My Car Was In a 1980s TV Movie, and THE FONZ F-BOMBED ME

Here’s a wild story about how my 1970 Dodge Super Bee ended up in a 1984 TV movie directed by Henry Winkler and starring Scott Baio with a cameo by Danny DeVito! My car got crashed a little, another Dodge and a 1964 Olds got smashed a lot, and I crushed on Heather Locklear along the way. On top of all that, “Fonzie” dropped the F-bomb on me! Later, we made use of the automotive leftovers on our own muscle cars.
I hope you enjoy these old photos and memories and come back for more on The David Freiburger Channel-D/F

Freiburger is in many ways the missing link of the Hot Rod anthology. He somehow connects all the old timer stories and informs that record where necessary. And of course continues to be hugely relevant up to today.

This channel could be 100% telling stories of the glory days of American Hot Rodding, and I’d be all-in. Freiburger has a natural gift of being able to tell a story in such a way that makes it feel like you’re chatting in the garage over an engine with some beers, but he’s also very thorough. When David tells a story, he seems just as geeked up about it now as he probably was back then.

I had the pleasure of working as a production designer for Henry Winkler when he came up to Toronto to shoot a McdDonalds commercial back in the early late 1980's or 90's. I think it was one of the first commercial, if not the first, commercial that he had directed. and I found him to be a perfect gentleman and a really nice guy. A Fonz...er Fond memory.

People freak out on me when they see me STILL daily-driving my '61 Valiant up here in Michigan winters. I tell them, "what do you think they did in '61? Squirreled it away in a barn for preservation and never drove them?" I keep it clean and drive it year-round. Simple as that.

Wow! You brought back so many memories. I too would drive from Escondido, up to San Clemente so I could get different Recycler newspapers. Then look for mostly Mopars. Others too. I used to drive to every city in San Diego County looking for any Mopar in yards! Doing what they do on TV now, only in the early 80's. I bought up over 400 cars. Some pretty rare especially now. Ah, the good old days! Oh yeah, nice buying R/T Chargers, Challengers, roadrunners and 4 factory big block Darts w/ 4-spds, for $300-1500!

Great story Dave! I'm your age, yeah finding old "hot rods" in the 80s was fairly easy. I was into Chevelles, had a couple 1967's, even 4 doors, front fenders would fit, etc. You end up with lots of usable parts, alternator brackets, little clips, motor mounts, window handles. LOL again love the stories, it's what happens when we become old timers :)

Very cool story, Dave! Between you reminiscing and be-bopping around SOCAL (where I lived for 15 years), and Dulcich's shop/ranch in the San Joaguin Valley (where I grew up), you really bring back memories for me. Every time you mention Fresno, my ears perk up. Bought many parts for my cars at Turners Auto Wrecking in the 70s and 80s ... was actually friends with the son, Jimmy. He'd just let me go in and get whatever I needed. It was like a candy store! Gotta say, I LOVE the 200S wheels! First set I put them on was a 1965 GTO back in 1977 (15x8 rear and 15x7 front with Radial TAs). Second set were polished 17s on my 1996 GMC Sierra. Again with BFG TAs (white letters OUT of course. :) I liked them because they were different and not nearly as popular as the straight spoked version but still screamed 'hot rod' to me. BTW, VanHalen was also frequently blasting in that GTO ... from the 8-Track! lol

I know exactly what you mean about muscle cars not really being that valuable back then. I bought a '69 Charger RT/SE 440, 4 speed, Dana 60 that had been sitting in a guy's back yard for several years. The engine was all apart and in the trunk, gave $350 for it. Put the engine together and got it driving. Sold it for $1800 and thought I did pretty well 😕 Here in Indiana we had the Trader paper and Wheels and Deals that we scoured for car deals!

That's so awesome Dave!!! Because when I was 15 I remembered seeing this movie!!! It was corny but I loved the cars!!!! Such a small world to find out this was your Superbee I've drooled over for so many years! And I am so glad to know that Coronet 500 wasn't your super bee! Because I remember as a kid being upset they wrecked that car! I didn't care at the time abt the Oldsmobile but now at 38 I'm cringing that they wrecked that too! Honestly Dave I'm a word person I like words I like stories! A car has way more meaning to me if the story behind it is great! Partially why I'm such a big fan of Roadkill Roadkill Garage! Because you including the stories of the car the people behind the cars that's what makes it so special to me! Thanks to you I just wanted to mention! Great job man! I find you tell stories alot like I do which bugs some people because I'll include every detail so I no they understand everything but I appreciate you do it as well!!! Absolutely insane finding out this was your car I really liked that And The Fonze yelling at you but I would have freaked out to had they crashed my 88 Gt Foxbody because it's your first car it means so much more than a car! People will say it can be replaced...!!!! It can't theres only 1 first car! And as a kid we worked our A#$'s off to afford that car to chase the girl we liked!!!! I was proud of my mustang i painted myself! When I got it at 16 payed $1000 $100 a week in payments while I pushed shopping carts at price chopper to pay for it! It was rattle canned flat black very badly might I add! My friends called it the rustang Same 5.0 5spd that you put I rottson! They haited getting outran by the Rustang!!!!! I knew mechanics thanks to my father being a diesel mechanic for a bus company!!! But I took autobody and collision repair in high-school to learn how to paint so I could paint my own mustang to shut everyone up!!! I did it was gloss black with red letters on the body kit!!! It was beautifully!!! We lost out House so I sold it!!! Established my own used tire business a few years later wanted to replace my mustang!!! Actually found my mustang and bought it back 5 years later for the same $1000 I originally payed for it! Repainted it again because the guy I got it from painted these awful smurf blue stripes up the car! Repainted it, put weild drag draglite rims on it, a 6 inch cowel induction hood!!! It was how I always dreamed!!! Because I could afford it now!!! I just finished it! Put pics on my fb and 3 days later someone msgs me offering Me a red 68 Mustang Coupe!!! 289 c4 auto! One of my dream cars! it ran and drove so i traded him! Later I regretted it!!!! The torque boxes were rotten rear frame rails we rotted and I no longer had a shop to work in or a welder to be able to fix it myself!!! I sold it made some money!!! Then was trying to buy that 70 charger 500 that the guy who beat me to it!!! Couldn't get $10,000 for it and had it crushed!! Filmed them sticking forks thru it saying don't bother the seller if your not willing to pay the price! all this crap as they crushed it!!!! I have pics of it over 5 years where it sat 19 years as the owner was in prison and I was leaving letters with his mother for him trying to buy the car!!! It was a 383 2brl 727!!! I'm pretty sure you commented once abt this video and if you want the pics of how it sat please just ask I'm more than happy to show you!!! And Dave!!! Thanks for my education!!!! All the hotrod magazines I read over the years as a kid I later find out! You wrote the articles that I learned off of combined with my dad teaching me whatever he could!!! Thanks man! I really appreciate it!!!

I remember you telling this story a long time ago. Maybe in the magazines. I miss my youth.

Super cool story Freiburger. We're the same age and grew up watching the ABC "After School Specials" and I remember watching the CBS version too along with the episode with your car. Can't tell you how much time I spent reading the classified ads in the local newspaper and PennyPower to buy cars, even though "adulthood" whatever that is.

Even though the bee driver was "drunk" it looks like the olds driver ran a stop sign. Great story.

David you might enjoy this story... I live outside of Detroit. Back in the early 90s got a ramdom call from a stranger who couldn't tell me his bame. He was told i had a 1970 442 and if i wanted to sell it. I didnt but gave the guy a friend's number who had another 70 442 for sale. He ended up selling to to this secretive stranger. Turned out to be the #2 car in the movie Demolition Man! The #1 car was already fully restored and used for up close shots. My friends car was painted and received a quicky resto. The #3 car was a rusted cutlass full of bondo which got smashed. My friends #2 car was the one used in the action shots with its original good running 455/th400 combo with original 3.42 axle. They did not smash #1 or #2 just the rust bucket. The car sold after filming and who knows where its at now.
