Wow! This was a particularly good one! I have been going through your many posts to see what you have to say about many issues. Even more, I am using them as a mini-retreat ( maybe I should say maxi retreat) during these difficult Covid19 days. But this post really stands out because you speak of true humility, and most of all, the primacy of Jesus in our lives. He is not a philosophy or a theology., but a person to know, love, and serve in order to be happy with Him forever in Heaven. Thanks, Casey!

This was such an incredible video! Thank you so much Brother Casey! This speaks to the journey I’ve been on with God the past couple of years. I’ve always had a difficult time making friends throughout my life, but there was this moment that I realized I need to stop measuring people up to see if they fit my standards of friendship. Instead I started putting those standards on myself and now am working on how I interact with others and how to create true relationships with people. I’ve realized that change is something to be embraced because when God changes me, He’s really just revealing me to myself! I’m discovering how God crested me, and it is such an exciting adventure! God bless you Brother Casey!

I agree that each person should be aware that we have weaknesses we cannot see. I do not think on a societal level we need additional criticism though. We don't even know what we stand for or where we are going at this point. We have gone too far in social reflection.

The Gospel today is about the young man who asked Jesus how to gain the Kingdom of Heavens and Jesus answered him to follow the commandments. The young man said that much he was already doing. Jesus then told him to sell his possessions and follow Him. That reminds me of when I was a kid and watched a movie about the life of Saint Francis of Assisi. We were very poor back then, but I had been given some cheap, simple gifts for children's day. Because of the movie, I gave away my gifts to someone who had not gotten anything (I can still remember that green blouse :-) Incredible how today, that I have considerably more compared to that, I wouldn't be able to give but only what doesn't make any difference to me... Great Gospel and great video, Brother Casey, to help us think about how we see ourselves... Thanks. God bless.

Exactly! Love the test you made. Very well done. I would add however, we can say with certainty that Jesus is not blind and that obedience to Him is the only to live a life of love, virtue and happiness. Also, we should always be weary of a radical skepticism which has been a poison to our modern mindset. Confidence is not a bad thing, and the principle of non-contradiction ought to be always at our finger tips whenever we make statements about self-doubt.

I'm not Catholic but I've been trying to understand other groups of Christians. At first, I thought this video was going to be funny. Then, I got a pleasant surprise. It's serious without being damning because you're pointing out a weakness in yourself as well. Christianity should never be US versus THEM. In theory, we all belong within the body of Christ. When there's tendency that I find myself alone and no one else to be there and no one else to talk to, what I do is to treat myself as my own enemy, down to the minute detail, but in a good way meaning that you should not defend yourself to yourself. If you're wrong, your wrong. It takes tons of effort, tears, fears, prayers and silence to probe oneself but Christ is the light. It's not a one size fits all method but anything that helps is worth taking.

If you knew you had BO you would feel pressured to address it. A friend of mine used to say, knowledge is a burden. The more we know the more we're on the hook to do. He would say, please please, only tell me if you must. I think this is a big reason why people are comfortable not knowing. I think the key question is what is the benefit of knowing?
@BreakingInTheHabit
@BreakingInTheHabit 6 лет назад
LouisFGraham Well the answer to your question is exactly what you say: it calls us to change. Sure, it’s comfortable to not know, but is ignorance really a defense for our actions or a way we want to live our lives? Once we are awoken to an issue-ours or in the world-we are responsible to make a change, which is a good thing.
@m005kennedy
@m005kennedy 6 лет назад
Good points. But I also see this can be carried too far in a way? I don’t even know how to express this correctly but there are people out there who want to lead us into sin in some disguise of acceptance. I guess I’m saying there is a real danger that we could follow a blind person into a pit as Jesus put it. We really need to discern what people say and pray and know the truth about many things the church has been very clear on.
@BreakingInTheHabit
@BreakingInTheHabit 6 лет назад
I'm not saying that we need to accept everything about someone or that everyone has a valid opinion. There ARE definitely right and wrong answers. What I'm saying is that we need to have the humility to realize that sometimes WE'RE the ones with the wrong answer! It's only when we're in diverse and honest community of prayer that we can start to shed light on our own blindness.

Ironically enough, you're proving my point by your comment. Hey brother, any tips to overcome sexual sins?
@BreakingInTheHabit
@BreakingInTheHabit 6 лет назад
Well, that certainly depends on which sins you're talking about...
@aristotelian3098
@aristotelian3098 6 лет назад
+Herrera If I may, this will be general but I think applicable. If you have any questions about it, feel free to follow up: 1. You are biological. Biology is very old and very deep. That which is deep is a drive and not a choice. 2. You will always have drives. 3. You do, however, have a frontal lobe, a prefrontal cortex. It can regulate your drives 4. Christ sends us the Holy Spirit to educate (and much more. This is RU-vid, not a systematic theology) us 5. In the Bible, what are drives are not called 'sins,' just temptations' 6. Temptations ca be resisted 7. We must decide to resist them because they are biological, which means deep and automatic 8.Thus, you must choose between your drive(s) and your actions 9. Only a greater love can overcome a drive ('temptation') 10. It will not be easy. This never is. 11. thus, you must be patient and persistent. this will last your entire life 12. It will be worth it 13 You must be completely honest with yourself as well as with God 14. Take advantage of the Sacrament of Confession 15. Find some way of serving Christ at every moment. We are most vulnerable to temptation when we are alone, in the evening, when we are distracted, when we have not prayed, or when we are idle. 16 Decide to learn (and then work at it) how to make every act an act of repentance. 17. Love others more than you love yourself. Every sexual sin uses others for our own good. Love others so that the best in you works for the best for others. 18. Love God above all, with all your heart and soul and mind and strength. 19. Memorize the _Suscipe_ prayer, meditate on it, and live it. 20. Read Hans Urs von Balthasar. Start with his _Engagement with God._ Twice. Grow from there. Go with God.

I can have an input but I don't know what sexual sins in particular are you talking about. I've given up the hope of entering the monastery to be a monk because I have sexual urges and I thought before the monks don't have it or overcome by staying in the monastery. Also I don't like the set up in the monastery that each of you have your own cell that is your own small bedroom to sleep. Usually at night when we are about to rest to sleep that's the time we have sexual temptation like doing masturbation to release it. But if you are in the monastery you should never indulge to this act. But this temptation can be averted if two people share own cell-bedroom of course with separate bed. I found it if I sleep with others in the room the temptation is less. Like the Hare Krishna group they allowed you to stay in their ashram provided you share some choirs in the ashram like cleaning or cooking or gardening etc and their cell-bedroom two people shares in one bedroom of course separate bed that is so convenient to avoid temptation. I know a lot of stories in the seminary because each of them have separate cell, some of a gay priest went to one of the seminarian and doing blow job that is happening because the seminarian was by himself in the bedroom, imagine if there are two or three sharing in the room that would be avoided because the moment the gay priest enter the room the other will witness it and will create scandal thus the temptation of the gay priest to blow job the seminarian will be unlikely. I know some of the ashram in India and some Buddhist they share bedroom like 2-4 in the room, unless they are all gays and doing some kind of orgies over there that's their fault.The only thing we have problems with someone sleeping with you or group is if one of them is snoring loudly that will ruin your night. But for me I prefer to have only two people share in one cell, maybe if you find him snoring at night you could have arrangement with the Abbot to solve it. I guess I can sleep with other snoring because we all snores unknowingly. The trick to that is to make sure that both of you sleep at the same time so you will be indifferent to snoring and try to get used to hear it or if the other really snore louder ask the Abbot to move you or him to other cell, I mean those snores louder should share room with those who snores louder. Or if that not fix the problem with two people snoring louder together that's maybe solved to sleep alone in one cell.

You probably shouldn't be a monk.

If you lived in a Dominican house, and stank, your brethren would not be slow to tell you. You Franciscans are too nice for your own good. That said, they've snapped you up, and their gain is our loss. You're a good preacher.

"Some ATHEIST I know, have done some wonderful thing" and some Christian have done horrible things in the name of God. Did the pope said that ?

Javier20 .Javier20 Maybe he did. Certainly sounds like something he would say. My favorite is from Karl Rahner, something to the effect of “There are many that God has that the Church does not have, and there are many that the Church has that God does not have.”

That’s not your biggest fear, it’s your ‘biggest worry’ , not you biggest fear; your biggest fear is something else! 🤓

Is nationalism a sin/evil?
@BreakingInTheHabit

It depends what we mean by nationalism and what it leads us to do. I don't think there's a problem with being "patriotic," but when our nation becomes the most important aspect of our lives (basically a god) and causes us to hurt others who are not a part of this country, it is definitely a sin.

@@BreakingInTheHabit I see. That makes sense. I know of a quote of Pope Pius XII that says: “It is quite legitimate for nations to treat their differences as a sacred inheritance and guard them at all costs.”
