Excellent, excellent advice. After a degree in Politics and a Masters in Law my daughter realised that she had been suppressing her creative side for years and could no longer deny her artistic tendancies. Already good at drawing and painting, she's now taking art lessons as well as researching art history personally with a view to becoming a tatoo artist as well as having other projects. Her father and I are delighted as we have faith in her and only want her to be happy. Carpe diem !

Hey ladies, marrying a man who can take care of you financially isn't necessarily the easiest way to recognizing what you'd like to do in life. It's a common mistake that I'm guilty of making too. As a matter of fact, I don't have to work. I want to work though, and I have no idea what I want to do with my life. my options are great but that doesn't help, really, because you find yourself being pulled in too many directions
@Raquii98
@Raquii98 6 лет назад
Well, I think in a way we are all pulled in too many directions. And by the way, considering to marry a millionaire doesn't necessarily mean considering to marry a millionaire man. hahah if it just was that easy, to find a rich person who suits you and be able to pursue your passions without worrying about money

Yes! I did a similar thing. My life was "ok" living in the US, but I saw that everyone at work just stared at their watches, waiting to retire. I did not want to follow in those footsteps. I also wanted to learn a new language, so I picked German. Fast forward, fell in love with my tutor, quit my job, sold my furniture, packed 2 suitcases and moved to Berlin. Spent some years getting my permanent visa (whew.... was work), but never regretted it, never looked back. I now work from home, on-line and feel life is better when you take chances and stop telling yourself no. I have been designing some practical things lately, like a functioning purse. haha So much to see in Berlin and a good purse is essential. Anyway, enjoy your videos so much! Look forward to seeing more.

When I left I school I went on to study art and design. When I began my course, I didn’t know what I wanted to do as a career- but discovered that by the time I finished my final piece. I created an evening wrap based on the context of fashion and culture of the new woman of the 1920s. I’ve always loved historical fashion, and would love to focus on constructing garments properly and learning more about history. My way of thinking and creating related more to costume design, so I’m pursuing a costume course soon, which covers many elements I’m interested in, extends on areas I explored during my project research and will teach me more specific skills. It will be challenging, but hopefully more fulfilling x

How strange that only today I found your video, yet I have been following you for few months. Thank you for sharing your story. I have 10 yrs experience working in corporate world and always struggled to settle down as I felt something is missing. I am like you have passion for creativity. I tried every single handcraft/art you can imagine, but never kept with one for a long time although I was gifted in many of them. I quit my job 6 months ago and since then trying to find out what really I want to do. Then I started on web designing and found out graphic design is so interesting and loved it. Today I started giving up and made decision to go back to work as financially I can't go on any more. Then I found your video as a message from the universe through your story telling me "NOT TO GIVE UP". Thank you again and wish you all the best in your life.

Cecila Marshella: I hope you will find the courage to pursue your dream but if that's not possible, a Dermatologist is a skin doctor. Perhaps that could be a way into makeup and skincare. And, as I think about it, an educated Dermatologist with a passion for makeup and skincare could be the perfect mix for an incredible makeup and skincare line! I will look for the Dr. Cecelia Marshella line in a few years and will rush to try it. Sending courage vibes your way...

This whole pressure created by parents is really bad. I’ve been there, I am there. This year I’m taking the exam for med school and if I fail I’m going to an art school. Now my plan is not to fail obviously, but to give everything I can as medicine is something I’m really interested in but it’s not comparable to living a dream of becoming an artist. They don’t have a narrow mind, those parents but they have a different way of thinking for example giving you reasons not to take part in the makeup industry because so many have failed. It is waaaay better to fail and to blame yourself for that than to live with a regret that you just pleased somebody else. It is good to listen to others and to get feedback but if you feel like there’s an opposition between what you are doing and your true self is time to change paths. Wish you the best in making your decision and don’t let ANYBODY alter it. I’m certainly not going to be pissed if I fail that exam

I'm an artist and my home tends to be messy, but I am actively teaching myself how to make it orderly, because I remembered how stressful it was on me as a kid when my dad's house wasn't clean. It can be very hard on kids trying to grow up and do well in school and their social lives when they can't bring friends over because the house is such a mess.

Thank you so much for sharing your story. It has reminded me of what and where I want to be. like an old song you hear again after much time, it struck an emotional place and I'm so very glad I found it. I have been subscribed to your channel since I started researching France as a country I have desperately wanted to visit. I escaped domestic violence in 2012 after a 12 year marriage. Most abuse wasn't even known until I had the proper counseling amd teaching. At the end it was leave or die. Literally. My sons were 7 & 8 at the time. My oldest son and I moved over 29 times in 4 years. It was in large part to being chased or when ever we were finally settled something horrible would happen and we would have to leave again for our safety. During this "survival" it was the pure will to survive and desperation to be happy that kept us alive. Many days and nights were very difficult. We lived in my car, in rented rooms, in a hotel in places we have agreed not to even discuss again. I worked the entire time And my son changed 6 schools. The situation itself let in another type of abusive people. Bad bosses, bad roommates etc. We needed to be safe and finally an opening after 5 years of searching, in a small domestic violence house happened and the deconstruction of our entire selves began. When we moved out of state it was apparent that is where we were happiest. We were far away from the bad memories and no one bothered to chase us that far. We were also protected. The adjustment was very hard, but within that journey we learned our strengths, discovered new ones, built more positive relationships and learned with proper guidance and counseling how to identify toxic ones and toxic people from a mile away. When my son and I talk about where we are now, if there is a bad day or a threatening situation (for example we have had a cancer scare concerning his lymph nodes), with relief and half smiles we always say "Look at whatever have survived. Nothing can break us as long as we are together" ❤. When you are finally safe and happy, a cloud does begin to form a little. The same questions, "What is the next step? Is this the right place? Am I doing enough?" haunt your mind as a mother and as a woman of survival. That is where I have been for 6 months. I have been having deep soul wrenching discussions with myself. Mostly about leaving my own country and our family behind to grow somewhere else. I may not have found the answer within myself yet, but I heard a whisper inside when I listened to your story. "If we can survive that, we can do anything." Words I have desperately needed to tell myself. if this comment finds you, Thank You. Thank you for that whisper. If this comment finds anyone else who is in a bad place, or an abusive one- You can and you will and you will be happier than you ever have dreamed of. So.etimes we have to leave the "mental" safety of friends and family to do so. You will discover in your growth it is their life they are speaking from. No one can speak from yours or your experiences. I find genuine passion and care when I see this video. I see the struggle in your tone and tour strength in your smile. That tells me yes it will be hard but oh is it worth it. Thank you, for sharing your story and your passion. Its working. :) Kimberly

Thanks for sharing your very interesting story of your career! I studied at Parsons as well, but before that I studied at Traphagen School of Fashion , the oldest fashion school in the USA in the 1960s and 70s when I was in my 20s. Unfortunately, it's no longer in existence so kids who want to study fashion here in NYC either go to Parsons or F.I.T. When it closed down in the 1990s I think they gave all their books and fashions and lace collars from the 1600s we had to illustrate to F.I.T. Traphagen was established in 1928 and was in the theater district of NYC! It looked a bit like the school in Harry Potter movies but not as big of course and had life drawing classes held in big studios with huge skylights like the ateliers of Paris! One of my favorite assignments was walking up and down 5th Ave. sketching all the fashions and accessories in all the well known dept store windows and then write about it! I studied the history of costume from ancient Greece to the 1960s! The time of Twiggy and Jean Shrimpton, the top models of the time as well as Verushka! I went on to do fashion illustration for Vogue-Butterick and Simplicity, both pattern companies and buying offices in NYC. The only thing I wished the school had done even Parsons at the time was teach business courses and marketing but it was way easier to get hired back in the day! All I had to do was open my portfolio and I got the job because of my education and later on because of the job experiences. I've since taken some marketing courses which the art schools today in America are now teaching and have my own art business. Keep up the great informative videos...the best I've seen on fashion on RU-vid thus far! Merci!

I can't stop watching your videos! They are very interesting and engaging. You really have courage to make such a sharp transition. I feel at a dead end unable to make the change I need in my career. I don't feel bored at work, it's more the feeling that 80% of the tasks in my job make no sense, are combersome or serve no valid purpose at all. I work with artists and I don't always appreciate the pure dreams of art either. I don't want to get into a higher position and I feel like I don't even truly want to lear more about the field I'm in because it all sounds like more and more bad news. I tried going back to school and that didn't work out in the end. Now I feel extremely tired and disconnected. I feel stuck in the risk of not making any changes while feeling the urgency to make changes now. I agree about learning something new every few years. When I took online courses while working, I was so much more motivated in my job! That drive seemed to spill over to other activities.

I also have changed careers, but from fashion design custom to business to teaching fashion and design to 12 year olds which I love. Having a salary as opposed to chasing up money when you have a family is great and teaching gives you school holidays with your family- we have teens who represent their country in a sport which is also my passion. Great advice to people take a chance to find what you love to do - then find a way to make it work .

Justine, I am going through this right now (what a comfort to hear this talk -- thank you!) and I have also explored choices/experiences in my life through the courage of pursuing my interests (at least when I was younger). I am a technical writer, but when I was a child, I mostly spent time outdoors with animals or writing stories and drawing fashion designs. I'm also a lifelong musician. I crave the ability to be more creative and I've found this difficult in the business environment (or in IT). You are helping me learn how to draw fashion designs from some of your past tutorials, and while many around me here in America don't understand why I quit my job or am seeking a career change currently, I find your story here soooo comforting. Your advice is spot on (and relevant to the kind of world that is emerging, too). As selfish as it sounds, I am terribly glad you are doing exactly what you are doing right now. You're the best thing I've discovered on here lately. Thank you! I look forward to all your videos to come this year. XOXO

Hi Justine, I see this video was from 3 years ago but it came up when I opened RU-vid today. I'm a huge fan of yours. Loved this video and your candor. I have wrestled with a career change desire for a long time. About 6 years ago I had an epiphany and actually said out loud how i had a "double life ", the long term career in nutrition and public health but the need to exert my love of art history, photography, and writing. I also NEED creativity in my life on a daily basis. When I managed to express these feelings out loud I got positive feedback. I have some experience in each of the areas I mention, but I'm kind of spinning my wheels in figuring out where to go from here, which direction. Your video was quite inspiring. I am all for big changes , too. Thanks for all of your great videos, and congratulations to you on your fashion career.😊😊😊

Your story is so amazing. It took a lot of courage to follow your dreams and passions and I'm so happy that you did. I decided that I wanted to find a way to write for a living, right after finishing my master's degree in Forensic Psychology, so I have a tiny bit of experience with making (a much smaller) leap towards your passions. However, I feel I'm in need of a change and your video motivated me even more to find what's missing and get it. Thank you for being you! xoxo

You articulate the experience of career path change so well. I also had a masters degree in Something else - Computer Science. It was great.The major is now called Fashion Business Management. Classes are really geared towards a real world job - retail math, textiles,product development, marketing. They also really help with an internship experience. The professional studies classes ( very little $) for post graduate are also really great, I have taken Technical Design and Illustrator and learned so much!

I found one of your videos randomly on RU-vid. I am not into fashion or anything like that, but I was totally hooked haha. I like the way you speak in a constructive manner about everything. This video is really great for people who want to start a business but hesitating to do so. I also started my own tech consultancy 6 months ago, 2 years after collage and worked in couple of startups. I haven't generated the "average" income for a programmer yet but I love it! I got to be creative with what I build, where I work and how I work. It's priceless. :+1:

With all the you tube chanels' i have come across ( which wont be many but still) i find yours a perfect one. The reason is that u would not try to fit in or potray like someone rather have your own style and inspire genuinely. I find all the vedios as wholesome. Especially this vedio reminds me of how my carrer process changed from my gut feeling of becoming a journalist to now being an Architect planner. Although i like this field but i still want to keep my writing alive. I wish i could meet you at some point in life and have a fruitful discussions like about fashion.. art.. Architecture.. cultural diversity.. life in different cities... And more about creative fields. I like the way u inspire. Keep up the good work. :)

Justine. Thank you so much for this video for your channel and most importantly for delivering your light into the world. Like you, I decided to leave my successful career in marketing and communications two years ago to pursue textile/surface pattern design. There are times when I think I'm foolish for starting something so completely new and incurring school debt--again. But it's inside me to express myself in this way. Its what my heart and soul wants and even in my most nagging, critical moments I find the universe sends me signs of encouragement that I am doing the right thing for me by following my heart and listening to my instincts. It's how I found you--the bright, inspiring soul whose story is very similar to mine and who will know continue to be a source of encouragement for me as I continue my studies and create a new life for myself. Thank you, bless you, and keep going!

Hi everyone , i also followed a zig zag trajectory. I was a flight attendant for 10 years. When I was still flying I got a scholarship to study fashion, then I quit my job and started as a fashion designer. Years go by, I am bored of my job, I don’t grow, I go back to school and I get a business degree and then an mba. Still lost, I get passionate about sustainability, I do a post grad course in sustainable development and resource management. I tried to get into that field but they wouldn’t hire people in their 40’s at minimum pay so I reinvented myself as a consulting fashion designer with expertise in sustainable fashion. My point is that it’s a struggle but you should always enrich your knowledge and try to combine what you are good at with what the market requests, while doing what you like. And do not give up because you are never too old.

Hi Justine, I recently discovered you on RU-vid and I think close by now i've watched all of your videos. I absolutely love them! You are really knowledgeable and give great fashion advise! I originally came across your videos when I was doing some research for a marketing class that i'm in, but got distracted when I saw you made a video on wardrobe capsules, as I'm currently in the process of cleaning out my closet and gradually starting a fresh new look. Anyways, like you, I am in the process of changing my career path and I am a little scared, but feel confident that I will be great at what I want to do for a career. I found your story inspirational and will remember it through my journey. Thank you, Samantha

my path was even more complicated, both my parents are physicians scientists. I always loved the arts bc since I was a child I was in dance class: ballet and folkloric. I also loved to sing. when I grew up I got into university in international business bc I wanted to travel, but I was still in the dance group in uni. then I quit after one semester and moved from Mexico City to NYC as well. then I registered in university here, I wanted to be a journalist but my English was great but not my English writing, so I got into the fashion merchandising program and I loved it. specially the creating visuals class. then I moved on to every major they had at FIT: from fabric styling to production, to marketing finally I graduated in international trade and marketing for fashion industries, but realized I didn't want to work corporate. I had never worked corporate and I never wanted to do so I came back and did the styling continuing education program, and I loved it. so I freelance now as a stylist mainly for advertising and film. and I still dance ballet. so I work in a dance company in nyc and as a stylist as well. but now I really want to be a journalist so I can write dance reviews, critique, and fashion, and politics too, because I do much activism. so my plan is to go to London and take a journalism intensive at St. Martins. :)

Hi Juntine, I have only found you and I love your channel. I love this one in particular. I did Business Studies and Accounting in University, travelled, got married and had kids. Then I was missing something. I love accounting and my work but I knew I had something more. I, like you, have a family backround in art. I have 2 sisters and my Mum who are interior designers and are amazing at sewing and creating things. 3 years ago I returned to study Image Consulting and I love it, I know it's my creative side coming out in me. I love your informative videos and you cover all those basic little things that me and you think everyone already knows but they don't and no matter what, we can always learn something new when we do research a topic we think we know. You are inspiring me and I really think the You Tube channel is an easy way to inspire people. I am originally from Ireland so I am obsessed with all European fashion. I now live in the middle of Australia in a small town with a population of 80 people. Clothes shops are 700kms away from me but this does not stop me trying to inspire and style. Thank you for your channel and I look forward to watching you from Birdsville, Queensland, Australia. Cheers Olivia
