Dear Sewing Friends, in this video I answer your questions and share my best serger tips and tricks. I hope this advise is going to help you just as much as it helps me!
ALL about my coverstitch machine - • Cover Stitch - do you ...
HOW TO become a MEMBER of this channel to get access to Extra Videos, library of Instruction Sheets and other perks- PLEASE READ FIRST TILL THE END. Thank you!
Membership trailer here (what are the full perks, where to find them, Apple users - please watch till the end) - • Membership trailer 2022
• PLEASE NOTE: these are not patterns for clothes and garments included in the Membership
• Instruction sheets are a step-by-step written instruction on how I drafted this or that project, so that you can follow along. Instruction Sheets are available as a back catalogue, but there are no new Instruction sheets for projects starting with July 2022.
• The templates are ONLY for the small projects, like a basket, or coaster, or towel wrap and etc.
• I have also created sewing reference sheets and practice sheets, as well as sketches that you can use and some small-scale garment parts that you can use to practice "slash and spread" techniques and dart manipulations. Instruction sheets are focused on the drafting process and less on the sewing sequence as that is shown in the video. Sewing steps can be sometimes written out, and sometimes referenced back to the original video.
• Members Extra videos go into fabric selection, extra tips and tricks, best practices and some additional ideas from me
• I try to prioritize Members comments, especially if there is a question
• I try to post EARLY ACCESS videos for Members, meaning those are videos that you can watch earlier than anyone else and without ads :)
• Every week I post Members ONLY sneak peeks

Brilliant video, I am soooooo glad you posted! I am very new to using a serger and just starting out! Managed to create a spool of serger thread for my sewing machine yesterday with a long pin wider that the thread bobbin, it was spinning at 100 miles per hour and worked!

I have been known to wind thread onto bobbins and use those on the overlocker/serger to have all the threads match when I only have one spool of the right colour. I'm going to try out the coffee cup for holding a large cone... beats buying a large spool holder!
@dale3404
@dale3404 3 года назад
I like my threads to match and do this also. As long as the needle threads match, the looper threads can be a little different. Serger thread is finer than sewing thread, but I haven’t had a problem with breakage when using it in the sewing machine, or with sewing thread being too bulky in a serged seam.
@sylviah1234
@sylviah1234 3 года назад
using the first thread for my sewing machine rather than rethread the serger. I cut the thread leaving the threaded part..use the thread on my sewing machine and then just place it back on the serger and tie the knot and pull the thread through. this works for me for any thread I remove. Thank you for all your tips,
@marsha4796
@marsha4796 3 года назад
One issue about using serger thread for a construction seam on the sewing machine is that many most serger threads are 2 ply as most garment threads are 3 ply. I'd be pretty careful about using serger threads on a machine.

Great reminder for me! The curves always get me. I do lock my knife but the reminder to hand crank and reposition under the foot is a good one. When I got a serger many years ago I was told I could get away with threads of black, white, beige or tan. That's what I use unless I'm doing a decorative rolled hem on the edges of napkins, for example. Then I use a matching color for the threads that show. I ALWAYS test before I start a new project. Clean regularly. Thanks for the tips!

Hand cranking direction on a machine can vary. You are correct to say that you should only hand crank in one direction. However, I recently purchased an older Baby Lock serger which requires to only handcrank in the opposite direction (away from me) than what I am used to with my Brother (towards myself). I also use serger thread in my sewing machine but only when I'm out of a certain sewing machine thread color. Thanks for your additional tips.

Yes, yep, Ne!!! that is usually problem 101 with almost anything (including & especially with IKEA furniture) PEOPLE REFUSE TO READ THE INSTRUCTIONS!!!!! Now, if you've read the instructions and don't get it....then that's perfectly fine, absolutely no problem. I'm sure that you excel at a million other things instead! 😊 Get someone to read the instructions and show you, so you can excel at sewing! But..... most people don't read the instructions..... for anything! Even as a kid I was setting video timers for adults, cause they simply refused to read the instructions. Granted some where bloody hard 25-30 years ago to understand....

When using my sewing machine, I like my threads to match if not blend in with my fabric, but I recently read an article that suggested we can get away with using neutral colored thread, a light shade & a darker shade. For years I've sort of used that idea in my serger loopers but still matched needle threads to garment. What do you think of just using neutral threads?
@plf67
@plf67 2 года назад
I have a shelf that goes across my sewing area and I put the large spools in the back right corner behind my sewing machine and run the thread through cheap hooks underneath the shelf and direct it to which machine I want to use…it’s quick and easy to rethread. You mentioned cover stitch…I rarely us mine. Now the serger…I was afraid of it at first because rethreading it but once I got the hang of it I use it as much as my sewing machine…lol

Hi there! Every serger is different, so just use your manual and scrap fabric to adjust - that is the best thing that you can do. :)
@kymclinton3140
@kymclinton3140 2 года назад
I have the Bernina 80dl ,had it a few years now but never really bothered with the tensions till I had proper time during lockdown when I couldn't work a sat read the manual and got a pile of different scraps and tried them all out and writing down all tension ,sticth lengths knife adjustment ect and to match each fabric which I stuck in a file so now I only need to refer to this so much quicker . the big file. and plastic sleeves on offer 20 sleeves plus twenty free at the time plus printer 500 sheets paper all came from Poundland ( UK ) I'm lucky enough to have a dedicated sewing room and as I live by myself if I don't have time /the inclination to tidy up I can just shut the door I have two cot sides hung on my wall which with hangers, butcher hooks, or cup hooks , on which I hang many things plus adjustable banquet table that I use for cutting fabric which is covered with mattress ticking the mattress tick goes down to the floor si I can hide my hover and boxes of stash out of sight and nice and tidy too and a sheet of teflon so I don't need to get my ironing board out that often

Regarding the cost of thread: use Joann 40-50% off coupons. When you consider the cost of a small spool of thread, and a huge serger thread spool, they are not expensive. The only serger thread I’ve ever run out of is white. They last forever. Also, when you change colors, put the two fullest spools to the right side.
