One of my favourites from this year too! Although the books from Olivia Atwater have pretty cool (as in, certainly more dangerous and whimsical than perpetually horny) Fae too imho! Talking about "Half a Soul" and "Ten Thousand Stitches" at least - haven't read the others. No weird big D energy there, more of a Victorian (?) England setting.

I love when authors actually write faeries in a way that’s similar to their mythology. They’re assholes and are considered “higher beings” that don’t bother with human pleasantries. It makes the character dynamics much more interesting imo

Yes!!! Underrated (but look it's YA) is "Iron King" by Julie Kagawa. I read it way back in high school when Sarah J Maas didn't ruin faeries for me. Like, it has THE best character you will ever meet - Puck and a talking cat ;)

The thing about How You Lose the Time War is that I fell so in love with that book that I didn’t even realize I was basically reading poetry. When you read that line in this video, it finally was obvious to me. Not a poetry girlie but for those two characters and the unique story, I guess I’m down! An all time fave

For me (a non-native English speaker), the poetry thing actually made the experience worse for me. Like yes, it can be be beautiful, but I just couldn’t feel and understand how they felt and thought. If I wanted to, I probably would have needed a dictionary next to me lol (But honestly great that you liked it so much! That’s what books are for :))

Honestly reylos are the best at enemies to lovers and friends to lovers!! I loved reading reylo fanfic because they felt like real romantic literature...qnd often fanfics would deviate so much from the canon it was its own thing. Proud of the reylos!

The last book reminded me of a book I've read recently call "Mrs Percy's pocket guide to the care and feeding of British dragons." Its a bit different in a lot of ways, especially the dynamic of the main couple which seems to be a bit softer from my understanding, but I really enjoyed the main characters growth through the story of gaining confidence, finding herself outside of her obligations and learning what she wants to do with her life. The love intrest is also very sweet, he's the town vicar and is a bit of a mess. But yeah, definitely off to read that last book now, those characters sound like a lot of fun

I cannot wait to read Study in Drowning and Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries! I borrowed the former on Libby and couldn't finish before my loan was up due to personal events, but I loved it so much that I bought the Owlcrate edition secondhand 😅 My interest was immediate, so if you thought it started slow, I cannot imagine how insane the last part will be for me! I also got the B&N edition of Emily Wilde. These are both definitely going to be read early in the new year 😄

this is how you lose the time war my love ❤️ i picked it up after you first recommended it and it’s one of my favorite books of all time, if not the favorite. it’s so lyrical and lush, and the characters’ relationship is so infinitely loving. i understand how people could feel alienated by the specific-yet-unclear ways that different times are portrayed, but it’s something i actually adored about it; it really heightened the sense that this war and red & blue’s parts in it-and as a result, their love-are so vast, so all-encompassing, and so dependent on every detail of every strand. i’m so glad you recommended it and i’m really looking forward to picking up some of this year’s recs!!

Emily Wilde was such a good book!! I loved the whole plot line and the layout of the book. The tone of the main character’s entries was so interesting to me too. And…I don’t even know what Emily and Wendell’s dynamic is called, but I could not get enough of them. I I needed more scenes with them together, honestly. I even searched ao3 for fan fiction of them 😅

I finished This Is How You Lose the Time War in the beginning of 2023, and I’m currently rereading it already ❤ one of my absolute faves of all time, and the audiobook narration is amazing as well. The writing style is so unique. Usually I’d be annoyed at the vague world building, cause I do want to know more about the science / magic of jumping through time and what each side is fighting for in this war, but this particular book is just so poetic and romantic and executed beautifully that I don’t mind. It’s amazing, 100/10, can’t recommend enough.

I loved Emily Wilde’s! As someone in academia I personally loved the nerdy academic approach and I thought it felt so real and that you could go out and find these faeries if you wanted to try hard enough. And her dynamic with the other professor was great.

Not sure if it would help, but when I was feeling a lot of self loathing, I made a rule that if it wasn't something I would say to a loved one, it wasn't something I was allowed to say about myself. Helps put things in perspective when you realize exactly how cruel you can be in regards to your self perception. If you wouldn't make that statement about them, why would you think those words are acceptable to the person that should be your best friend. The one person you're never away from: you.

I read Emily Wilde after you talked about it in a previous video and really enjoyed it too! I enjoyed the footnotes because it did add some extra information that would later become relevant, such as the mention of the two academics from centuries ago who have become a legend in their own right. After seeing them mentioned a few times, the characters refer to them as a figure of speech that doesn't need to be info dumped explained because it's already there. Really great idea! Makes you feel like you know their world a lot more.

This is honestly my fave sponsor lead-in of all time. Perfection. Oh, "This is How You Lose the Time War" - so good. And one of the only books that actually uses the time-loop concept in a way that works and is pretty stunning. Bumping You, Again up on the tbr (have the galley, haven't gotten to it yet)

Happy Holidays, Cindy!!!! Im so glad you had a great time reading these book. Now, Ill be checking them out myself. The only reylo publish book I read was “ Love Hypothesis “ . You, again sounds cute and hope to get around reading it by next year. The Fair book seems something I’ll really enjoy. Maybe the fae mood will have a comeback on my reading list next year. 😂😂😂😂

I loved You Again, also the witty fast paced dialogue gave me Gilmore Girls which made me eat it up more and I absolutely did not care it was ReyLo fanfiction people need to get over that. You also got me to read Wordslut and where as that's a linguistics book it was good especially reading it next to Emily Wilsons translation of the The Odyssey because it's so interesting how just certain aspects of language and the context of the world at the time really set the tone for what we read and how we consume the world around us.

I agree that A Study In Drowning started off so slow, I nearly DNF'd it. But it picked up and I'm glad I picked it up again! I thought it was so atmospheric and beautiful.
