Old guy here. There was a book called “why business people speak like idiots “. The hope was that if we called this out enough people would recognize it and end the cycle. Fast forward 25 years and LinkedIn has only made it worse. I find myself reading mission statements of companies still having no idea what they do. And I’m part of the problem. I have “t shaped” and “servant leader “ in my bio. I hate it and disappointed in myself for doing it. But I have to put two kids through school and pay my bills.
@Vapourwear
@Vapourwear Год назад
Like, you really don’t. They can pay for school themselves. Where does the “I MUST PAY FOR MY CHILD’S ENTIRE EDUCATION.” attitude come from? You don’t. If you want to pay for private primary/secondary school because you don’t trust public, fair enough, but shouldn’t adult students be responsible for their own bills?

There's a good reason Bootcamps teach Ruby. Rails is used frequently in startups because you can hit the ground running lightning fast with it, and once the company is sold, they can worry about refactoring it to another technology. Startups are usually more flexible too when it comes to hiring bootcamp grads. It's not a dated thing to learn, and it's niche enough where there's good job security.
@MikaelAbehsera
@MikaelAbehsera 2 года назад
Its just not worth it, your walking into the field with such a niche skill and since it does so much on its own its hard to learn whats really going on, making your foundation weak. No hate ruby was fun, rails can eat it tho

Thanks for the honest review! I'm currently looking at some bootcamps, LHL included. I am in Toronto so hoping I can possibly start sometime before the year ends! Just a bit worried about the whole remote aspect nowadays as I have extreme difficulty focusing at home and when I study, I tend to go to a cafe. I've learned the basics of html/css/js/node and other things like mongo/mySQL etc but I think I fell into the "tutorial hell" where I've done SO MANY online tutorials and was exposed to so many different things but when I stop and sit down to work on something myself, I am left blank. Hence why I am considering a Bootcamp!
@MikaelAbehsera
@MikaelAbehsera 4 года назад
Nice, I made a video about how I got a job in 6 months and I talked about a strategy I used to learn a lot in a short amount of time, that might help. When it comes to being distracted you just have to find an environment where you can focus, personally, its loud music, fan blowing air in my face, and all the lights off. For some its the local library or like you said a coffee shop. LHL does node I think week 3? so your pretty much gonna pay for 8-9 weeks out of the 12. Depending on how much time you have It sounds like you can continue from here on your own you just need to adjust your environment. I think I saw you join in discord so feel free to hit me up there the others are helpful too!

The only useful info I took out of bootcamps is that they are trash. Any info that you could study online you SHOULD study online on your own. HR's hate hiring bootcamp students as they don't see the value of a person who spent money on something you can learn for free. Not only this person signalizes they cannot do simple study and organize themselves but also they will be way less motivated to learn something new once they got it into the industry. While the boi who learned it himself will catch up on his own, the bootcamp boi would sit there waiting for new tutorial or online class to be provided for that new technology. So if you took bootcamp as I did try to hide it from potential employer or at least have tons of your own projects so you don't appear lazy and unmotivated who jumped into IT just for money.

@fg4hg594
@fg4hg594 2 года назад
@@MikaelAbehsera you can still find help online as there is nothing that you face that nobody ever faced before. In fact when you're working you WILL face some problems that no one of your peer knows about so you have to problem solve even before you get in the field. There is absolutely no reason for bootcamps. If you don't know anything about programming then you simply don't like it enough. No teacher will teach you on how to love computers and strive to learn about them to the extend when you google it on your own and spend your personal time doing the code. And if you're that person then what could possibly they teach you on 8-12 month course that you don't know yourself already? I built ecomerce website from zero on three months on my spare time just by googling, troubleshooting and watching youtube, what can possibly those people teach you? Like, telling people you finished bootcamp is like telling them you're bad with money and don't know what you want.

Don't agree with above comment, College will not teach you, it will give you content, you choose what you want to learn and what you want to pull out of it, bootcamp is similar but more hands on, has more relevant information and it gets you started in the industry much faster. I still don't recommend either and would rather tell someone to try and do both hands on work, and finding good learning content on their own since they'll be doing that on the job :)

Hey just curious, do you find that the program did help you find employment at least? I hear a lot of bootcamps aren't necessarily teaching stuff that you can't get from Udemy courses, that being said, I figured if you don't have any sort of degree, it's probably very helpful to have a bootcamp on your resume rather than to try and land a job being 100% self taught. Most of the complaints I see about Lighthouse labs are about them making the false claim that you don't need any programming experience and a lot of people say you should really have the fundamentals down and at the very least be somewhat familiar with React, Node, and SQL so that you're not seeing it for the first time. I just wonder if it's still a good choice for me, so long as I make sure I'm very prepared and am almost using the program to better ingrain what i already know so that I'm totally prepared for the work force when i complete it, rather than having to possibly do a fair bit of self study still afterwards to feel comfortable landing a job.
@MikaelAbehsera
@MikaelAbehsera 4 года назад
Having the bootcamp on my name meant literally nothing, especially one thats somewhat unknown like lighthouse labs. Often at job interviews they asked me what the hell is a code bootcamp and pretty much ignored it once they saw it didn't give me a degree. But they didn't push me away for not having one, they just passed on to the more important parts of my resume like my projects the directly prove my theoretical and practical knowledge, and from there they can further test you using a code test or wtv. When I went to bootcamp I had very little knowledge about code in general just played around with it and made some mini projects. They do have a precourse but its REALLY basic. IMO if someone can get some familiarity with any of those (React, Node, and SQL) they should avoid going to bootcamp and give a serious try at going solo. @MikaelAbehsera
@MikaelAbehsera Год назад
I would recommend learning on your own, either at work (if you can hide it), or at home after work. Make yourself a goal, for example: build a website for sports statistics, and figure out whats needed to make it as you learn, for example: start with javascript, then learn some libraries, then learn how to make a data base, then learn to put it all together and boom you are now a webdev! Thats an example but thats how I would recommend doing whatever you wanna learn. Also, best thing you can do without a degree (and with) is prove your knowledge through projects that display skills a job wants to see, so if a company wants X programming language, learn that, make a project with it, and then put that on your resume. Hope that helps!

I would do some research into it, however you might want to consider going to university as you really need to stand out. It has become very niche within the languages out there, making it harder for students to find jobs with it, making it some what not practical. But, you can learn how web works with ruby and transfer that to another language. Also, If I was in charge I'd swap ruby for python instantly.

@@MikaelAbehsera I see, thanks. Would you be able to recommend some good links for online tutorials or just stick to RU-vid? I've tried Udemy but it looks like they are selling very old courses as new ones.

Is bootcamp a good place to start if you have little to no knowledge of software engineering?
@MikaelAbehsera
@MikaelAbehsera 4 года назад
Start off learning on your own, for me this free course was amazing but some hate it, once you learn on your own you get a feeling for what you need in terms of outside help (course, mentor, bootcamp, etc)

Please, when you speak to camera, do not twitch about with a pen. It is very distracting. Your background music also has computer-sounding beeps in it that make me think either windows is complaining, or my phone is getting messages. You have good info but it is hard to get to it as your presentation is getting in the way.

Maybe you should have gone to a better boot camp? No one in silicon Valley knows the boot camp you went to. So I'm guessing there are levels to it? Sucks that you got screwed...
