My CHEAP Jaguar Runs Amazing After Doing A MEGA Tune Up

Last week I thought 2003 Jag S-Type powered by the 3.0 Duratec, with a 5 speed manual was the best car to work on. The engine bay had some clever engineering in it and everything could be repaired in minutes. Then I had to take the upper intake manifold off, I've done plenty of worse jobs but it wasn't easy in the slightest. As I kept tearing down the engine I found another massive problem, and this one is NOT easy to solve.

Common Questions:
What motorcycle do I ride? A few. Ducati 1198, Honda Goldwing, Honda Grom, Honda Ruckus
What do I do for a living? Make RU-vid videos.
Can you wheelie? No, I suck.
Are you fast? Sort of. I suck mostly though.
Where can I keep up with you off the bike?

Do you go to school? College, for 2 classes.
Why do you ride so dangerously? What do mean? I was doing 25.
Do you go to the track? Of course, hopefully there will be videos in the future.
Do you play video games? No, but I might stream N64 Goldeneye at some point. Twitch: WatchJRGo
Are you afraid the police will watch your videos and arrest you? Something something evidence something something warrants and due process of law

The Jaguar is really coming around. The “super” tune did wonders to put the growl back into the cat. It might seem petty, but the crusty looking steering wheel would drive me nuts. It can be dyed back to look new because a detailer at my Lexus dealer redid mine perfectly. Really made a difference.

you should replace the timing chain guides they’re a ticking time bomb aka brittle don’t ruin the engine

I think it's because if you do all the "while I'm in there" jobs you basically end up rebuilding the whole engine. You have to stop somewhere.

I’m soooo excited to see the Jaaag getting better. I spent over $10k onto mine to bring it back although it wasn’t in such a bad shape like yours. I figured out later mine was a kind of flip car. Dealers bought it than sold it within a short amount of time so it wasn’t even driven a lot i had only 99k miles on it and the car was like 12 years old when i got it. Mine had a 6 spd auto and it was very fast and smooth. The 3.0 v6 is not 0-60mph champion but it can surprise you when you on the highway and stepping onto the gas at 60mph. The mechanical parts are bullet proof unlike the electrical parts. It can be very annoying cause the check engine light is on for everything. Dispite all the issues what i had I freaking miss mine. Maybe one day I will get another one.

I worked at Ford on the assembly lines and built these motors. They have an entire different set of heads than the Ford version Duratec. The valves were activated using a direct action mechanical bucket. The ford heads used roller finger followers. It also had a much larger oil pan than the fords did allowing a larger oil capacity, as well as a oil cooler which likely could significantly extend the life of this motor if maintained properly.

My 1999 cougar had a 2.5 duratec with a 5 speed manual and no oil cooler did not fare so well. It only had a 5 qt capacity. At 68k miles I threw a rod. It didn't help that I drove that car hard and fast like it was a Porsche LoL!

The Noco 4000's are great jump boxes. They start everything in my rental fleet from dead flat.....excavators, loaders, even diesel dump trucks. It can even kick my 12V 3-battery semi truck over, so long as its not totally dead. We did manage to kill one after 2-3 years though, it seems like the internal chargers are the weak point. The battery shop I get them from confirmed they are the most common failure, but have no problems warrantying them before 18 months.

Most people look at this the wrong way. If you can pick up a luxury car cheap enough and restore it you have a nice car that should last for at least 300,000 mile. That's good value compared to what's on the new car market.

Good job, remember to pressure-bleed the cooling system, else you'll keep having trouble due to air bubbles. That might also affect your climate control! - After doing the suspension - if you want to add some "show" to the go, get some 18 inch alloys from the Jag XF. I have done same and they look great as well as allowing some wider tires. I got Yokohama Advan Fleva which are very quiet tires. And yes it should be like 'glued to the road' after getting it all in order. Can drift too... turn off the ESP...

Going forward there's a lot more room to work on the back of the engine when you take the cowling off under the wiper blades. If this is like my 2003 4.2l while it's off you can replace the cabin filter. Not a big job at all. Also if your car has HID headlights, buy good bulbs because replacing them is a bear.

Be careful with drifting/spinning the wheels. There's a software issue, at least with my 2.7d, which means that if the wheels spin, like in the snow, and the traction control is activated, sometimes it locks up the electronic parking brake next time you stop. You need to log into the parking brake module and reset it. I didn't know this and the first time it happened to me I spent £600 on new parking brake components. Next time the RAC man was able to reset it as I knew what the problem was. Apparently it's a service bulletin and software update in the US but here in the UK no Jaguar dealer or specialist know about it and and say I have the latest software.
