My carp rig setup using a spring feeder bolt rig. There are many rig options for carp fishing, but this is the rig I use 99% of the time. A mix of Euro and American carp fishing styles. A simple carp rig that can be great for beginners learning how to catch carp, or experienced carp fishermen as well.

I used this setup and a #4 or #6 Owner or Gamakatsu hooks with a soured corn pack bait. I caught loads of 3 to 8 pound channel catfish. Instead of the split-shot, I used a small bead and a silicone stop. I made my own spring feeders from 1/16th inch stainless steel tig wire and hollow plastic sucker sticks. I put 4 pieces of soured whole-kernel sweet corn on the hair rig. The soured corn seems to deter most carp, but the channel catfish love it. The carp that would bite it averaged 10 pounds. This provided me with many good catfish fries and a nice freezer full of catfish nuggets for the winter. Thanks for the information. 👍

Glad I found a no nonsense channel for affordable and easy to find rigs for carp! I’m new to carp fishing. I’ve been using a bait holder spring off of those catfish treble hooks at Walmart, and they kinda work. But I’m sure I could find a better spring than that at a hardware store! Haha Probably will end up ordering those bait holders off eBay before too long

I use the inline lead type method feeders that are cut in. It does help for sure to have a smaller leader because it'll sometimes fly up and get caught in the fins. But what I do is I do tuck the hook in the pack bait but I do it on the thinnest side so the heaviest side of the pack Bait ( cuz I could see the lead) will typically hit the bottom first keeping my hook bait on the top since it's the thinnest part. And so far that's worked pretty good. I still get some tangles when nuisance fish are touching it or I'm in a lot of weed which I fish quite a bit. But that's helped me out

Hey Tom, living in the Netherlands, I have been fishing for carp since the last century. Especially the English method with boilies. But here on the big river I haven't been catching carp with boilies for years and that's why I started trying the American way with pack bait. Now I do catch carp with that, although they are not big so far. I also use your system with spring feeder and short leader. With plastic corn on the hook I also catch bream and roach here, but I am happy to be able to catch carp again here on the river. Your videos help me master this way of fishing. I now explain the way of fishing to a friend and try to draw others' attention to this way of fishing. Thanks Tom and tight lines!

We use a bolt rig up here in pa. Hook 6" line to swivel. Then another 6" piece of line that we slide a 1oz no roll flat sinker on to another swivel.. main line to this swivel. We ball The pack bait around sinker.carp picks up bait an starts to swim off . Sinker hits main line swivel .which scares the carp. And he's off to the races with your hook in his mouth.im sure you already done this. Just Thought I would mention it. nice work on this video tom
@OutsidewithTom
@OutsidewithTom 2 года назад
Nice, very similar to my rig. Sometimes I'll switch out the spring feeder for a 2oz no roll sinker and pack the bait on the sinker. Bait doesn't stay on as good, but works fine for shorter casting. Helps when nuisance fish are pecking at my hook bait and getting the hook tangled in the spring.

As a carp angler for over 20 years in the UK, its nice to see care taken to ensure the well being of the carp. I see so many Americans hating on them and in alot of cases rightfully so. However in certain places they should be protected and released in a way they can grow and get bigger for the next time you may catch them. The rig is well put together, everything for a reason. A point on the hooks, in my opinion you got it spot on, the sharpness is more important than anything but size, colour and shape and barb do play a part in a smaller way. We are only allowed barbless hooks where I fish so we don't leave huge holes in their mouths when you get the hook out. Every angler I know uses different rigs and components but the foundations are pretty much the same. Each to their own, do what makes you confident.

@@slipalongtobascus99 Well said. A lot of videos I see tend to entirely skip over all the thought and preparation that goes into fishing, all of which are the very things that make the catching possible.

Slipalong, unfortunately some authorities are, at least in part, responsible for the mistreatment. In California, Carp are labeled "invasive". In a municipal lake that I have started to fish there was a government sponsored carp kill program over the past couple of years because the carp population was too robust, and allegedly damaged the fishery. I have seen bow fisherman brag of killing upwards of 80 in a day. Such official positions also foster a culture of no respect among casual fishermen everywhere. Then, of course, there are the ordinary fools that have no respect for any fish species, and for little else.

Great stuff Tom. An Octogenarian here, trying to figure out carp because the kayak is a little bit much since my 86the birthday. Sitting in an easy chair and catching impressive fish is now appealing. Well, enough. Love your videos. Very informative and your presentation style is pleasant and easy to follow. Looks like you have simplified what often seems to be an over complicated process. I have watched a plethora of videos (and that is a lot of confusions) about the best this and that. One was particularly useful. I had ordered spring feeders, although I wasn't sure that they were not junk until I saw this video, and I am about to cancel the order on my $8 method feeders that take weeks to get here. (In all of the videos I don't think I have ever seen spring feeders mentioned.) One question. What knot do you use to keep the braid from slipping on the hair loop if I may ask. Assuming a palomar know to the swivel.
@OutsidewithTom
@OutsidewithTom 2 года назад
Lol, I had to look up what Octogenarian means. Added a new word to my vocab today, thanks!😀 Glad you enjoy the videos. For the hair loop, I just double the line over itself and tie an overhand knot to make the loop. The hair loop doesn't ever get much tension on it, so a simple overhand knot works fine. For the main line to swivel, I use a clinch knot. Thanks for watching!
@57tubeviewer
@57tubeviewer 2 года назад
Thanks for te response Tom. LOL. I may have sent multiple comments because I did not see them posted on You Tube and it looks like you responded to my first effort. I went ahead and did a braided hair rig, and used a triple surgeon's knot at the swivel; and a figure 8 loop on the hair loop. Octogenarian is a nice word for "damn old".

@@OutsidewithTom One more time Tom. So glad I found your site. The information you are putting out seems to be unique and valuable. For instance. I had no idea after watching multiple how-to fix bait videos that you did not need bucket(s), and the stuff all over your hands and surroundings. I was just a tad skeptical of the plastic bag mixing method, since it was so different from everything else I had seen, but it clearly worked for you. Would it work for me? I did a test run on your basic sweet corn/oats recipe and it really worked. So, I tried it on a Masa base which seems to be a favorite in SoCal; and that turned out great. I already mentioned that no where had I seen the Spring feeder (approx $1 a pop) instead of the method feeder at approx $8, or method leads. Did not know there was such a thing until I watched your rigging video. Good stuff. Finally, I wonder why the experts still talk about all of the little gadgets to secure a braid hair rig, when your method makes so much sense. I feel much better equipped after viewing just a few of your videos. Next will be cork based floating boilies. I am all-in with your methods. All I need now is to catch my first Carp. Maybe Monday. PS In my first couple of ventures, I found that Carp fisherman were universally friendly and helpful. Last week I met a couple of Vietnamese refugee brothers who showered me with information (Masa pack bait recipe/ shrimp for freshwater stripers--who knew?) and insisted I take some of their shrimp, which did indeed work immediately, and held off the skunk.

@@57tubeviewer Glad you are finding the videos useful! My channel name has a double meaning, as I really am an "outside" the box kind of guy in many areas of my life, including fishing. I don't bother thawing them out at all. I don't carry them in a cooler or anything, just in my tackle bag. Usually by the time I get to the spot and get set up (20-30min) they're partially thawed. I'll put them on the hair rig while still partially frozen and let them thaw in the water.

Glad to hear you repeating in your video the importance of hook sharpness. I have been carp fishing for over thirty years and would say that is the number one reason for missed bites, pickups. Get to a water people already fishing you ask how is it going, there answer well a bit bit patchy, fish playing with the bait you know a bit shy today. Set up in the next swim, cast out, same bait (corn) new hook, thirty minutes later fish on the bank. After the second fish change hook, keep catching, they are convinced you are using a miracle bait no just sharp hooks. Took me a while in my younger days to work it out though.

Well I tried the spring feeder rig Saturday night. After my first cast and reeling it back in. The hook was tangled inside the feeder. So I cut it off and just went back to my other rig. I’m sure it mostly operator error. Any tips Just to review 1 bobber stop, 1 bead, 1 ounce egg sinker, feeder and swivel on end with 2 inch hair rig
@OutsidewithTom
@OutsidewithTom 3 года назад
Sorry to hear that. I my experience, there are only 2 reasons why that can happen. 1. Your pack bait all fell off the feeder as soon as the rig hit the water, exposing the spring and allowing the hook to get into it. If that's the case, maybe pack your bait on tighter. If the feeder is full of bait when it lands on the bottom, the hook can't get in there. 2. Small fish have been pecking at your rig. Bluegills, sunfish, bass are the main offenders in my area. They will gobble up your pack bait and mess with your hook bait, creating a tangle like you describe. Usually I will see little pecks and line twitches when this his happening, but not always. Really the only thing you can do in this case is to cast your bait in a different spot to get away from those nuisance fish. Also, keeping some tension on the line while your bait is sinking helps the rig land better on the bottom. I'm curious, what is the rig you normally use?

I've never tested, maybe I'll do that one day and make a video. My main concern is having it tight enough so it won't come apart when it impacts the water.

I’ll just make your oats recipe and test the break down I don’t think mine broke apart at the water impact. But it breaks pretty quick

If I had to guess The break is probably 5 mins or even maybe longer with your recipe My oats regular recipe is half of tube of old fashions 1/2 can of cream and flavor etc

When I fish for Carp I always try and cover all metal parts in my rig. I used to fish with a lot simpler method, and hands down by covering all the metal parts I have caught tons more Carp. I know Carp are sensitive and skittish so I assumed that this might be the reason for catching more. Have you ever noticed anything like that Tom?

I'm kind of skeptical on whether camouflaging the rig makes a difference. People catch carp on neon pink hook baits that look completely unnatural on the lake bottom. If that doesn't scare them away, then I doubt a swivel or method feeder will. That said, I do ensure none of my rig components are shiny. Black hook, black swivel, and I rough up the sinkers so they aren't shiny. It makes me feel confident in my rig, which is the most important thing. If it makes you feel good about your fishing, then keep doing it. It certainly can't hurt anything.

@@OutsidewithTom I was told years ago that Carp can sense/taste the metal. I'm not sure if there is any truth to that but I know the way I rig up has caught me a ton more Carp. I use a lot of black so it's not shinny as well. I also switched to an inward facing shank on the hook noticed better hook ups and better placement on the hook. Thanks for all the videos and conversations.

@@johnnystephenson6908 Ahh ok, I misunderstood. I've never heard of the idea that they could sense the metal. Not sure about that. I mean, they do suck the metal hook into their mouth, so I don't know. I'd be interested in seeing what your rig looks like. @@OutsidewithTom Oh thanks, looks pretty cool, but I think more than I want to spend. At least at the moment. I thought it might be some kind of construction or auto tubing I was unfamiliar with that I could get scraps of for pennies somewhere. I will put it on my wish list though, might get a couple when I go back to work. Thanks.

@@weedeater64 I used to use a chunk of pool noodle foam, worked pretty good too.
