My Chicken Is Sick: 3 Practical Steps To Help It

When my chicken is sick the first thing I do is remove it from the coop. When you have a sick chicken the other hens will start to be mean to it so you need to get it out of the coop. You need to have a medium size dog crate or wire cage to have on hand, put the sick chicken in the cage and give it some water with a little vinegar.
Sometimes the best thing you can do is not feed it for a couple days or give it some wet bread. After it gets some strength back you can give it some regular chicken food. Then keep an eye on it and let it get it's strength back before you put t back in with the other chickens.

You have no idea HOW SMART Chickens are. Mine would come to me by calling their name's. Mine would come to my front door at the exact same time EVERY DAY for their treats and call for me. They would Nestle with me on my outdoor wicker couch. So much I could tell you about what they would do.
@barbossa1st
@barbossa1st 6 лет назад
Just Wonder I did the same thing. Mine were attacked by my neighbors pit bull. I used a turkey baster filled with peroxide and would squirt it under it's wings, where he had pulled all her feathers out. She healed, her sister and most of my Rhode island reds died. I named her Joanie for Joan of Arc. The pit bull returned months later and I found her playing dead in the yard. I had a special relationship with her and would spoil her rotten, including singing to her ( and all my other hens) while I would put them to bed at night. Lol. You should have seen their faces while I would sing, they would listen intently.

Thanks for the practical ideas! I at first took my nonlaying chicken to the vet. Was given a care guide which explains "culling" (killing chicken). My birds were pets mostly. I wasnt going to kill my 1 nonlaying chicken! She clucked and chirped happily for years.

Thanks Becky, Currently I have 2 chickens in my house. They were getting pushed around and their feathers were being plucked in the coop. Using a red light in the roost hasn't helped them either. None of the dogs or cats are bothered by them. And the chickens seem to have no interest in the fuzzy animals. I do let the chickens wander around in 3, connected, rooms in my home. But come bedtime, sundown, they go into wire cages inside. I understand not everyone would welcome birds in to their homes. I have found that the birds are much less stressed and heal faster this way.

Thank you so much. My hen went off her food, even dried mealworms!! I found her all hunched up and mopey on Christmas day of all days with no bird vet available, hard enough to find one even on a working day!! 😱. I borrowed my dog’s crate, followed all your tips including the bedding and wet bread and tbh I still expected to lose her overnight but next morning I was so pleased to find her chatting and eating again and by the next day she’s happily roaming the garden again with her battery rescue friends These girls were completely bald when rescued in October and I so wanted to see them enjoy the sun and joys of dust bathing next summer. Vet visits are often depressingly unhelpful due to lack of experience in hen care so these tips were literally a lifesaver for her. I’m so so grateful I found you as I’m really attached to my girls too.

One of the best things to encourage a chicken to eat is to offer them those "wet cat- food pouches". A dish with one scrambled egg cooled. A little sprinkle of chopped fresh parsley. I sprinkle about a teaspoon over their cracked grain. Keep it warm. Hope this helps.

One time one of my hens was having trouble walking and standing. She may have been egg bound. I am not sure. I googled what to do. I read to soak her in a tub of warm water and Epsom salt. It worked a day or two later she was all better. My Rhode Island Reds get poopy butts and I soak them in the water and Epsom salt mixture for that too. I put on gloves and kind of rub it off as they soak. Works like a charm. I have had a hens get beat up by one of my 🐓 roosters. She had a gash on the back of her neck. I isolatered her and squirted iodine on her wound and she completely healed up.

I have never taken my hens to the vets, after speaking to them on the phone, they know less than me!!! I have given my hens some personal attention away from the coop, given them TLC, some herbal remedies, some dietary treats (raisins & mealworms), vitamin water. They always amaze me how they come back to life. Its definitely worth a try.

If one is a Homesteader one needs to be a jack of all trades. There is an incredible amount of things to know, which includes one's limitations. To see a vet, your guess is as good as mine. Avian flu is something to be concerned about. Your point about isolation is so wise.

Ohno.I just read a post and gotta share one more thing. YES. Chickens are very smart! To where it's annoying that a critter with a pea sized brain can outrun you and outsmart you lol. But that's what makes them fun! You either pull your hair out or bust up laughing! I prefer laughing, that's why I love them. So here's the story. We lived in Oakland CA, my ex had just a couple chickens. The little polish one, Zinx, was with her. Big red, a rescue someone had found running down a main road was home in the coop in the backyard attached to the house. I tell ya, he was a scary rooster. Anyways, she was on a road trip, the rest of us were home. She called and left a voicemail (back in the days of answering machines), For Red!!! So her best friend held the machine out the window, to the coop, you should've seen that rooster try to jump in the window to get to mom! We laughed so hard! Poor bird really missed mama, he didn't like many other people. This is a bird that if you hold and pet him, be Careful if he looks at you, he WILL peck your eye out if his temper gets going. But another cool thing about Red, is that he would jump his enclosure, walk up the back stairs, and knock on the door. If he got ignored, he would walk to the front gate, jump that, walk up the front stairs, and knock on the front door! What a bird! And in Oakland California! We never worried about him running away. He had obviously been abused, loved his mom so much. Haha, I just realized how much I miss those days ;)

I've found that a mix of oat flour and nettle tea with some Vit C goes down well with even the sickest chick. Once they start gulping it down for themselves after feeding with a syringe I start adding a little of the regular wheat into it. :)

I have had Chickens for 10 years now and what I have learned is If one of my chickens get sick I keep the sick one in the coop just make sure she is separated and has everything it needs...food water heat if need be and meds if it needs meds.....I have baby gates that I can hook up in my coop for that reason because I noticed when I take them out of the coop and days later put them back in the other one's pick on them for a few days to establish a new pecking order....so keeping them separated but they can still see one another seems easier to reintroduce them.

Always do yourself first is best. I only have taken one chicken to a doctor for birds because I failed at getting rid of bumble foot. I did not want to lose this chicken. Mostly I do all the health prevention and treatment and for the bumble foot I did remove it but it was not enough that he needed so he got put on antibiotics because I wanted to keep him alive. He is our pet now but that's ok. He is such a sweet chicken.

Hey, Becky! I hear you! One of my chickens got a bad case of "bumblefoot" - There is NO VET in this area that will even attempt to work on a chicken!!! Wow!! Even the ones that specialize in treating parrots and cockatoos won't treat chickens. Unbelieveable! My vet only treats dogs and cats, and unfortunately, most here only treat dogs and cats. There are still a few that treat livestock (cattle, horses, goats and pigs) but they won't treat chickens, either!

Hey Becky,... I wish there was a way to help a chicken who has gotten something stuck somewhere in her digestive tract. My niece recently had a hen who stopped eating & she took her to the vet (an old timer who actually KNOWS how to deal with these birds). He x-rayed her & found that she had swallowed a sewing needle while foraging & it was stuck somewhere in her reproductive system! She was my niece's & her husbands favorite chicken... "Bellina", a beautiful buff orpington only a year old. The vet operated on her & after surgery her heartbeat was strong. Unfortunately, an hour later she passed... VERY SAD day for them! And then a couple weeks ago one of my golden comets stopped eating & became very non-functioning. I brought her right in & gave her a warm epsom salt bath. I didn't think it was a matter of a stuck egg but did this to a few of my girls this past summer & they all perked up like they had just had a day at the spa! But Lacey, my most beautiful "golden girl" lasted 4 days & passed. She just could not eat. I had her in the house during those days & gave her acv and colloidal silver via an oral syringe but apparently it wasn't a digestive issue. I feel she must have gotten something stuck while foraging also. Absolutely broke my heart. I still have 14 hens but she was special. I guess they ALL are so no matter which one passes it's traumatic.

Hello, my daughter has this chicken that I have been caring for. She was getting picked on by my RIR. So I removed her from the coop, She has been separated and better. In an extra large kennel. She seems to be getting better. Been over a month in this kennel. I have been giving her vitamins and blueberries. Vetrx treatments But still in the main area of the outdoor coop. So she won't get lonely. Yesterday I took her outside with all the chickens. Which I have been doing for a couple days a week. The RIR kinda go after her but I stop them. She was fine. But today she is weak and leaning on one side. Again she has always been super small. Side not her before I removed her, her feet were always shaking. She would also shake her head quite a bit. I have checked her for mites and thght that maybe she had bumble foot. Treated her for that. She had a small spot/sore on one foot. Again was doing so much better. But now today she is really bad. For the past month poultry cell, Vetrx treatments, bumble foot treatment, apple cider vinegar in water, and vitamins added to water( which I rotate out). No lice or mites, Extra vitamins. We have been bringing her into the house to walk around. Reached out to chicken forums. With no help. She had trauma from our dog when she was around 4 months. Everyone bounced back from that. Also the trauma of the RIR which I removed her. If you have any ideas, I would love to hear them. I have also given her eggs

not necessary but it is an organic choice. the acid in the vinegar of whatever type helps to restore a healthy crop and gut. I also give 0.5 ml poly vi sol baby vitamins directly into her mouth/throat every other day as illness causes body stress and depletes vitamins quickly, just as in people, plus some birds simply need more vitamins that others. important to check the crop of an off bird to make sure she is actually digesting what she is taking in. Impacted and/or sour crop is the cause of many birds' distress symptoms in which case you need to help her empty her crop and then restore her to health. One of my pullets went downhill fast after one day of impacted crop and she could not stand or walk, honestly she looked dead in the coop. She is now improving, she can stand and take a few steps and she is filling and emptying her crop like a real trooper, but this is 5 days now of assisting her in getting healthy again. She is even able to tolerate some supervised coop time to maintain her status as a member, very important to prevent future abuse.

I've watched Becky for many years and really appreciate the guidance that she puts out!💕 My daughter and I have 11 chickens at the moment. She is totally blown away by the fact that the girls are so loving. We have gone through bumblefoot and figured out how to treat it from chicken groups and with the HUGE bottle of Hibiclens that ive used on cats, kids, dogs, bunnies and birds over the years. Hazel is healthy and happy again after about a week....the biggest "medicine" in her favor was the fact that we caught it early. Isolating the chicken is another very helpful "medicine." Both my daughter and I are very eager to "figure out" why something is going wrong with our furry and feathered friends when they are droopy or off. Fortunately, she has a BS in Biology and spent her graduate studies working one on one with birds and I've an excellent BS meter and have been surrounded by many breeds of animals as well as a strong basis in Biology/Anatomy. If something is going on with sombunny🤔I want to figure it out, not just listen to the first thing someone tells me. So far in 35 years that method has been a success(knock on wood). After having housebunnies and kids for 40+ years, my Golden rule has always been KEEP THEM HYDRATED!!! That almost bit us in the butt just this week 😳 My daughter came in on Sunday evening to announce "Mom, something is wrong with Iris (an Easter Eggers who just began laying last week when the temperatures in Kansas topped 100 AGAIN!) She's been lethargic and hasn't been eating all day!" I suggested bringing her into the house and mixing up some of that chicken water with electrolytes and I would make sure she stayed hydrated. She drank at least to keep her ticking, but she refused to eat anything, not even blueberries Monday morning I got some of the sweet electrolyte water into her and managed to get her to eat the inside of a cherry tomato, so ibought her Strawberries and watermelons (both high sugar fruits) and only minimally attempted them.😒 Independently of each other, my daughter and I crawled into bed Tuesday night with our laptops and set out to figure out what was ailing Iris and how to get her up and running. Wednesday morning I was ready to try treating her for being eggbound. Had to start somewhere and being a brand new layer with the horrible heat....it made sense. Kaati decided that she was probably dealing with sour crop, something I'd never dealt with in all the years of chickens. As soon as she told me that sour crop was a yeast infection In the crop, felt like a class A chicken killer!🙄🙄. The primary way to treat sour crop is to take her off a forms of starch, grains, and sugars! The treatment that made the most sense was to get her to take garlic water and nothing else for 24 hours or until she starts the morning with a flat crop! Why garlic water you ask? There is an element in garlic water called Allicin, that is an anti fungal which works to kill the yeast. Any starches (BREAD, Sugars from fruits or the electrolyte mixture that Id been pouring down her to keep her hydrated were all providing a banquet for the yeasties in her crop and making it sicker and sicker! I fell like a criminal! Ironically, she does a pretty good job with the garlic water offered once every hour and she's also being hydrated. If her crop is flat tomorrow morning, we will give her some regular, plain yogurt, or plain Kiefer to reestablish the proper bacteria in her crop,as well as garlic water. The key process is to keep her diet high protein for her and low starch and sugar to starve out the yeast until she starts her days with a flat crop and some poops, then gradually reintroduce her grain and regular diet. I now see that this may take a couple of weeks,I'll take the time overall dead chicken!! The point that Im try to make in my sermon is to have access to people who have a broad range of experiences with chicken ailments so that you don't actually do more harm than good in treating a sick feather baby. I came too close to doing just that!!

I got a "chicken care" book for farming. Sick chicken? Cull. Chicken doesnt lay eggs? Cull. Culling means killing of course. Sure I collected eggs but the chickens were pets too. I couldn't do it. Took chickens to vet. The vet didn't normally see chickens but he did help.

Our entire flock got a URI and were so bad we did take one to the livestock vet. He gave us Tetracycline which we had to add to their water for 7 days. It worked and they are their old selves again.

Find your poultry specialist -- Remember -- most states have state operated diagnostic labs (often associated with a university with an agriculture program) with poultry specialists. Google your state and veterinary diagnostic lab to find the contact info. There is also diagnostic testing available that is often very inexpensive (for example we charge a 10$ fee for poultry testing) .

Becky, or anyone. I have a Rhode Island Red that has gone broody. I have 2 RI Red hens and both became almost broody; however, one seems to be healing well and is running with the rest of the flock, but still no egg production. Now, the other Rhode Island red that I have; I have been having to get her out of the nest everyday, sit her in front of food and water, she will eat and drink, and go about being normal, but she seems to be wanting to constantly clean her beak, I have checked her for obstructed eggs- nothing. Every morning I am giving her lots of calcium, they have electrolytes in their water, I live in Tennessee and it is already over 100° heat index on days, like I said she will run around with the Flock, and act normal for about 30 minutes before returning to the nest. However, like I said " constantly cleaning her beak, she will stand up really tall and flap her wings and make a loud noise unlike the others as well. She is almost 1 yr old. This has been going on for over a week and a half now. I can promise that none of my birds are short of any electrolytes or protein. They are free range, smart, happy and healthy for the most part. But why have both of my Rhode Island Red chickens stopped laying eggs and why is one acting sick and broody that I have been having to give assistance to for the past week. I have done Epsom salt baths, and I have also used a suction bulb and gave her some mineral oil in her vent, thinking maybe she was constipated or had an obstruction. I only have four hens, two are Rhode Island Reds, and that's the only two not laying eggs, and- one has been sick and broody. I have worked at Tyson and Shelbyville Tennessee as a floor technician along with the USDA I know a lot about slaughtering chickens but raising them has been a much more wonderful experience; however, it's been fun, yet , more complicated. Somebody help. Sometimes I love my animals better than people - yep even my birdies- everything I have is well taken care of, and I take pride in how long I have had them to, and I don't want to lose my little red

Hi Becky - I am a long time fan from when you first got chickens. I need help. I had an egg break inside of one of my two hens. She had started sitting down while she was out and about under the trees. I thought it was odd but did not know that was a sign of being egg bound. So now, she stopped eating and I really paid attention. I sat her in the ebsom salt bath yesterday after watching your video, and also flushed out the vent pocket. She tried to push the stuff out and I saw a couple of broken egg shards stuck in a blood clot. I tried to pull on it but it is strongly attached and I do not want to risk causing her to bleed inside there. I am so worried and can see the redness on the skin on her underside and know that means infection. I have read I should be giving an antibiotic. I cannot get her to take electrolyte water, but she did drink a couple of times this am on her own. I need help in figuring out how to get her to open her beak to take medicine and what kind to get. I tried to give her electrolytes with calcium in it by dropper, but she would not open her beak. I know to keep the tip of her beak point a little downwards as to not have water go into her lungs - but I an not being successful at this. She will not eat her favorite treats or anything for the last 40 hrs. or so. Please any advice??? Help!

Hi there. I lost a chicken last week and because of covid the vets couldn’t perform a post Mortem. A week later and I have a sick chicken so acted fast. Got her in to the vets and they gave her a shot of antibiotic. Her poop isn’t watery yet she’s not wanting to mix with my other Rhode Island reds. I took her out of the flock to isolate her where I’m not sure she’ll survive but the vets just said that chickens go down hill fast and sometimes we don’t know. My chickens have the probiotics and ACV in their water drinkers and in the winter are fead sardines, tuna if they don’t eat pellets and corn but they are spoilt and I give them everything it breaks my heart when I see one sick for no reason.

How long does it take for them to come right? I noticed 2 days ago my brown shavers comb going from red to pink and pale, didn't know what was happening she was still walking around fine but today i found her sitting in the nest box and not coming out. I don't think shes eating and i think her crops empty, ive isolated her in her own cage and have given her abit of water with apple cider and marmite in a syringe. Shes still sitting and resting in her cage but kind of has a heavy breathing now and then.

Could it have brought in a disease without any signs? Nevertheless thank you for your time and info, I really like your channel, keep up the good work!
