Also, this video was registered a week ago and I didn't know I was gonna get the 15mm f/3.5 and the 60mm f/2.8, my latest additions to the collection. Will talk more about these two lenses in another video.

Would it be safe to say that maybe not owning lenses and rather rent lenses also work? For my personal experience the freedom to try different glass helps expand on different textures and not feel obligated to stick with the same glass due to the pressure of a heavy investment is also a bit liberating. I personally own a set of these lenses and like them but have felt stuck with the same look. At the moment rehoused vintage lenses are becoming trendy and affordable. In the end it’s always about what the film asks for instead of imposing a look just because you own them. Just thinking outside the box. Not claiming there is a right or wrong way. It’s nice to create other options 😉

I’ve been building a set of contax but some are out of my budget so for the 35mm 1.4 I’ve gone for the classic which I got for a brilliant price (probably 1/5 of the price of a reasonable contax) they match well even though my contax are the old AE types with the ninja star iris. I still would like to see Matteo do something with the Helios 44-2, as good as the contax and Leica r are all my favourite photos and clips are on the helios, I’d love to see the footage in someone like Matteo’s capable hands. Do you think a 3 lens set could be enough to shoot all sorts of stuff? And which focal lengths (fullframe equivalent) would you pick? 24mm, 50mm and 85mm?
@MGFilmsNY
@MGFilmsNY 2 года назад
Absolutely, but you need to know what you like and want out of a lens set first. Is there a focal range you find yourself sticking to the most, or are you looking for a single wide, normal, and telephoto lens as the set? For me personally, a 24mm, 28mm, and 40mm (on Super 35) could keep me happy for the vast majority of what I shoot, but swapping the 24 for a 20 or the 40 for a 50 or 60 could definitely be a better fit for some projects. I will say though that the jump from 24 to 50 is quite large on the wide end. It might be better to go with a 24, 35, and a 50 or 85. Honestly, the best thing you can do is to go to a camera store to try a zoom lens with a long range on a full frame camera (since they have the most zoom lens options) such as a 24-70 or a 24-105 and take note of the focal lengths you find yourself landing on the most. That can serve as a good commitment free way to see what you like before you spend a lot of money on lenses. You could even rent something from sites like Lensrentals if you want to spend more time deciding and in more places than just a store. Good luck with the search though, and happy filmmaking!

For those that feel they are missing out by not being able to afford Leica R glass: I actually bought a set of mint condition mid 80s color matched Leica R's for ~10k and ended up selling them within the same year. The glass is obviously good, but even when compared to quality photo glass , the difference is very hard for anyone to notice. Things like the "Leica 3d pop" and "leica skin tones" are only noticeable by those with a trained eye, and even then there's some mental bias going on. With skin, I mainly noticed Leica glass controls the reds and removes them in a way. It's similar to what you see with an an IR filter removing the redness of IR pollution on a BMPCC camera...looks good of course, but you're talking about a
@matteobertoli
@matteobertoli 2 года назад
Totally disagree. Doesn’t matter if a client can’t tell. I can tell, my director can tell and honestly a client might not get the 3d pop or the bokeh thing, but it does see how crappy a Sigma looks in comparison. Following your theory Cooke, Arri Master primes or many other lenses wouldn’t have any reason to exist and those companies would be out of business. You CANNOT recreate the Leica look or the Cooke look in post. You just can’t. With lenses like Leica or Cooke I can go out any time of the day and get some incredible shots. Again, you can achieve some good results with a Sigma glass, but there is a reason if a Cooke S4 costs 10K and not $600. If you can’t see the difference your eye is clearly not trained or you didn’t spend much time using those kind of lenses.

@timeallofgreatestthe 2 года назад
Matteo’s spot on. Once you start getting into higher quality film equipment, very small (but required) additions cost loads of money. I work with the best equipment in the world on a daily basis (as a 600 1st in LA) and IMO the price of the Leica’s are actually one of the most substantially bargained pieces of film equipment today! The price of Contax, FDs, Zuiko’s, Nikkor’s, etc. are great for the quality. Also, beyond the image quality, my requirements as a 1st AC for a set of lenses includes a very long focus throw, proper gear pitch, step-less iris, a locking mount, durability, etc. all of these requirements cost loads of money as well. So yes, filmmaking is expensive but the additional costs for that (seemingly) small quality bump is justifiable IMO.

@@matteobertoli I think it's also a matter of whether or not you're at a place in your career where the optical differences are worth the price tag. For a lot of solo filmmakers, there's so much stuff to buy between camera bodies, accessories, lights, grip, a high powered computer, harddrives, glass, etc. that you really have to be in a good place with your income and career to shell out 10 grand+ for glass.
