@dridszzz5227 fr i don't believe it either, just to make gullible writers talk about it how's an indie label gonna give you that much money over the course of two years and all you're doing is watching tv but it is a cool way to make the fans appreciate the work you put into the album
I saw them in the US back then. Maybe it was that tour and it was too loud to enjoy. I was disappointed, expecting to hear a shoegaze band, not a noise band...
@Subs I was glad I remembered to bring some ear protection. Someone told me when they toured for the MBV album they had people passing it out at the door.
@@subs4794 Yeah I saw them in Dublin in '92 and it was so loud you couldn't even tell the songs apart. Kevin's brother's band Rollerskate Skinny played support. They were giving out ear plugs at the door on the way in lol.
I've never seen them. Love their music. Dinosaur Jr is the loudest I've been to. Have u seen them? I wonder who's louder. I have heard that many times about MBV though
I realized I've never seen Belinda actually smile until this video. Also, amusing is seeing Miki Berenyi there in the front row checking them out in that dingy little dive! 😊
Lush's first gig was only 6 months earlier, and they hadn't even been signed. They were still a noisy punk band playing opening slots at the Falcon. Lush apparently had already opened for MBV (and the Pastels) at the Fulham Greyhound in June of this year, and they had borrowed Colm's kit for a show at the Falcon on Oct 9th because the drummer for the headliners Sun Carriage refused to let Chris use his kit. Miki knew Kev well because he was Emma's boyfriend thru 1987. Emma also had worked for Creation's publicist. And Miki was also a student at PNL where this gig is.
Every time I see videos or hear their music, it just renews my love for them all over again. Truly a sign of a band that is indeed, one of your favorites.
saw them around this time in a tiny club - brilliant gig - ears were ringing for days - bought loveless the day it came out - saw them on that tour too - them and lush i could still listen to all day every day
Agree. I was like 8 when this was made too. She’s like the quintessential perfect indie rock girl in the best way! So shy (like all of them really) it’s adorable ☺️
Love the jukebox in the background 😂 That’s how gigs were, no frills, minimal lighting, amps on beer crates etc. Good band MBV, saw them many times live, thanks for sharing this 👍🏼
Thank you for putting this up. It brightened up my entire day. All of them are wonderful. I love how honest they are with their answers. They're so intellectual and soft-spoken. Belinda is so beautiful, well all of them are.
Yes, this video really struck me. Irish are beautiful people. I’m half Irish - Celtic. Looking at Kevin and Debbie is like looking in a mirror. Bilinda reminds me of someone I was in a band with in 2003.
I'm very curious about what happened with Island Records. Wikipedia states that when they signed for Island they were given a £250,000 advance. They never released an album on Island and broke up shortly afterwards. I know the information on Wikipedia should be taken with a pinch of salt, but if this is true wouldn't they have to pay back that money to Island Records?
What a little treasure to find! I first saw them when they were still more indie pop and I wasn't that impressed. I remember when they came back after a couple of years and friends had seen them and said how much they'd changed.
anyone else hate all the label talk, it’s so annoying how they always get peppered with those horse shit questions and don’t get more about their creative processes and such
Totally agree. It’s a bit odd how much Kevin is willing to entertain those questions, and yet he also seems to be fairly sure about their choices and how it will benefit them economically - contrary to how things actually played out. The ‘Major vs. Indie’ was the conversation though during the late 80s and 90s - it got even worse after Nirvana. I recall bands arguing for hours about whether they would ‘sell out’ or not - while playing to 10 people in Ohio.
This interview and gig excerpt were shown as part of a short feature on Creation Records on Rapido (BBC2), I think in November 1988. In that feature Guy Chadwick of The House of Love mentions having had success with their album "this year" and there is mention of them having just signed to Fontana. The gig is from the Polytechnic of North London on 11th October 1988.
Yes, SOON blew my mind first time I heard it one late night on radio, and I managed to tape most of it. Played it over and over till I could get the album -- still in my top 10 all-time favorite songs.
that moment at 2:35, made me feel nostalgia. only the three friends. debbie, colm and kevin. together into the pain, suffering, bad times since the early years.
Could a group this strange and special exist today? MBV were one of the most creative, inventive groups in the world in 1988, admired only by a coterie of music-heads, and performing in the back of a Waffle House for 20 people. This anonymity gave them the time and room to develop into something extraordinary and truly unique.
@@UFO_computers Ariel Pink is a genius for sure, and there’s Johnny Jewel and probably a few others. Although, you could argue that both of these artists are sort of music revivalists in a way MBV weren’t. But I’m not suggesting there’s a lack of talent today, I was just wondering if it’s possible to have a sustained “underground” scene for more than a few weeks anymore. As soon anyone comes up with anything vaguely interesting it’s immediately documented, hyped, proliferated, copied, etc.
there are likely hundreds of bands that are just as inventive as this band today -- the issue is that literally everyone is making music & there is so much of it, that getting discovered is nearly impossible. I'm sure 50 years from now, some internet archeologist is going to discover a band from our time that could change the world.
@@1gnore_me. what does it even mean to be discovered anymore? Every teenager has the ability to broadcast their music to millions of people. If music is being overlooked today, its only because no one understands or appreciates it yet, not because it’s hard to find.
@@xavierd.1668 Minute 14:56 you can see a red/orange head holding a cigarette, a girl with asian features that resembles Miki; due to the haircut, the pale skin, the face and the way she holds the cigarette it is very likely (obviously likely) it is her. I wouldn't dare to say that Lush is among the audience, tho Miki seems to have been there ,in perhaps, not the most sober state.
@@eatyourcereal8704 1988 was an amazing year for music, I could list 100 bands who I think are better, too many to choose from. By better I mean more talented, more skillful instrument players, more interesting and thoughtful lyrically, more experimental and modern, etc.
Thank you for this! I always enjoy my evenings spent chasing ooh shiny, 75 browser tabs open, discovering new shit I never knew existed, especially on known topics such as My Bloody Valentine. From watching folks do great bass covers of Type O Negative to here, what a journey!
Is that Miki Berenyi at around 14:55? Okay, read the rest of the comments, confirmed. what a great scene. Finally got to see them very late in the day on their last two US tours here on the West coast. Loud as the sun and just as blinding, beautiful.
Anyone catch Kevin’s answer to one of the questions “soon” which Avery little smile. It made Belinda laugh. What a couple of scamps. Luv them all. Colom and Deb shed!!!!!
@@startervisions They are great, there's no argument there. But if you haven't listened to Souvlaki or haven't revisited it in a while, I'd suggest you do so 👍
