My Cheap Chevy SSR was Hiding a Deadly Issue - Bad Mechanics to Blame!!

I'm honestly shocked at the incompetent work done to this car. The mechanic who worked on this should never be allowed to work on cars again. This was extremely dangerous, and could have killed someone.

We bought our Corolla from a guy who'd 'rebuilt' the suspension had to buy a part at O'Reilly's to get the castle nut that was 'missing' after the test drive. It was clunking after a few months and we took it to our mechanic (who does sell cars occasionally). Our mechanic who is Hispanic came out to my wife white as a sheet, asked her sheepishly "We didn't sell you this car, did we?" She answered "No." He breathed a sigh of relief, told her ALL of the bolts were loose. Charged her $80 for the labor to make it roadworthy again.

Not necessarily because the Toyota Prius is one of the most common catalytic converter stolen. Very low car to the ground but they steal them because they typically contain more of the precious metals that a lot of other converters do. There was a story recently where a guy was killed stealing a catalytic converter off of a Toyota Prius. He had the car precariously jacked up and as he was cutting out the converter, the car fell on him and killed him. So so sad. If you can’t sense the sarcasm with that last sentence, it’s definitely there. Anyways the office workers came to work the next morning and found the body laying under the car. Again, so so sad

I have a 2004 SSR, looks exactly like yours. Usually the tires get old before they wear out. I had to get new tires in 2022, $1,800 Pirelli's, Gulp. The frame is a factory shortened Trailblazer EXT frame (-13"). The battery is not that hard to change. 13:00 that is for an Oris hitch, that style is common in Europe. You need a ABS heat shield. Simple Engineering sells aftermarket parts. Never open or close the hood touching the silver strip on the hood, it's plastic and it will break.

So many bad mechanics man. Same thing happened to my pride and joy recently, I have a Golf Mk3 and I took it to the mechanic recently to have it checked out cause it was rattling and stuff and he first took it for an absolute joyride with me in the passenger seat and called me 1hr later to tell me he noted everything down whats wrong and that he isn't gonna be able to work on the car for up to a months time... Then I told him about the fluids I wanted to put in the car and he kept saying I dont need to and that its the same thing, said climate was also not working properly cause its an old car and so on. Thank GOD I found some good guys after him and some days who complimented the car for what it is and gave me props for keeping it mint and are willing to work on it properly with me ordering all the parts and them just fitting them on including fluids. Always remember not to trust ANY mechanic more than yourself in terms of fixing things if you can or changing out simple things.

Those two cat's are CARB compliant, the D798-7 refers to the CARB executive order, at the auto parts stores, they sell for $870 a piece. The 912006 is the part number from AP Exhaust, you can get them for about $350-400 a piece online. AP Exhaust is one of our vendors. (I work at O'Reilly) We either sell Magnaflow, or we have access to AP Exhaust (The manufacturer of those converters!) @Auto Auction Rebuilds. However, the 912006 is applicable ONLY for the 2003 model year of the SSR!

I would blame the loose bolts and missing bolt on the dealers service department. Line Mechanics are under duress daily to knock out replacing parts. The Service Managers are xxxholes. I had my 2004 F150's power steering pump replaced at the dealer. Sure enough the two bolts that hold it on were both loose!!!!!!!! Your logic doesn't make sense as far as not blaming the dealer, just my opinion. The time you took to inspect, tighten and torque all those bolts is worth something, right? I would get a replacement bolt from the dealership -- not a hardware store. It's a nice Car/Truck/Convertible. Good on you that you fixed stuff.

Good thing you caught those loose on missing bolts. That really is bad mechanic work there.😮 I wonder if while yo have the front wheels off the ground with the bridge jack and the engine off and turn the steering wheel lock to lock a bunch of times to maybe get some of the air out of the system. Could be too late for that. IDK. I agree with you. Those crappy front tires are most likely the cause of that steering wheel feedback you are getting. Like others have said, you might want to put some kind of heat shield/blanket around that ABS module. All in all that truck/car is pretty damn clean. I like it! It must be fun to drive! This is pretty damn bad if that many bolts were loose on that subframe. The whole subframe will drop down and drag on the concrete. The bolts that were tight will be broken completely off and nothing will be left to hold the new steering rack. Most likely be on the side of a ditch if not off a bridge. Terrible work from the dealer this is definitely a tech fault here.

Maybe I’m wrong but I think it gets hotter than the header. I mean after all that’s the way a catalytic converter works by getting extremely extremely hot. Yeah that’s not good because as you know brakes get very hot on their own just in normal operation. We certainly don’t want to add more heat to the system lol.
