My Chevy Volt Is BROKEN And It SOUNDS Like A SKILL SAW - Stator/Rotor Bearing Failure

The most reliable car in my fleet is down for the count. My Chevy Volt started sounding like Optimus Prime or a circular saw when it's in regen. This seems to be a relatively common failure as the mileage creeps up on early Volts. It's caused by the bearing cage failing on the stator/rotor bearing, rumor is the original bearing cage was nylon and the replacement is made of brass.
TSB: PIP5081H: (EREV) Whine, Scrape, Whistle Type Noise While Driving - (Jan 8, 2016)
Models: 2011-2015 Chevrolet Volt 2014-2015 Cadillac ELR 2012-2014 Opel Ampera
Condition/Concern Some customers may comment on a whistle, scrape or whine type noise while driving that may be more noticeable during regenerative braking. Technicians may find this noise emanating from the left side of the drive unit (transmission). The tech may also state that the vehicle has a current or history code P0A46.
Recommendation/Instructions This noise may be caused by a separated electric drive motor B rotor bearing cage. A revised bearing has been released for installation into the drive unit. It is not necessary to remove the drive unit or motor for this repair. Follow SI (Document ID 2838728) on vehicle service, drive motor rotor bearing replacement procedure. During repairs inspect the end cover for any abnormal bushing wear, if found the side cover will also require replacement, however if no abnormal wear is found the cover can be reinstalled.
Important: Please ensure that the Special Tools DT-47865 - Bearing Remover and J-45124 - Removal Bridge are used to remove bearing. If proper tools are not used the rotor may be damaged leading to a repeat repair. DO NOT TRY TO PRY OUT. Important: To install bearing use Special Tools DT-22928-B Seal Installer per SI, as damage may occur if the proper tools are not utilized. Proper bearing orientation is the writing up or visible to technician. Please also order and replace the rotor shaft seal this could be damage during bearing removal or installation The side cover must be inspected in the bearing seating area as well as the bushing and resolver area. THE SIDE COVER AND THE TRANSMISSION COOLER MUST BE FLUSHED TO PREVENT RECONTAMINATION OF THE NEW BEARING. If the side cover or bushing are found to be damaged replace side cover. If any debris is on the rotor or side of transmission this should be cleaned/flushed with transmission still in vehicle. The transmission cooler also must be flushed. To do this the cooler thermostatic bypass must be removed.

Exactly, the best part is the dealership I bought it from said "Let us know if you have any issues, we'll make sure it's all taken care of". I bought from them with the charge port failed code, called and they said "Take it to Davis-Moore, we don't work on Volts" 😂

We bought a used Lexus off Craigslist and take it to Hendrick Lexus. Their lounge has a barista and snacks, all at no charge along with a nice fireplace and TV's everywhere, it's a service experience I actually look forward to and regardless of what we have the car there for, they always wash and vacuum it. We ended up buying a second Lexus due in part to knowing we would get excellent service whenever needed.

I don't get it... big fight every time some little thing breaks. I've done my research on the forums, I find the TSB, I call and say "I need this fixed, here's the TSB, when can you get it in?" Dealership: "IT"S PROBABLY NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY, YOU'RE GONNA HAVE TO PAY" 🤷‍♂️

It's the worst. Some pretty serious things that they avoid also. 3/4 of the truck made in mid 2000's that live in cold weather part of the year have severely corroded brake lines because of an obvious design flaw. Millions of truck driving around that are one hard braking away from total failure...

Thanks for this video, I've been reading all the forums too and it seems the majority are able to get it covered under the Voltec warranty while others have been saddled with a 1000+ dollar bill. My dealer is trying to charge me for the work but I have the voltec warranty still in place. Told them the PIP5801 over the phone and they come back saying its not covered so hopefully I can do what you did, go in person and make them look it up together and look for that V in the warranty!

I went to a different Chevy dealer and they approved the fix under warranty so of course when I go back to the original dealer where my car was with a print out from the other dealer with the signature "V" for voltec warranty covered they talked to the manager and he said he would cover it. Deff stick to your guns, if its less than 8 years old and under 100,000 miles, your car is covered for this repair! Thanks again

Hey I had a question, does every Volt come with Voltec warranty from GM? I got mine from a used dealership and I also have a 3rd person warranty that's about to expire soon and I'm having the rotor bearing problem at 86k. Hopefully my warranty will cover it if I give them the TSP.

I miss my Volt. Had a 2011 - Red - optioned to the hilt. Sold it in 2017 with 72,000 miles. In perfect condition to a friend that jumped at it when I mentioned I was buying a Tesla Model S. It was a great car. Zero out of warranty issues. Yep GM will always challenge you on the Voltec Warranty but they always came back with "Yep it's covered" and "Damn I would have bet it wasn't " It only took the GM dealer I worked with 2 days to replace the same bearing and I got a loaner from the dealership. The Volt is and was a fantastic car. GM for sure over built the 1st generation Volt. The naysayers said I was crazy to buy an extended ranger electric, crazy to buy the 1st year (2011) and crazy to buy 1st generation. Best car I've ever owned up to the Tesla and who knows it might beat out Tesla in the end in my mind

Good to know that the Volts easily reach almost 100k. Also this reminded me to schedule an appointment for my i3 charger, which likes to not release when the car is unlocked and charging is complete. I guess both cars are still developing technology!
@WatchJRGo
@WatchJRGo 5 лет назад
No real problems with it, I just want to find a Gen 2 before 100k so I can keep this killer warranty! What do you have to do to get the charger to release? The Volt uses a simple J1772 plug and I don't think it has a way to force charger retention from the drawings I've seen. Amber and I were looking at i3s for her last night.
@DougsCars
@DougsCars 5 лет назад
WatchJRGo Same plug! I’ve had it happen at home, and in public. The only way to release it is to start the car and run the heat/ac for a while until it triggers the charger back on to charge. Then it’ll release, sometimes it needs to lock/unlock again on the remote. It’s been a great car, I would totally recommend it for short commutes. Got mine as a CPO 2015 for a steal! My lady's silverado vent fan caught on fire one day while I was driving it. I was able to stop,rip the glove box out, and extiguish the fire. I looked on recall list and found recalls for fires with vent fan in Canada, but not in U.S. When I brought it to dealer they gave me a hard time about it, but then agreed to fix it. There was no difference between the Canadian fan assembly and the American, they just refused to do an U.S. recall. If my old lady would of been driving it it would of burned to the ground, and I'm pretty sure G.M. wouldn't have given me a dime.

Exactly the same problem since last night! Really glad to have found this video. Mine is 2013 and 73.000 mi. Thank you for all the very helpful comments and information! I have two questions though, sorry if I didn't catch, you didn't say how long it took for them to fix it in total - since my Volt is the only car I have, I drive it every day. And my other question is that you said you stopped driving it for 10 days once the noise began. Did you have any chance for a conversation with the service, confirming that you could've kept driving with the noise if you needed your car? Unfortunately, I have to drive to San Francisco from Los Angeles this weekend and I'm super worried about how to solve the logistics now. Thank you again! PS: Sorry for many questions! I have a third one, the service says they also charge $250 for inspection when I drop it off, and then they'd be able to tell what the problem exactly is. This is my first car here, and I'm from another country, so I'm not entirely aware of the norms. Was the inspection fee the case in your experience as well?

Just spoke to the dealership and they said it is not covered under warranty given the THB since it is at this point beyond 10 years. 2012 to 2022 is 10 years, so it was crazy to come up at this time. Still looking into it. Any one with any tips on this would be great.

Hmmm. follows motor rpm. Could be something simple like wheel well splash cover gotten loose and riding the thread on one of your rear tires, or worse, like motor bearing being shot making the rotor scrape in the stator!! If I'm right I expect to win something!

Interesting video. I love my Volt, but the dude on the internet with 400k on he claims that he's replaced the bearing multiple times. As such, it's not clear to me how durable the updated design is.
@KTPurdy

I should clarify that once GM has replaced a bearing they are guaranteed for life, meaning that each time they are replaced both parts and labor are fully covered.

This video is 3 years old. Hope you can share the cost of this job on your Volt bearing and seal job. My wife's Volt just started making the exact same noise. My son and I just replaced the axle and then the hub since the noise was still there.. Thought sure that would fix the problem. It didn't. Then I jumped on RU-vid to see if anyone had any noise in their transAxle part of car and yours came up first, and here you are driving it with the exact noise as the wife's car... I bought this for her back in 2012 (Oct 2011), and she has way over 100,000 so warranty has been gone for some time now.. I am wondering roughly what they charged for that job... Just to give her an ideal before taking to our local Chevy dealer.. Thanks in advance..

You could have made this video MUCH SHORTER. When, oh when, I wondered, will you get to the solution to the problem? I could not wait around to find out. I have a 2012 Volt, 120k miles, no problems. I chose to not renew my warranties after 5 years. Subsequently the electronic dashboard went dark and I had to replace it, out of pocket. Cheaper than a warranty.

VOLT bearing problem will be every 75.000 miles, before/after repair. It has nothing to do with wear/ lubricant, etc. The electric motor armature can not be grounded on both sides. Stray electric currents are running through bearing. To repair, an insulator must be built on either side of the armature. I saw this problem years ago on electric drive centrifugal air compressors. We put micarda insulators on the smaller coupling and problem was solved. Talk to an electric motor manufacturer like Seamans, Westinghous, GE for more information. I have had 2 Volts, a 2013 & 2017. Both have had the problem. The 2013 has been repaired 2x, once at over $4000.oo the 2nd time, which included a new electric motor. The 2017 is starting to be noisy at 40K miles. For more info. turbotechwest@kalama.com Jul 2020 Dave W.

They might charge a bit for this job I"ve done this myself it takes specialty tools and someone that can work with their hands very well because one wrong move and you might need to replace the whole motor. Only take it to a dealer that has someone trained to work on Volts.
