Hi Brett, as I said before, poor show on BMW for not doing what was requested properly, it was a no brainer to strip the whole thing. Your video set me thinking, my car was Flashed, I know about flashing (ECU's lol) you need to see the readings from the Dyno to make adjustments, so now I am pleased in a way I am back to standard but not about the lack of power, I will try Celtic tuning. I will give you a plug in my next video, you have great content.

Oil down the spark plug hole, it’s like a compression test to test piston rings only a tighter test. In doing so oil sometimes fills the gap the rings have against the bore lifting the pressure in a cylinder common way to test for damaged rings versus a regular compression test dry.

Does this series share the same engine as the BMW i8 ? SamCrac had an i8 with a similar problem and the engines look very similar, his turned out to be the head had warped.

There is always the option of sending it to eastern europe and get it fixed for a fiver. Your trip + repair total will come less than any payment to dealer.

Would you not stick a 120i/125i engine in it for sport now? Or is this just a fit the same engine and sell job?

Might of missed it in the vid but what is the labour cost involved in fitting a new engine?

i would go get the money back from the tuner. obviously it was because of the tune.

Is it mapped that’s your issue it is bad map too much fuel burning too hot melting that piston

I bought a 2007 E81 118i in 2012 through Premium Selection. It broke twice in the next 5 years but cost less than €1000 to fix each issue. It was always serviced religiously, only in BMW shops. About 5 years later (150k on the clock) the check engine light started coming on now and again. Another year and 4 BMW shops (from 2 different countries) later, I was told the timing belt hadn’t been changed in time and now the engine is done for. It’d be €6000 to fix it so they advised me to scrap it and start new. I was obviously terribly disappointed with BMW at this point as it had always been serviced by them and nobody else. Even wrote BMW Germany, sent them the entire history and asked for a new engine but they politely turned me down saying it’s too old to worth saving (11 years old, 165k on the odometer). So I sold it for €800 for scrap, but not before dropping another €1200 to some dodgy ‘BMW non-official expert’ to see if he can fix it. Problem is, I’ve changed 4 different cars since (and it’s been less than 3 years) but I just don’t love driving any of them as I did my RWD BMW. I’m now looking for the newest used F20 I can find to use it as a daily. I’m closing 40 and realizing life is too short to drive something you don’t enjoy 😀

Inform your BMW dealership about sending a Kulanzantrag to BMW Munich (Head quarters) it is called in germany, translated its 'goodwill request' don't know if that is correct. If the destruction and malfunction after their research isn't caused because of abuse by you or the previous owner but an actual malfunction, they most likley will accept the request and take all costs. However, if your BMW never went to a BMW dealership but was done privately or by a regular workshop for the scheduled services preset in your iDrive System (Vehicle Info/Vehicle Status/Service/Service History (oil chance, braking liquid, brakes, air filter) they might suspect abuse or false maintenance. If the car's software was manipulated e.g. custom mapped you are screwed though.

I honestly think you’ve had really bad luck with your engine, the b38 for me was the most reliable engine ever. I stage 2 remapped mine with full supporting mods and done donuts, drifting burnouts with it and not a single problem, your engine was genuinely cursed 😭

I had a BMW that the engine failed on, BMW wanted £3,500! had my local garage take my engine out and strip it for bits and put a second hand engine in that i believe cost me £600 and £250 for them to fit it so within a week my car was back on the road for £850, they obviously checked the engine for issues and was completely fine so saved myself thousands, never ever go to main dealer! its all just a con when they say "oh we don't know" or "needs stripping down" its all to make money! would of been cheaper for you to just buy a second hand engine off ebay. People don't realise the main dealers want you to have a new engine or tests constantly, you think a BMW specialist cant find the issue with your engine they're specialised on? of course they can...they just tell you they cant find the issue so you need more testing and stripping done, most just BS you from the get go and say oh you need a new engine anyway! NEVER use main dealers for anything! i could of bought probably 3 used engines for same amount as BMW wanted...you paid £1,020 to BMW for literally nothing but testing, i got my whole car fixed within a week and £850 lol.

Glad you’ve got a plan sorted mate. The costs being thrown about here are mental. I had an m140 before my m4 and one of the selling points for me was how cheaply you could get a second hand engine and box if needed. Makes you feel better about running one with no warranty. Mental that its cheaper to just change engines than have the issue sorted but hey ho 🤣

It’s interesting how Tesla gets slated for their service, but from my (and family) experience, they are so much better than BMW. Just goes to show that each car can have issues. It’s quite sad to be needing a new engine so early though.

Bad luck! A new engine and move on, perhaps never to touch a BMW again.
