Instead of a stick for a swing, try a platform type. Bread tray from store, or a small framed hardwear cloth. It's not unstable , and you can put treats on it. I'm glad you discovered the protein issue.

I had this issue mid-summer here in Florida. So I did a little checking for mites. Added DE to the entire coop. Did a little chemical spraying around the perimeter of the coop. Added some bug lights and I have still seen some feather loss. So I looked up the issue on some online forums and found out this issue was happening everywhere. A lot of people were finding the same results. No pest and it was pointing to PROTEIN ISSUES. Which made a lot of sense to me. I believe we are seeing a lack of ingredients to are feed because of the short supply. So I went with this theory and supplemented my protein to frozen "broccoli" which was the highest source I found. So now we are at the end of Sept and I have found my flock is looking well and back to normal !!! I would highly recommend anyone reading this to INCREASE your proteins for a bit. Especially when your flocks are not free ranged.

I thought about diet too but we feed them organic chicken feed, grub terra 39% protein, all kinds of greens from our garden and yard and besides, our other chickens don't have this issue and they all eat the same thing.

I do agree that the feed we by now is very low in nutrients compared to years ago. The faming process and depleted soils are not good.

Thank you, only 4 of my eight have bladed butts. I thought I had a bully, did the De bought mite spray, nothing seams to help. I will try the broccoli. It’s only effecting my sessex not my barrocks

Pete B, long time chicken owner here. I had the same feather picking problem a few years ago. The hens have a very large run and lots of things to do including an old small tree to climb on, but one of the hens started in and a few of the rest joined in. I tried following all sorts of tips, but feather picking kept rearing it's ugly head. The final tip (from a VERY old chicken hand--haha, she'll love me saying that) I tried was to give the hens a small amount of raw hamburger for a few days in a row. Darned if that didn't work. I moved them to cooked hamburger with the juice added as I just didn't like the idea of leaving raw meat anywhere outside. It did seem to be the Leghorns picking on the Buff Brahmans and I have since changed over to just Brahmas and NorthStars. Both are very docile breeds. They don't seem to be engaging in the feather picking (knock wood) but both breed seem to enjoy the occasional treat of cooked hamburger. I hope all settles down for you soon. I really hate disruptions out in the chicken coop. Don't know why it bothers me, it just does. Really enjoy your videos.

Give the chickens hamburger. If that doesn't help, eat the chickens so you have hamburger stuffed chickens. LOL. Kidding aside, if they peck and then eat the feathers, they have protein deficiency.

We are in the uk and have this problem occasionally with our small flock. I give them sardines, or beef bones from the butcher. Your breed requires more protein I think. Raw minced beef is a great option. Mine go mad for it!

Pete - I periodically dig holes in my run and leave the large clumps of dirt for the chickens to scratch through. It gives them something to do and the eat some of the left over roots.

Strange things are happening all over the place. Like our food and FEED supply stores burning down. Don't know if any chicken hatcherys have had to make any changes but it makes you wonder. I know your giving them a great diet but, just to eliminate any weird food problems going, try this for one week to see what happens. Give them a big scoop of your dog food crushed up a little bit once a day for a week and see if it works. This is only a temporary thing just a test!!! I have not had the need to try this. Yet. Pete - I really like your channel. Thanks for taking the time to put it together. You gave me some good ideas for my chickens and coop - like the way you wrapped and staked your hardware cloth - I made that my project for this evening. I've had two birds that looked perfectly healthy die within 24 hours. One time, I went into the coop and there she was, dead in the corner. No idea what caused it, and the other birds stayed in perfect health. It's very odd and sad when that happens. I do free range my girls a lot. And I've lost to coyotes, dogs, and hawks. But I've found that if I let them loose less, and not at the same time every day, or do it when I know I'll be outside, the loss is a lot less. The predators are smart, and they won't take the risk if I'm there, and they won't spend the time/energy to case my yard unless a payoff is more likely. Seeing how happy being outside and free to roam makes my girls, makes the risk (a bit more) worthwhile. When the predators do strike - as someone else said - it does keep the flock stronger and smarter. The birds are more watchful, and they take fewer risks after they survive an attack. I guess that's a silver lining to the loss.

My black Australorps are doing the same thing on the crown of their heads. I never thought their own breed were doing it .. They say to put pie pans or other things for them to play with will stop their boredom. I was thinking of putting in a swing too! You may want to try food grade Diatomaceous Earth (into the area they do their dust bathing) to prevent them from getting mites if that's a possibility... I cannot let my chicken run free range either...because of hawks...But here in the Appalachian Mtns, the Conservancy here has introduced Coyotes & Wolves (which produces hybrids)&wild boars. We already have Mtn Lions, Bob Cats, Foxes, & Black Bears...besides Deer & Elk...and then there are the smaller animals that like to dig around the coop... I think it's mink that will kill all the birds before leaving...I don't know why they do that. A friend of mine warn me about it... Anyway, I will allow my Chickens loose a couple hours in my fence in back yard before dusk while I work outside...they will go back to the coop to bed down...I use a large wide plastic rake and walk slowly behind them....kinda nudging them in away ..I don't have to touch them...If you have problems then find something on the Internet and play it on your cell to help them remember what comes out at night... Thanks for sharing...it helps me... I don't let them out of there area everyday.... I am always bringing them something special to eat... that's what motivates them to go to the back yard from their coop...

We hang cabbage heads for them to peck at. Drill a hole through the core and tie a string to the overhead. I would hang a few inside and out.

@@petebeasttexashomesteading Here's the funny thing I learned about cabbage tethered ball for my chickens: purple cabbages are much cheaper than regular green ones. But... don't be alarmed when you see blue fluorescence or teal or turquoise chicken poos all over the chicken run area. 😆

Hello Pete, in addition to the feather plucking, I'm sure you checked for mites as well. I might suggest placing "peepers" on them for a couple of weeks and see if that doesn't help. Peepers prevent the chicken from seeing directly what's in front of them and thus prevents feather plucking. they are a type of blinders made for chickens that are a little too aggressive. I have used them on a few of my chickens that were plucking other chickens feathers out and it stopped immediately. You can purchase them through Amazon. They are cheap, relatively easy to put on the chicken and very humane. The chicken gets used to them in less than 30 minutes from my experience. Cheers.

@@opiegonebad58 I can only guess since I don't know your particular situation. try to have 4 square feet of coop space per bird and 8 square feet of run space. Tight quarters will cause fighting as well. There should be an established pecking order where most feathers are being pulled out of the lower tier birds (there will always be some feather pulling as long as it does not go to the extreme and harming the other birds). I would only put the peepers on the more aggressive birds to make the field more even for the lower tier birds. Finally, If you have roosters, there should only be one rooster per 10-12 hens or they also will pull out the hen's feathers. A single over aggressive rooster can do the same. Hope this helps. Mites perhaps. Not a chicken expert . Our thousand dollar rescue hen hasn’t laid an egg since the one she laid in the box on the way to our house. Watched a lady on another channel ( homesteading by choice ? ) had built wire tunnels along the fence lines . Pack of hens following along behind her as she does her video. Have a great day

2 years ago, I had 2 roosters that died like that. My wife and I added diatomaceous earth in the feed and so far no more deaths.

Ours molted the first time and backs had no feathers. Then Rooster would do his thing and cut them really bad. Isolated him. Increased protein and giving them activities in the coop. But everytime you see them coming back even after I started free ranging during the day they pull them out still soon as they get good quills. Darn birds. Some of them have been able to sneak in some feathers here and there back. But it’s been about 6 months or more so far.

First make sure you only have 1 or maybe 2 roosters in the pen. 2nd you need to start feeding a much wider variety to your existing flock. Lots of protein and greens as well as mix some Diatomaceous earth in there scratch.

Could be fowel tick infestation. They feed on them at night. There is a channel here on utube. Called bock bock that had a issue with them. They caught it before any loss of life.

I dont know, but my chickens are also bored and I DO free range here. I'm changing up the hen house and doing a very deep clean. I also know that the roost is not big enough and some are being picked on. I may sound like I should be wearing a tin hat, but geoengineering (chemtrails, not contrails) are heavy in our area. If you're thinking chemtrails are conspiracy, you are totally wrong. Chemtrails stay and don dissappear, contrails do. The chemtrails are full of metals and our wildlife is taking the brunt of it; not to mention the fact thats what our weird weather is all about. Anyway, thats my two cents worth.

Hi Pete…looks like mites…. Clean the entire coop & run out, add food grade Diatomaceous Earth, you can get it at Tractor supply…sprinkle it every where even in their food. Where a mask, you don’t wNt to breathe it, it’s gray powder. They will dust bathe in it, they will be ok when they dust bathe in it. I never had a problem, had chickens for 5 years & they never got sick from it. I buy 1 40lb bag & last me a year, I have 38 chickens. I treat the coop,run & add to their feed every 3 months. Sorry bout your rooster, chickens can develop tumors at anytime. I had a hen do the same as your rooster did…nothing you can do but try….& you did…. Nikki - Ohio

good afternoon,. have you used DE for mites . in their feed and on the ground. oyster shell. if they continue. could be a protein deficiency. your pens do not look over loaded ( crowded). sounds like internal parasites. been raising them for over 25 years never had this and mine are all in smaller pens , dirt no grass.

Thanks, I don't think it's a protein issue, we feed them grub terra regularly and it's 39% protein and my other hens don't have this issue. I think you're right about the parasite problem that killed my rooster. I'll be adding DE to there feed and around the coop.

Hello Pete. i just subscribed {I thought i had already}. Just to let you know i borrowed your roost design. It is awesome! But anyway, I have 4 each of Buff Orpingtons, Light Brahma's, and Australorps all pullets from Hoover Hatchery. when i open my coop doors, I find black feathers. All my pullets were hatched on August 1st, and I received them on the 2nd. so not really a molting issue. I live up in Mn so not really sure how much of a mite problem they are around here. like you I will probably get some diatomaceous earth to see if that helps. i plan on feeding them some raw hamburger like was suggested also. Good luck and i hope you get to the bottom of this puzzle and let us all know.

The poor rooster looked very poorly. When the face and comb go that pale, sadly, they are typically at the point of no return. How old are they now? Sorry for the loss, never easy.

If it’s anything like parrots and feather picking, it’s a diet issue. They are missing something and eating too much grains. With parrots, it’s too much seed. Parrot owners make a chop with lots of kale and other leafy greens. You could ask the president of chickenlandia. She is a backyard chicken expert and on RU-vid. She might have an answer.

I had a green-winged macaw for 30 years and had one incident of feather plucking... was a combination of stress and boredom. Varied his diet a bit and upgraded his toys (toys that held treats he had to work at to get them worked best) and problem solved. Big difference between an exotics and chickens... so sorry Pete! Is there a follow-up to this video? I've been having the same problem and this is the first video that suggest what it may be if it's not mites. I suspected that it's because mine are not free-ranged, for the same reasons you have. I do give them a lot of protein and started putting Blucote on the backs of the ones with the larger bald spots to see if that helps. Aside from the bald spots, they are doing great and laying normally.

I have heard when they eat there feathers it is a lack of protein in there diet. I lost a roster this year to real fast like that . Don’t know what happen .

They do get plenty of protein in their diet plus my other chickens are fine. The rooster probably had some type of parasite.

Hey fellow East Texan! A week ago I had a similar thing happen with a hen. She was fine the day before and then the next day sadly passed like your Rooster. She looked similar as far as feather loss. Sorry we are in the same boat and for your loss. My hens started plucking each others feathers during our artic blast. I put DE in their run and changed their feed to higher protein. Strange that we are in a similar area and same problem. Been feeding wild bird seed, black sunflower seeds, organic egg layer feed, and oyster shells. After the hens death a lot of their eggs started being soft. Switched to a feather fixer feed, pecking block, still wild bird seed, still sunflower seed, still oyster shells, and giving lots of greens to them.

I have one chicken out of 15 that has a lot of feathers missing but not nearly as bad as yours and I suspect they were being plucked because I couldn't find any evidence of an infestation but now the problem is from the roosters mating with her she has a giant gash in her side now or she's being cannilabalized by her own.

Chickens can be very mean, if they see red, they will peck at the other hen.

@@skaterz49 There is a product called blu-kote wound care. Just spray a little on that area and it will turn blue so the other chickens won't be attracted to it.

it is some what common. They were all great when they were younger, but now they're all gone crazy. My other chickens never had a problem with this so it's not a protein issue as others have stated.

Build some chicken tractors and move them around your property, and maybe you can add minerals and vitamins to their food , till the dirt so they can take dirt baths.

it's been a year so I don't know how you made out. But you may want to give your chickens POULTRY NUTRI-DRENCH QT , it will help with the feathers, and chicken's health and harden up any soft shell eggs.

Put up a large covered chicken run and let out the flock that are getting stressed more until the problem solves itself.

My hens only stop pecking each other if I feed them meat like hot dogs pork sausage sliced lunch meats from dumpster diving fresh hamburger

Also remember these are GMO breeds and are not normal but that's what people want to get more eggs .. I ordered wild game fowls they are looking great and they can fly high and fare to escape predators .. 50 feet high one block in distance yet they lay 3 eggs a week but they brood really well

It’s their diet chickens never had health issues until man penned them up let them out about 2 hours before dark ever day if ole hawk gets one ever now and then will just help keep your flock stronge

Everytime I let them out just when I am not looking a wild stray dog kills one ... I lost over 10 hens this way

Yes, we feed them all the weeds from our garden except weeds with pickers on them.

I think it's just a phase they go through. Shortly after this video, they started to grow their feathers back, I haven't had a problem since.

I absolutely cannot stand these chickens... they are the strangest breed we've ever had... even free range they are doing this, and attacking the other hens we have. My last two we will be processing soon... we are most likely changing to the American Bresse Breed. We'll keep the Golden and Red Sexlinks... absolutely love them.

@@Jesusiscoming24 just normal free range chickens... yes they've constantly attacked the other hens... the moment we introduced them to our original flock, they've been pure evil... our rooster has been kept busy breaking up their attacks. Sooo we won't do this breed again.

@@amsohn1 ... Cool ... Talk about evil when I burned my leg I let my chickens run free .. I lived in a tent and they would repeatedly attack my tent with a crazed look in their like they were taking cocaine .. it was hard to get out of bed I could only hop around took 30 days to heal cause I kept ripping my wound and had to reheal it ten times but I am good now .. and I ordered baby game fowl chicks I ordered 15 and got 10 and 2 died so I wish I could have ordered 30 cause they may not hatch .. and the company waited 30 days to give me a refund of the difference it's their policy but at least they provide a great breed 💸

I thought about diet too but we feed them organic chicken feed, grub terra 39% protein, all kinds of greens from our garden and besides, our other chickens don't have this issue and they all eat the same thing.

That's the thing not enough bugs to eat yet plenty of bugs to attack my gardens lol but the bugs avoid my chicken yard maybe I should lure bugs in the chicken yard with rotting vegetable mulch in the center of the chicken yard in a container chickens can't get in

We feed them Grub Terra solder fly larva almost everyday and it's 39% protein. Our other chickens don't have this issue.

That's what we thought too but we feed them plenty of protein like Grub terra daily which is 36% protein. The chickens have now slowed down on the pecking but I'm not sure why.
