Looks good. I sell central vac's for a living. When it comes to application like yours (or vet clinics / barber shops) I like to sell a cyclonic separator (Vacu-Maid sells one) before the dirt enters the canister. It just protects your central vacuum from coming in contact with fine woodworking dust because the separator captures 97 percent of the dust you suck up. If you are on top of your maintenance you should be fine though.

Doug and Ashley, if you leave that orange tube the length of is, you can also use it to clean your workshop on wheels. The hand tools that came with the hose will work great for the stuff that is left over and general dust that naturally comes in when you're working in it. This portable workshop is absolutely fantastic. A+ on your part for building it. I can imagine several craftsmen copying this as this would make getting to and leaving a jobsite much easier and faster.

Well of course this was a brilliant idea! I appreciate how Doug and Ashley think outside the box and make it work for them. Having to empty the system frequently isn't a bit deal and the sawdust is beneficial for helping with mud, composting, possibly in a Woodstock, etc. Such a sharp idea!

My dad DIYd his own vacuum system in his workshop. Running the pipe similar to yours but he used a shop vac outside the shop and that went into a plastic barrel with a large bag inside it. Once the bag was full he’d take it out and give it to people for mulch or chicken bedding or horse bedding.

Awesome little workshop. About dust collection, maybe you want to check the static generated by suction in pvc pipes, with the sawdust may be a security issue. In some videos of another people, I saw they put a grounded copper wire all along the pipe to reduce that static. I love your videos and I enjoy a lot all your great work, this new home will be great for sure.

Since you are a DIYer and not a contractor, electrician or HVAC expert, things do not have to be done only one way. Up to code yes, but you always throughly and diligently look into that for each area you have lived. This gives you the freedom to think outside the box, which you are an expert at, a n d adapt what is needed to meet your particular need at the time. This has served you very well! It always is interesting to me to watch TV shows or videos of renovation or building something. So keep up the good work Doug!

Good ideal. It will work fine. My motorhome had a built-in system and I never had a problem with all the sand and dirt and pet hair. As long as you empty the vacuum and clean the filter it will last a long time. 👍🙂 Well after watching the whole video. Maybe you could get a drum the same size as the vac. And adapt it to fit with that. So holding capacity is bigger. Just a thought. 👍

I am kinda jealous of all the wood chips you are going to have. We left a large pile of wood chips for about 1.5 years and ended up with the nicest soil amendment. Happy accident. Thanks Bob. Since we have no soil to speak of here ( bedrock) this is huge for gardening especially with the fertilizer shortage. Very nice adaptation. Going to mention this to my wood working son-in-law. He has a much larger space, but maybe it will work.

If you add more tools along the trailer, replace the switch with a pull chain style one back towards the vacuum, and then run a string along the center of the trailer from front to back, kinda like a stop request on public bus, can just reach up and grab it without looking :)

Great job Doug!!!

Looking great. Maybe put one port on the floor, in a corner. that way you can just sweep all the leftover debris in to a foot wide funnel on the floor, that leads into the vacuum pipe. Those are very convinient imo. Just remember to have the gate higher up so you dont't need to do a deep squat every time you wanna sweep the floor.

I believe that you have thought about most issues, and it is great that you are taking care to protect yourself and the family from risks. However, everyone needs to please take care dealing with all workshop dust. Even metal swarf and dust can cause fires or explosions. It is an explosive! Someone mentioned the risk of static charges, they are not a trivial issue and can be the source of ignition that the dust air mix is seeking to go bang. Any finely distributed dust mixed with the air can cause a destructive explosion, and many workshops have been destroyed. Yes, with loss of life when the system fails, is not maintained, or not installed in the first place. Flour mills are well known for his issue, but other workshops suffer. Dust is insidious, damaging lungs when not blowing things up. Some materials can also cause other troubles, with fine particles, and the glues and preservatives used in manufactured goods, being unsafe to health.
@mrsdig57
@mrsdig57 2 года назад
Would it be safer for him to ground the vacuum system so there wouldn't be static? I worked for a company that made plastic facia bumpers to hide the macanics when building a car. We had to ground everything in the building.
@diyfferent
@diyfferent 2 года назад
I've researched the topic and found the danger to be greatly exaggerated. It's truly a non-issue for an average wood-shop. There have been no fires or explosions from PVC dust collection systems. It's just one of those myths that floats around.

@ronporter610
@ronporter610 2 года назад
well done, I would tape the joints that you didn't glue just to ensure no suction is being lost at the joints. To bad the bottom of the vacuum isn't a clear plastic so you could see how full it is.
@ep61611
@ep61611 2 года назад
The ends that you didn't have a need for, you should have a need for. A length of hose would make an excellent hand-held vacuum to clean up the loose stuff that didn't get picked up by the main unit. Plug it onto the system at any inlet and use it to vacuum the surfaces of your tools AND the floor.

There are a few people concerned about static charges. It can be an issue. Stumpy Nubs did an entire video about how he added wire to the duct work. One person suggested grounding the vac unit. I'm sure it is already grounded. The problem is when saw dust and particles are flowing in the plastic pipe, it creates static electricity. So, the pipe should be grounded. Looks like a great system for a small shop. Very ingenious. I recently added a wireless 240 volt lighting contactor to operate my dust collector remotely. The contactor with 2 remotes, mounting box, fittings and by-pass switch (optional) was $45. A dedicated "dust collector remote switch" with 1 remote is $130. Congrats.

Possible free chicken bedding! I know you did the chicken thing! My wife and I have chickens but we only have two hens and a rooster we acquired some fertile eggs from a neighbour but plan to keep a total of maybe five hens and the rooster hatching out a couple dozen to sell each year and have enough eggs to furnish ourselves. I have a sawmill so we have our own source for bedding. I cut cedar and I heard it was good for keeping mites and other pests at bay as they don't like the cedar.
