Adding the Brother 1034D Serger to the sewing machine arsenal has been one of my most useful purchases. Sharing some of my favorite tips to avoid frustrating and the urge to chuck it out a window, plus some lessons I've learned through my experience over the past two years owning a serger.

I just watched you video giving tip on using the Serger. I know you said you start from scratch when threading your Serger, one tip when knotting the old and new thread is to move the tension dials to zero, this will not damage your machine.

I am using this serger for the first time. I am a novice sewer, I’d say between beginner and intermediate. You just saved my life and i am SO FREAKING PROUD OF MYSELF that i actually threaded this from scratch vs. the knot method. You took the fear out of it for me. Thank you!!!

I bought this serger yesterday and didn't even take it out of the box. I wanted one, but then I saw it and couldn't even. So complicated-looking! I've been watching videos all day about sergers (and this one in particular). Your video has by far been the most informative and encouraging. I bought the craftsy class and I just opened my box today. That class was super helpful and so were your videos. One cool thing she does in that class is that she has you make samples and write down the settings/fabric type/thread used/which needles you used etc. I did two samples and I've threaded my machine 3 times now. I feel much more confident and it's only been ONE DAY! I am super excited to use this machine to make some clothes!

Hello Jennifer, I have just come across #sewing report squad. I'm glad I am not the only one who insists on re-threading the machine by using the channels indicated, rather than tying knots to attach both ends. I had heard so much about how difficult it was to thread a serger. All of them sounded like they were major trouble, but I wanted one. Our son actually bought it for me... So I took the plunge and must have re-threaded it 2 dozen times, (immediately after getting it delivered) till I felt so comfortable with it - just like I am with my sewing machine. Thank you for that. Also, I did not know that the 3rd cone used up much more thread than the others. You see, I'm still learning. Now I will change over the cones when I start afresh. Thank you for showing us how simple and easy this machine is to work with. Also Thank You Brother 1034d!

I've had one of these for about 12 years. Use it all the time during my sewing season. I do all my own maintenance on my machines and if properly kept it up I expect to be using this for another 12 years. It's still the best value and perfect addition to further your craft.

I just tie off the next thread colour and let them run through the machine, it's worked OK for me for years with no threading of the machine. they have to be tied with a reef knot, not a granny, poor old granny slips...

Ive always had trouble with the number 4 , the little lever. Getting it to stay threaded. It's a big deal when I do actually get it done right . I use a little blue dental floss plastic with a loop at one end to thread my needles and the lever. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. When I do need to use the serger for one particular project, that's when I need someone else to thread this darn thing. Throwing it out the window doesn't work for me, however ater trying multiple times, various days. I actually called a friend and sold it to her. With one try only she did it. Now with three sergers for various projects, they ALL STAY threaded with different threads. Good luck to everyone out there. This was (is) the best I've seen in threading the sergers. Great Job.

Hi Jennifer. I watch your videos frecuently and enjoy all of them. You are a great teacher. You do a great job and shows lots of love and pasion for what you do. Thanks for your great tips. They really help me to understand my serger performance. Sometimes I have a little problem threading my needles because I cant see the eye of the needle very well. I use a spray a bit of hair spray on my fingers and make the thread stifer and in these way I can thread my needles easier. Do not use a lot of spray remember just a bit . Keep the good work. I do found great place to learn lot of stuff .You mentions that you want make clothing this year. page what I found just amazing is ...sure fit designs.....They have all system for paternity and over 200 films about every aspect of sewing from beginer to seamstress ... have also them own paternity and showing you how adjust every paternity to your size ....amazing ...you can purchase them stuff on line now too and receive hard copy to house they have also branch in UK but stuff here is rather ..hmmm "helpful English way".

I have the same Serger/Overlocker as you...Had many frustrating moments with threading it. Only had it a few weeks, and already thought about quitting..I've only used it for sewing seams. I dare not yet attempt to try other things, or it may just end in my back garden, exited from the window hahahhaha. you're great! Have a nice weekend too!

Threading can definitely be a bit of a challenge and the serger is pretty finicky about HOW you thread it. Sometimes I think I've done everything right, and it looks like a mess. Do the same thing 5 minutes later, and it's fine. I'm like, "WHAAA???" I only use mine for sewing seams, because the thought of changing out the setup is not a fun idea to me.

I have the Brother 1634D, which is basically the same as yours. I vacuum mine out using some little attachments that connect to my full size vac. Also a little oiling is needed. Good video.

My mom taught me not to pull them out , but to link them to pull them through to make it easier & save time. FYI she has an industrial brother sewing machine & 45 yrs experience . The reason I watched your video it is because am about yo order it myself . I needed to make sure it comes w the blade & over lock . Oh you can use a small vacuum to clean it up 😉 Thank you for your video

I enjoyed your video very much. I have come up with some hacks that I found useful. About cleaning the inside of the machine: I took an old blus brush, washed it thoroughly to get all the makeup out and let it dry. It dusts out all the fluff that gathers inside the serger beautifully. About having scissors handy. I got some removable kind, stick on hooks. I stuck one on the side of my serger and have a dedicated pair of scissors hanging there at all times.

Just make sure to get it really clean. I sudsed it up twice (wash-rinse-repeat) with one of those special brush cleaning products that the makeup companies sell. Then made sure it was rinsed out well. After it was completely dry it almost seemed to magnetically attract the fluff to itself. I either fan it with my fingers or use a comb to clean it out. After a few months I'll probably give it another bath, but it won't need it as much as it did when I used it for makeup because there are no skin oils or other organic matter to contend with.

Just make sure it's clean and that you get the fluff out regularly. The softer the bristle the better.

For the money, you really can't beat the Brother 1034D serger! Once you get comfortable with it, there'll be no stopping you. I need to play around with disengaging the knife to try out some rolled hems!

My Brother threads from 4 down to 2. I had an issue with puckering with very light knits. I never thought of the differential! It just kept puckering until I added tension to the upper looper and loosened tension to the lower looper. I'll have a look at that differential! Thanks! I do love my surgery though. 😊

Best video I've seen in regards to threading this machine. I just bought mine online today. Ive been apprehensive about threading it. I def prefer to become adept at threading my machine vs tying the thread. Also was worried about learning how to use a serger. Your practical approach and threading demonstration has put me at ease. Glad you enjoyed it! The Brother can be a tad finicky about threading but once you get past that, it'll be a workhorse in your sewing room!

I just bought my first serger and this model felt impossible to thread even with the guides on the machine and the instruction manual, but after watching this I was finally able to thread it and feel like it's not as hard anymore to thread from scratch.

I’ve had this same surger for 15 years and never knew how to adjust it. Thanks for the information! This was a huge help and I found you by accident. 😂

TeaWill I’ve had mine for about eight years and didn’t know this either. This is why they shouldn’t just sale stuff to any and everybody haha... I’m getting ready to play with this thing like I have a new toy...LOL!!!

Crystal Grace I worked in a sewing factory in my early 20s prior to college. We only sewed knit materials, so there was no need to adjust the machine for cotton or woven material. When I bought this machine I loved having it but I never touched the settings because I was afraid I’d mess it up and not have my engineers there to fix it. I’m glad there is RU-vid now for nearly everything under the sun! I even put in my own hardwood flooring because of RU-vid!

TeaWill RU-vid will have us convinced we can perform open heart surgery haha!!! I deep cleaned my serger today and oiled it. What a difference...lol!! All the best and stay safe!!!
