Brother laser printer. I won’t lie, this thing is a behemoth. But I’ve had it since 2017 and I think I’ve had maybe one paper jam? It works great, it’s super consistent, A++ for printing manuscripts. amzn.to/3tzIvZE
Alphasmart Neo2. Highly highly recommend. amzn.to/3cStKui

I have started querying a book and have started receiving rejections 🎉😂 while also job hunting for a software job... it's a tough market for both. But this video has helped encourage me to solidify my definition of success. I've worked towards querying for years, and now I have at least started, and that feels like a form of success.
@MichelleSchustermanAuthor
@MichelleSchustermanAuthor 9 месяцев назад
Oh gosh, querying AND looking for a job?? That sounds so stressful! You're right - getting to the stage where you have something to query is absolutely a success. Good luck with both this month!!
@shebreathesingold8043
@shebreathesingold8043 9 месяцев назад
At this point, my definition of success is if I can sit down and do my writing work and have the time of my life doing it. I really want to focus on enjoying the actual journey and not the "endpoint" (publishing) or the "rewards" (money, awards, accolades, etc). With that said, I do want this as a career so I care about money, and if rewards means more money then in a round about way I'd care about that too. But in terms of my own personal "how am I doing?" once the financial aspect is taken care of, then I'd revert to my current definition. Did I enjoy the hell out of today as a work day? If the answer is, yes, like today it was 100% yes. Then I count this a HUGE success.
@MichelleSchustermanAuthor
@MichelleSchustermanAuthor 9 месяцев назад
That's awesome. It's so hard to strike that balance in a career like this - and I think it's why so many writers burn out. Enjoying the process is absolutely an example of success!

I’m guilty! I have dreams of hitting the NYT bestseller list. Sometimes I even see myself dressing up for the Oscars because the movie based on my book has been nominated. Intellectually I know these are fantasies, so I push them to the back of my mind and write on.

 But watching your video made me realize the real estate those fantasies are occupying in my subconscious is putting pressure on my process. I never thought they caused any harm, but now I’m not so sure. I feel like I need to redefine my relationship with those ideas. I haven’t even started querying yet, for goodness sake. So today I imagined having my novel ready to query, and calling that a real success-something to be truly proud of. I plan to feed this dream instead of the fantastical ones. I don’t expect to eradicate the fantasies of massive success, but I like the idea of diminishing their influence. Thanks so much for your video, Michelle! And good luck with the submission process!
@MichelleSchustermanAuthor
@MichelleSchustermanAuthor 9 месяцев назад
I love this comment! We all have those fantasies, seriously. And I don't think there's anything wrong with that! But you nailed it - when that starts putting pressure on your process, it can really screw things up. Querying is ABSOLUTELY a success! It means you wrote and revised a novel, which is something the vast majority of people will never accomplish! Thanks so much for sharing, Mabel - and please let me know when you start querying so I can cheer for you!

I'm having to define success in small ways to keep from feeling like I'm not reaching any goals. E.g.: Did I write today? Did I finish a scene? A chapter? Even better, a book? Or did I try to write, not get much done, but managed to outline what I want to happen in this (and the next) scene in a way that had me closing this doc happy? Same with edits (which i am deep in right now) my successes being "did I drop word count, even if only by a word? Or did I keep it under my goal?". Even if the changes I made are negligible as far as word count goes, I see that as a win if I made that sentence or scene better. Speaking of, I'm glad I took this year off to write the other books in this trilogy I'm writing, because when I came back to the reread on Book 1 I found so insanely much that I could either edit concisely now that I had more understanding of this world building/characters (a 50 word paragraph to explain something being cut down to 15), or I discovered more info that needed to be added to the story. (Backflashes and such that fill in info and keeps the pace, as well as an entirely different first chapter and other drastic changes). I've probably changed about 20k or more, some in the form of scenes and paragraphs, others in pages (at least 5 pages entirely rewritten). As well as the addition of chapter breaks that split the existing chapters naturally to hopefully make it more engaging. (I finally managed to print out and reread this book, discovering I had a 50 page chapter without knowing it. 🤦) so it went from 20 chapters to 30. Anyway, that's what I'm using to define success while editing this book/writing this trilogy. And I'm so glad I took the year off from querying to do this because these drastic changes have made it so much better and give you insight to things you'd otherwise never know. (Vague, I know. But it's one of those "you had to be there" moments. Sorry!😅) Anyway, to try and make a long comment short. I'm so glad to hear from you (vlog wise) again, and loving all the Rosa pup clips. (Especially that last one. ❤) And I don't blame you for taking so long away from the channel in this respect, because I can definitely understand months flying by before you know it. (That's the year for me! Where did 2023 go?!) I'm happy to tune into the livestreams you do with Lisa and Robert (when I get a chance/remember). Anyway, I hope your work is going well and that you have a great weekend. 💜

That sounds perfect, K! I really think you've got the right idea when it comes to those small daily goals - they add up fast, and you feel like you're building momentum, rather than setting one huge goal and every day feeling like a failure because you aren't there yet. Also, I'm cracking up at the 50 page chapter! 🤣🤯 I know all of your patience is going to pay off when you're finally ready to query. And yeah, 2023 has flown by, right?! It's crazy. Hope you have a great weekend too!!

Success this month would be emotionally recovering from being dumped by my former agent, moving forward with my new agent, working on new manuscript ideas and meeting an editor who loved a pitch I submitted independently earlier this year.
