Waterstones Book Of The 'Year: www.waterstones.com/blog/wate... 'My Brilliant Friend' by Elena Ferrante. 2015 Europa Edition. www.bookdepository.com/My-Bril... / candysomething / candysomething
I am from Napoli I have just read all 4 books. You must read all 4 books in sequence in order to appreciate the story properly. I was literally captured by the whole thing ! The story, the city contest, the social and political phases of italian history. This deep and dramatic friendship. In italian language her style is superb. I hope that it's not diminished by translation. Thanks
i have read all 4 books in arabic translation it's so good but i really want to learn italian language because her books i wanna know how they're beautiful Direct from the writer
I'm italian and I wanted to read more italian autors : Elena Ferrante was THE best choice. Yes, her writing is as beautiful in italian, so fluid and captivating. A light read during exams ! I'm reading the third book in the series and it's going strong.
Lol, RU-vid is recommending this to me 4 years later xD I'm Italian and I had been living abroad for a few years when my mum lent me this very book. And wow, it was the first time in years I read a novel in my own language and it made me fall in love with it so deeply, it was a truly unique experience. These books are so captivating, the way she writes is stunning. Her descriptions might not be conventional but every detail is so vivid it's like being there with the characters. My favourite book series in a long time, if not my favourite period.
I've read the 4 books in Italian, my mother tongue. I completely agree with you: hew writing, the plot, the vivid characters make this tetralogy a masterpiece 💕
Candice, I definitely suggest reading little excerpts like that in future videos! Totally sucked me in even when I was on the fence about checking this book out at the start.
Hey, I recently read a book called "We Were Liars" by E Lockhart. It's an amazing book with a super plot twist. I would really recommend you read it, and maybe even make a video on it because you'll more than likely be hooked. It's a young adult novel, because I am indeed a young adult, but the style of writing is so brilliant and unusual I think you will adore it. Love your videos as always x
I love talking about books with other people, so I am more likely to choose award-winning books just because I know that there will be lots of people who have read them and want to discuss them! Though actually even if I don't end up discussing the book much, reading popular/award-winning novels still makes me feel like I'm participating in something, in a way that reading lesser known books doesn't.
That excerpt you read was so lovely :) I see literary awards as a sort of extra little point of interest when buying a book, like if there's a quote from an author I like on the cover, or a really intriguing quote from inside. But I don't think I'd ever really buy a book with a premise that didn't interest me just because it won an award.
Just stumbled across this video and I absolutely loved it! First off, I think you accent is gorgeous and I love the sound of you voice. It was great to hear you thoughts on this book and the writer(s) so I'll be sure to check it out! Much love :) xx
My Brilliant Friend is the best book I read in 2015. I just bought the second book in the quartet. I absolutely love Ferrante's writing. Finally, a book for grown-ups.
Candice, you could honestly manage to sell any book to me (my goodreads to-read list is proof of that!) - thank you for your insightful and chatty reviews! :)
Hi Candice, thank you very much for your interesting review. I just started seeing the first 2 tv-series episodes... just outstanding and surely beyond my expectations. By the way, you're beautiful, and it's enjoyable to hear your English. Ciao!
I really love the movie my brilliant friend bc I was watching her movie for some few days so is the most beautiful movie that is new or idk lol soooooooo........... I love it. 😍😍😍☺️☺️☺️☺️
If a book actually wins a prize doesn't have much effect on whether or not I'll read it, but I must admit shortlists do sway me. I guess it is nice to have a narrowed down list of books to consider when there is so much out there, also I like how with certain prizes like the Man Booker a lot of people will be reading the books that get shortlisted so easier to find people to discuss them with.
Hi! I'm Italian, I wanted to advise you, the Ferranti also the book "the dark child", I do not know if the title is in English so it is really beautiful. if you want to look for it is 2006. In italian is "La figlia Oscura".I love that writer.
I'm Italian but I've never read anything by Elena Ferrante, now I'm really curious about it, I'll definitely check it out! If you'd like to read more contemporary Italian authors with a beautiful writing style I definitely suggest you read some Alessandro Baricco, I absolutely love him! If you know the film "The legend of 900", he's the author of the original story, which is stunning!
I finished the book but actually i was not able to find anything interesting in the novel...where is the epic the climax...i dont know. i only read it to the end because sometimes you csn find the resolution at the end...but i failed to find it.
Great review!! I was kind of on the fence when it came to getting this book but now you convinced me. By the way have you read The Elegance of The Hedgehog ?
You should it seems like you'll really enjoy it since My Brilliant Friend has the same sort of vibe. It was originally written in French and was later on translated and published by the same publishing company as My Brilliant Friend.
Even in translation the brilliant crafting of that sentence comes through. If it is representative of the quality of authors writing it deserves recognition. If Waterstones awards are a mechanism to sell more books they may shy away from an anonymous author that is unwilling to do a tour, etc.. Sometimes I check who won certain awards, ex., the Man Booker, because the winners are always well written, though often not of interest to me.
Have you heard of Katherine Rundell? I think you would love her, she is so beautiful with her descriptions and such. It's wonderful. My Favorite of hers is Cartwheeling in Thunderstorms but her new one The Wolf Wilder is outstanding and maybe more beautiful to read as winter draws near.
+Angelika Nikolaieva yeah it's German, Goethe wrote the first Bildungsroman, called "Willhelm Meisters Lehrjahre", it's a book following the lifestory of a singular character
thefirstandlastdary thank you for responding, i'm German :D i just didn't really understand it acoustically, it kinda sounded like an Italian word :D thank you nonetheless! Xxxx
I imagine the author would be okay with literary prizes - as long as they are serious/well-thought-through - because it is the book speaking for itself, and not people trying to get more money from the book. I have quite limited knowledge about that whole issue, though, so I may be entirely wrong. For me, prizes mean next to nothing as a reader. They do not tell me how much I will enjoy or relate to a book. As I get older that might change, though.
Oh I recently read this book too and it was intoxicating. Big feminist statements to be found here too. Check out the Australian covers which are very evocative of Italy - done by Text Publishing, lovely. xx
