My Cheap 69 Chevelle SS 396 Muncie Transmission Blew Up! Let's see What Happened!

Flexplate = automatic. Flywheel = manual

This may help you to under stand,, The early 168 teeth flywheels had a bolt pattern for a 10in clutch. The 10in clutch has now been replaced with a 10 1/2in (or if you prefer, 10.4in) clutch which used the SAME bolt pattern for the pressure plate. The FIRST Chevy V8 flywheels were all the 168 teeth version up through 1962. Then in 63, the smaller 153 teeth flywheel was introduced. Those flywheels ONLY USED the 10 1/2in clutch. MOST of the early 168 teeth flywheels had the bolt pattern for a 10 or 10 1/2in clutch. But, some of the early 168 teeth flywheels (police, taxi, HD, truck, etc) did have a bolt pattern for an 11in clutch. So, here is where I'm going with all of this. Just because a flywheel is the 168 teeth version, IT MUST HAVE THE CORRECT BOLT PATTERN in order to use an 11in clutch!!! Beginning ABOUT 1962-63, MOST 168 teeth flywheels did have the bolt pattern for an 11in clutch. Now, here is one more variation of the 168 teeth flywheel. SOME of them had a dual bolt pattern which permitted either an 11in or a 10 1/2in pressure plate to be bolted to the flywheel. But those were usually service replacement flywheels. And, since the 12in clutch was mentioned, it also was used with the 168 teeth flywheel. BOTH 11in and 12in clutches used the same bolt pattern on a 168 teeth flywheel. FROM THE FACTORY, the only 12in clutches used in Chevrolets was truck applications, such as 1ton and larger. The 12in truck clutches required a different bell housing to accomodate the larger diameter of the 12in pressure plate. There are AFTERMARKET 12in pressure plates that WILL FIT inside the stock pass car bell housing, such as the 621 housing. Below is a 153 and 168 teeth flywheel. The 168 teeth flywheel has the bolt holes near the edge of the flywheel. This is the bolt pattern necessary for an 11in clutch (or 12in).

The stickers are a good buy! I replaced all the stickers on an old Dodge along with paint, etc, and they really made a difference.

Randy synchros are made out of brass and yes they should have teeth all the way around when they disintegrate they fall to the bottom of the oil and don't cause any glitter in like metal so it's a simple rebuild

I am a big believer in always change the clutch when you have the tranny out. Saw a guy who had his 427 engine rebuilt, engine out, tranny out, complete rebuild. Clutch was about half worn if that and he decided it was OK. A year later, or a little less and engine barely broke in, clutch went bad. Car sat for the next 16 years when finally someone offered to come and fix it for him. He himself could not do it himself. I shouldn't even need to mention what happens to a car made in the 60's that sits for 16 years. Just a word for the wise.

GM had a 10 1/2 inch clutch and an 11 inch clutch. You took out an 11 inch clutch setup and bought everything for a 10.5 inch clutch. Those original GM 11 inch clutch bellhousings are becoming very hard to find. Stick with the 11 inch setup, you'll be happier in the long run.

Good luck with that Holley injection system, I had nothing but trouble with mine. Went back to original carb. System.

Randy it’s called a fly wheel flex plate or for automatic transmission flywheels are for standard transmission

Oh yes, the flywheel for an 11 inch clutch weighs as much as the trans, There is no flex plate on a standard trans but the flywheel has a ring gear heated and shrunk on it. It is replaceable also. You would do well to watch the video on rebuilding a Muncy on RU-vid. The brass rings inside the trans are Synchronizer rings or syncro's and most likely need replacing, The slider gears are suppose to be loose and there are 3 locking plates under the slider gears. You will need lots of bearings and thrust washers. nothing wrong with your shift forks. Be careful with the pilot bearing there are many different sizes for different crankshafts. Some automatic crankshafts had different size holes while most standard cranks all had the same size. Dorman sells at least 3 different size. Good Luck.

Back in the day we would lay in the driveway and pull these transmissions out on hour chest with out a jack

You blew up a Muncie? That's a feat considering the power output of that old 396... Those things are practically indestructible! Fwiw those things are a flywheel and pilot bearing.

Those Muncie 4 speeds are pretty easy to work on you don't really need special tools get new syncros the brass rings New bearings get a manual easy to fix

That brass bushing is called pilot bushing, it's factory stock. Have you got any automotive dictionaries? That have pictures with names.

Great content Randy on how to rebuild one of my favorite transmission good old Muncie 4 speed problem here tho is company u bought rebuild parts for sent stuff for either 305 or 350 but needit parts 396 big block mannn that sucks not right u could re-use bell housing just put new clutch plate & flywheel together. It's good to have know how guy like Santa great teacher.

GET your flywheel resurfaced, get a good 11" clutch and pp, and throw out bearing, your old trans needs torque lock sliders, that will cure your popping out of gear problem

I hope you have the trans' you took out rebuilt. I personally think it just needs the first gear synchronizer replaced, and I'd replace the linkage parts that seem worn like the one fork you think has wear on it. If anything else you can have the parts it needs replaced and sell it to recoup some of your money.

Should have adjuster shift rods first to make sure it was adjuster right.

Change the synchronizers and the shift forks, and you'll be back in business. I've rebuilt several M-20s, M-21s, and M-22s over the years. Parts are available.

chevy offered 2 size's some small blocks like the 1969 z28 302 and some others used a 11' clutch the reg cars used a 10.5" clutch all big blocks used 11' and some big trucks 13"

Your synchronizer Rings will cause it to jump out of gear if you replace the brass synchronizers rings that should solve your issue

Those brass synchro rings could be cracked.You cant always tell by looking at them without taking them out.They could be expanding and the sleeve wont ride over them.I used to grind every other tooth of them.It makes it easier to shift.But it could jump in gear if your towing the car.

Does the starter bolt to the block or the bell housing? That would be a game changer but by now you've figured it out.

All of the parts for your clutch assembly is for a small block. I would have just rebuilt everything that you took off of your car. That way you know it is yours. 😎😎

You have to examine the Syncro's and the gears themselves. if they are worn and rounded (IE the little pointed things on the edges of the gears. I cant see inside well enough to get a good look at them.

two diffferent size clutches 10.5 and 11" if I remember correct. and trans M21 and M22 are different sizes.. both should work by changing the trans Yoke on driveshaft. flywheel 2 sizes and starters match..

I use to always wonder why they called it a bearing when they look more like a bushing. But I think some are actual bearings.

You laugh at muffler bearings and I did also until I went to work for Volvo truck. There actually is what they call a muffler bearing holding the stack.

I think what you got was for a small block chevy.
