The omega spring was the reason I ditched on a Griptilian and went straight to the Para 3, as someone living very far from the US too, I know it will take ages to get some replacements!!!
I had the same experience. Bought a bugout, broke the spring in a week. Benchmade wanted me to send it back and pay shipping to send it to them instead of just shipping me omega springs, so I returned it with free shipping, and bought a pm2.
I just bought a bunch of extra omegas. I mean they are cheap and many places with tooling make non BM branded springs that work better than factory. I highly suggest spare parts.
@@RadDadisRad But should you really need to buy a bunch of them and change them out?. Shouldn't the knife just work?. I wouldn't want to carry around springs and a torx set just to have to field repair a knife.
That grip is all about profit for BM. Cheap scales n internals, s30 yu can get under $60,easy, just a $$maker. I own a Tenacious between BM n Spydie. Case, Buck, CSteel, etc.🔪
Finally a video about broken omega springs! Mine lasted probably three months max. Getting new springs in czechia or sending the knife to benchmade pretty much wasn't an option. So I made my own springs and it works better than original ones :D
I love the part about watching grown men open boxes and holding and caressing on their knives like it was a loved one! So true!! I laughed so hard! Great video!
I'm from Oregon, where Benchmade is headquartered and I only own one. It's a pricey "fidget flipper". But then again, all chichi $$$ knives are nowadays.
@@RadDadisRad I mean the majority of people don’t want to pay over $100 for a product they have to modify with aftermarket products in order to insure it remains usable. They’ll just buy something that doesn’t require that.
@@griffinm9 yes. I'll never own another BM. Omega springs...and auto springs are GARBAGE from them. Sold all of mine. Had 7 at one time......never again. They can keep their butterfly tax.
I’d like to check that out, I have the Manix 2 lightweight and even with athletic shorts on you can’t tell it’s clipped in your pocket sometimes, and I think the Para 3 lightweight is even lighter.
I can't find a whole lot wrong with that statement. It is an excellent super sharp slicy wonderful everyday carry and it comes in a lot of varieties 👍😎🤘
I don't know if I'd say "won't let you down." Benchmade's warranty is pretty great compared to spyderco. Plus spyderco's obsession with red lock tight doesn't speak volumes to their belief that their own knives could be maintained or disassembled. I've been told to pound sand when it came to having my spyderco military fixed under warranty, and it basically just needed a new scale because it chipped around the screw. After market would have had me covered if spyderco hadn't put it together with permanent thread locker. They are not as reputable in the warranty department as they should be considering their cost.
Maybe a bit of r&d could have prevented that. But what can you expect from America's premier knife maker? That stuff costs money. Meanwhile my cheap China knives keep on going.
I had exactly the same problem during a two weeks vacation. The knife became half dangerous and half useless... Benchmade has sent me a replacement spring free of charge here in Europe, but now I never carry a benchmade only, and when travelling with one knife, I go for a Spyderco.
Probably just for fidget factor variety plus that Bugout is seriously lightweight, even for its size. However, I have one Bugout (as a collector) and think they feel cheap & overly flexy in the hand… especially for their price.
@@RadDadisRad I guess you have never heard of the compression lock? I guess if you are missing fingers or are drunk all the time it might be hard to open and close a frame lock one handed. Get with the times, and stop being a BM fanboy
Buy a Ganzo knife from AliExpress that uses a similar mechanism. You can steal the wire-spring (called an Omega spring I think) from the Ganzo to fix your Benchmade. Might come in faster than a replacement directly from Benchmade. I don't understand why they don't include **several** extra springs with each new knife...
Because Benchmade would rather you send the knife in and wait several weeks forcing you to buy a second knife because you can't live without one of their knives in your pocket.
I would suggest skipping step one(buying the Benchmade) and go right to step two. Buy the Ganzo. Save big bucks. Use it forever or until you lose it and buy another. The price penalty for buying American made knives is just ridiculous. China makes really good knives too. I would greatly prefer to buy American made knives, but they have priced themselves out of the market for the most part.
I've seen so many people on youtube video comments saying they've never had a problem with the omega springs. And yet, here you are. I hope you can get new springs in some kind of timely fashion.
That part is called the omega spring you pretty much have to send the knife in to Benchmade! Good luck with that because the time it will take them to fix that lol…….you can find the omega spring on eBay if you wanna replace it your self, which is pretty simple!
If you buy a bug out, be proactive buy springs as a replacement. I’ve had mine for over 2 going on 3 years and still riding on the original. I use my knife hard I’ve torn it open dozens of times to clean it and customize hardware. Great knife.
I know it's not a common occurrence, but failures like this make me question the axis lock reliability. For EDC is not a big deal, but if you depend on your knife for work or while being out in the woods, this is definitely worrisome.
@@TheMasonator777 the omega springs are installed in the locking mechanism, which is all metal. They don't engage the plastic handle, as seen on the knife close up towards the end.
i have several benchmades. bugouts, mini bugouts, 940s,.. on every single one of them one or both omega springs broke. and so did the replacement springs. and i'm not giving them any hard use.
Stay away from hipster knives and all the material romanticism found in all the videos promoting them. They might be fun for flicking while sitting on the couch drinking craft beer and stroking a bio scented oiled beard but they are not reliable in the bush. And next time bring a fixed blade.
I’ve had numerous Benchmades over the years. Never had one go out. Not saying one won’t, but they’re not as fragile as people say in my experience. I think the problem is with people pulling back on the omega springs on one side only. You need to pull back on both sides of the Omega springs at the same time. If not you can expect problems.
Cold Steel American Lawman - not as fidgety (that being said - I still fidget with it like there's not tomorrow, works super well) but that lock will basically never let you down.
Right, for use around a farm or hard use in general I want the strongest lock available. If you want a toy then you can't be disappointed when it breaks as all toys do.
How to fix your Bugout: Step 1: Return the Bugout Step 2: Buy a Spyderco PM3 Edit: Never mind, I see you already have a PM3. As for those omega springs, as usual they're always breaking at the bottom of the curved area. That's where all of the stress is when the lock is actuated.
I believe since you're outside the US benchmade will ship you new omega springs, if not there's some Etsy sellers who sell them but I'm not sure if they ship to Norway. Some people also have tutorials on RU-vid on how to make them with guitar wire
They will shipped in EU im from Croatia and I bought 940 Osborn and I realy like that knife . And in first 3 month one spring brake and I sent mail to Banchmade and they sent mee a spare Omega spring. And I had it 7 days and one omega spring just broke. So I order feu . But that is not answer.
100% get a pm2 it was my 1st spiderco. I got a benchmade superfreek at the same time, I think the pm2 gets carried 98 days out of a 100 over the superfreek.
Yeah, the Omega springs is definitely an Achilles Heel for Benchmade. Omega spring is made from 304 steel. 316 is better in my opinion. That said, it's rare that an Omega spring will fail due to snapping.
That para 3 is built like a tank! Bug out is a cool blade shape but can’t bring myself to pay so much for what feels like a cheaply built knife. This reinforces my thought... Thanks for sharing.
I didn't like the bugout much, nor did I really care for the Para 3 everyone's suggesting here. I prefer the delica 4 over both of them, but to each their own and all that 😁
@@joi777 I have had a few, still have 2 left. They're a little on the large side for me. Honestly the Delica is kinda on the max side as well. I've found I don't need anything larger than 3 inches for a blade. Less than 4 inches closed is good for me.
Benchmade's quality control has dropped off in the last few years that I have noticed. Sad to see since they are one of the big knife manufacturers that has been around a while. Hopefully they dont fall into the same pit as gerber
Awe man that's a bummer. The dreaded Benchmade omega spring.... A proprietary part they won't release to the public despite issues with it's durability.... When my brother showed me his Benchmade I cringed then gave him a Spyderco for Christmas. I hope you get some resolution but I'm betting it will take a good while and your better suited to buy another Spyderco
He has a standard G10 Para 3 already. I have both and was kinda disappointed how little difference in weight in the hand, between the two there really was. *I think it’s officially like 0.3 or 0.4 oz.
ok, so disclaimer, I'm a spyderco fanboy, that said, i love my M4/aluminum tanto bailout. It's seen about as much use as your bugout did in the video, it usually goes in my pocket when I go into town (going into town is a monthly thing vs at home it's a PM2 or Shaman depending on what I'm doing in the yard. But even though I have the bailout in my pocket, I keep an old crkt m16-01kz, a Kershaw Launch 9, streamlight and CR123a batteries in a sunglasses case, and Spyderco Manix in my man-purse/backpack. And in the car there are a couple fixed blades and a Ka-Bar LDK in my wallet, and a gerber keychain knife (zip blade) on my keys, and you know I think I'm realizing I might have a problem...
Seems like the Bugout has a problem with the omega springs breaking all the time. I have 12 Benchmades, and no spring breakages, and I fidget constantly! In the end though, carry 2. Shaman, and an Adamas...go big or go home! HAHA!
A fixed blade knife is essential for outdoors/emergency carry and use. Taking a folder is asking for trouble. The benchmade has a known problem. The omega spring breaking and causing knife failure is the reason I quit buying benchmade knives. It's the most common problem with the axis lock system.
I'm sorry you had this issue with the bugout. The Springs are sometimes known to break. Benchmade should replace them for you if they ship that far. I absolutely love the knife and sounds like you do as well. If you want to look for a third party selling the springs they are called Omega Springs. This might help find some faster.
That sucks man!! Never owned a BM for that reason. Went with Para 3 instead. Love it and bought multiple variants now to test different steels. Just don't pry with any of them or tips will break. Your YT video part was hilarious and true.
I have the bugout and several para3s , para3 is my first choice , I always carry it, when I carry my bugout I still have my p3 in my pocket also, want be caught without it.
@@FarmerE yes! If I can only find one in my country I would buy it for sure. Thing is, they just fly out of stock due to their popularity. Awesome knife.
I think the Spyderco Paramilitary 2 Salt in Magnacut might be your jam mi amigo - supposed to come out in the next month or so. Benchmade has been producing pure poo lately.
If you go to a local arts and craft store, you’ll be able to buy some memory wire. Buy some memory wire with a similar thickness to the broken omega spring. Take out then omega spring that is still intact as a template and all you’ll have to do is bend the memory wire to the same shape (or close enough) and cut it to length and you’ve got unlimited omega springs for under $5. Ive done it with my 940’s broken spring and now I just make them as I need 👍🏻
Benchmade knives are really not worth buying. Nice designs but cheap materials, bad lock, bad quality control and expensive AF. I really don't understand all the hype with axis locks. Why TF would you buy a knife with a lock that is known for braking after time?? And if that lock brakes, you can't use that knife. "BuT yOu CaN gEt ThE sPrInG rEpLaCeD!!" Yes, but I don't want to spend my time trying to contact them and beg them for a freaking spring. I don't have the time for that. It's like buying a really nice car which is known for braking after a year. Same with knives. We all like nice designs but most importantly they have to be reliable. Knives are freaking tools, not display pieces. Benchmade really shouldn't exist, they misunderstand the basic purpose of a knife.
YUP Thats what benchmades do ... mine have broke on me at work when I need it the most. So Im all compression lock now spyderco LW para3 apy27 smoked every benchmade I have griptilians , mini grips, bugout s30v , m4 , 20cv , bailout 3v and alum m4 . They stay In the knive box. Let the spyderco do all the real work .
After a month and a half, I also broke my right side omega spring, I’m very disappointed, meanwhile I receive the new springs, I’ve returned to my indestructible Spyderco delica
Screw knifes with springs (accept my Stitch) If you really need it jam a screw or whatever to hold the lock bar forward and rig a sheath, then throw it in a river and use your Spyderco, Microtech, Strider, ZT, Chris Reeve Sebenza carrys real easy as a backup. Had a Bugout, just didnt like it. many better choices without a spring. Good knifes are worth wasting money on.
Spyderco or Cold Steel. No more worries again. Never understood the love for that Benchmade lock. You life depends on a mm spring?? Try the triad-lock from Cold Steel or Spyderco. My edc is the Cold Steel American Lawman. You would definitely like that one. Rock solid
I just about cut my finger off tonight because the lock blade didn’t work. Texting this as I’m being taken to the hospital. There is an absolute flaw with this knife……well mine anyways.
"i probably should have brought seven." bwahahahaha! omega knife probably not the best option to solo for a compulsive fidget knife. lol. Farmer E needs to find that flipper, front flipper, thumb stud, spydie hole, button lock, compression lock, liner lock, combo knife to keep his fidget skills honed.
I was so disappointed with my bugout. I didn't break the spring, but my blade edge rolled in middle while cutting a box. In the first day I got it, I hate s30v steel. I'd rather have v10 or even cheaper steel. Completely junk. If I could go back I'd buy the kizer dukes way better knife and half the price.
This happened to me twice now. Also with SOG. SOG will send you springs for free. Benchmade will not, also they probably wont honor warranty that you took it apart. Stick with your para3.
I never understood the popularity of Benchmade knives. Mostly way overpriced junk from my experience. It makes me shake my head at how they're still in business after years of quality control issues & at higher prices than ever. Stick with Spyderco or even Cold Steel if you want quality, strength, dependability & value.
Don't bother ordering a new Omega spring. Don't bother with memory wire (it'll soften). Go with music (piano) wire as it's ten times stronger. You only need two needle nose pliers to fabricate the springs. Get Precision Brand Music Wire in .031 inch diameter.
One knife is ok if you have a coldsteel. If you buy overpriced over hyped benchmade you probably do need a knife a day. My real world advice to you. Benchmade bugout is a knife for the office guy. If you do real world work then you need a real work knife. Coldsteel recon, voyager, sr1, code 4. People that really use knives usually prefer a real lock coldsteel can't be beat, next probably a buck 110, an all these knives are cheaper then the bugout.
Should have bought a houge exo4 34452 . If you can get your hands on this model it's spectacular. I've beat this model up real serious like and am very impressed. Now seeing your video a year later. I would buy a deka. I've had both bugout and the deka. The tuffness is immediately noticeable. The deka is a much more capable unit. Much more.
The bugout doesn't seem like the greatest knife and it seems overpriced. The fact that you were willing to buy only in the all blacked out version says it all. I bought a Japanese made spyderco backlock with full metal liner. I bet mine will hold up longer. If you don't know to buy Japanese by now... lol.
I personally have never broken and Omega spring but I often take one of Omega Springs out so I can pull the access bar back with just my thumb.. that is my next question isn't there to Omega Springs in their you broke both of them?
Looks like a pretty cheesy little spring You would think that for what they charge They could do a little better I never bought a Benchmade They always seemed over priced And over hyped
Lmao good luck ordering an omega spring! Oh wait you cant. You have to ship your brand new 150$ pos to bench made for who knows how long for them to “fix” it.
Get a decent fixed blade knife for any serious cutting. Mail it back to Benchmade and they will repair it. The Bugout is a very light weight/light duty knife.
Same thing happened to mine haven't fixed it yet and that happened over a year ago kinda just turned me off from Benchmade, I was excited because they're local to Oregon but so is Kershaw so that's what I keep in my pocket now
Every time I get a new Benchmade the first thing I do is take it apart and swap out the original omega springs with some aftermarket ones. Haven’t ever had a problem with the aftermarket springs but have had 3 of the original springs break on me. It’s no fun and my main complaint with Benchmade
I have carried A bench made 940 With the exact same Springs for 10 years and beat the hell out of it no problem. That is an unusual situation. Is it fixed?
