altogether you have added a good 4 ft to your living space. I tell you what i saw a lady on you tube do is instead of a door going down to your basement like any other door she had a cabinet made with room in an upper cabinet for storage and the lower cabinet was the door to the basement but it was made of the same cabinetry as the rest of the kitchen it was so cool and functional. Check out Daily diyer kitchen remodel, Her house is around the same age as yours but hers was in much better condition when they bought their house but the cabinetry turned out so sweet. You should check it out. It may give you some other good pointers to help you develop the home of your dreams. Good luck Abby Well done to Brenda coming to the rescue.

I think if you could get all that clutter outside in your burn pile or wherever. You would feel like you have accomplished so much more. It's hard to see the progress with a lot of debris to work around, over or under. My hubby and I haven't missed one video. Something we actually enjoyed watching together 😂
@s.j.jeanne8408

I totally agree I see that the clutter your walking over around is a hazard. Falkland tripping treading on nails etc is potentially an accident waiting to happen. Glum suggested to remove the wall bits outside. A burn pile is an answer.

Back then. Looks like 2x4, 6 and maybe some 8. Nice bon fire for the new year, that stuff will burn beautifully. I wonder if the ceiling is sagging a touch, maybe push up a 1/4" with the new wall. Just a thought, I wonder if you actually need a door to the chimney, since once it's in you're not likely to ever need access. Why not give all that space to the closet, and just build a normal chase for the chimney pipe? Drywall the chase, and if you ever do need to go in there, you can easily open the drywall, do whatever you need to do, and then patch and paint it. That would give you more room in your closet and eliminate the need to fit a door in..
