DEsect-LP is a formulation of Diatomaceous Earth specifically designed to be used on Livestock and Poultry to kill mites, fleas, lice and ticks.
In this episode of Home and Garden Innovations Russel Smith takes you to Southern California where he addresses the problem of chickens picking off their feathers because of mite irritations.
Mites are a blood sucking parasite that cause irritation to chickens. As chickens become irritated they pull their feathers trying to find relief to the irritation. When all the while mites are happily and safely feeding on your chickens skin.
Not to worry! DEsect-HG is a special formulation of Diatomaceous Earth that kills mites by dehydration. Diatomaceous Earth is a porous mineral that is found by mining special deposits of Diatoms. Its properties include rapid water absorption.
When applied to Chickens and rubbed in down to the skin of your chickens DEsect-HG is effectively placed on and in the path of the mites that are feeding on your chickens and irritating their skin.
As the mites crawl through the Diatomaceous Earth they are effectively coated in the Diatomaceous Earth and killed rapidly by dehydration.
DEsect-HG is effective and safe for use around the home, children, poultry and livestock. No harmful ingredients are used in DEsect-HG.

Please remember, if you keep chickens and allow them to free range, you will get mites. Mites show up because wild birds use the same watering jugs, forage the same food, and simply visit your yard. Also, if you have a wooden coop, chances are you have mites. The humidity and temperature changes cause the wood to form tiny crevasses that mites hide during the day. Basically, if you get mites, you have not failed your flock in any way. You are not a bad chicken keeper. It simply happens to even the healthiest flock of chickens. OK, now that I got that out of the way...clean the coop regularly and DE is your friend!

I use the diatomaceous earth also and it really works butt you shouldn't pour it where it makes a cloud that they will breathe. the particles in the air can get into the lungs which can lacerate the lining of the lungs and that could cause other problems so what I do is I take my birds one at a time and dust them with smaller amounts slower it takes a little more time doing one at a time. Afterwards I sprinkle it on the ground when they're not in their coop and I sprinkle it everywhere and any place where they would normally dust bathe. also in there nesting boxes and also their food containers and like you said you should dust the chickens several times for about a week or two to make sure you get all the generations of mites. It also works on those Chinese water roaches and all kinds of bugs and unlike pesticides, it doesn't harm the chickens they are still organic and their eggs are still organik egg without pesticides in the egg. Remember, pesticides are poison and if you don't want to eat poison then don't poison your chickens to get rid of pests.

@Cathy, if it affects pests, would it also affect beneficials? Also, O imagine applying that stuff at night might be easier when the birds are resting? Just a thought!

@@shannonbrock3588 I know your question wwas a while back, and to another commenter, but they must not have gotten the notice of your post. Yes, unfortunately, it will also kill beneficial bugs. It is a payoff. You just have to decide how to fight the problem you are facing, and decide the best option for your situation. I have been using DE forever! This guy has the best intentions, but he certainly did not realize what he was doing. Watch other videos about DE. The best solution is to prevent the mites to begin with. And it takes VERY LITTLE to do that! I bought a large bag of food grade DE over a year ago, and I use it for all my animals and even myself. And I still have over half a bag. It lasts forever! Cause a little goes a long way! If you begin using it from the start, then you only need a little on the chickens, and in their dust bath and in their food. That way, you do not harm the good insects! If you get anphids, you can decide if you want to use it and risk maybe killing a good insect or not. I have always opted to use it if I have a bad anphid infestation. I figure there must not really be a good insect around, or the anphids would never get a foot hold! lol Good luck!

Jeez, please don't do this with your birds!! DE is a great product if used properly. Don't dump this on on them. This is horrible. DE dries the insects out and can cause harm to people and animals the same way if it gets in their lungs/eyes. Also wear eye googles, wear gloves and a particle mask to help with the dust. You don't want to breathe this or get it on your skin. (I made that mistake one time) It dries your skin out. I'd personally put a LITTLE DE on the ground and them let the chickens take a bath in it and put it in the coop and nesting boxes. Just buy a bag of diatomaceous earth FOOD grade online. You don't need this DEsect-LP. Its all the same as long as its a white powder like flour. Also, you (humans or animals) can take it to help with internal parasite. I put it in yogurt or oatmeal. Most of all, Do your own research on DE and you will be fine. Knowledge is power!

99% of the feather loss looked like it was due to molting and overbreeding, not the mites.

every summer or a change for new chicken. Creosote the coop take out all perches as that is a favourite place for lice to hide, cover all well with with the creosote, use a sprayer if you have one. do all crevices in the roof spaces. leave all doors open for a few days so as to naturalise. also, move coop if portable. clean the coop out on a regular basis too.

Missing feathers on the back is telltale of the rooster mounting her repeatedly. Roosters have favorites as well and certain girls will be bred way more than others. Understand what you are looking at before deciding on a treatment.! Applying it like you are is WRONG!!!

@@MrE_ Well you need to contact the companies and the FDA. Because they disagree with you. YOu say "dust", like all "dust" are the same. Here is a hint, THEY ARE NOT THE SAME. You can "drink liquid" just fine too. UNLESS THAT LIQUID IS ACID. Inhaling DE is VERY DETRIMENTAL TO HEALTH for all AIR BREATHING ORGANISMS. Whether you want to know it or not.
@wordswritteninred7171
@wordswritteninred7171 3 года назад
@@MrE_ Do you know what "wilfully ignorant" means? It is what you are. People, all through this comment section, have stated that it is dangerous to inhale DE. Yet, somehow, you, with NO KNOWLEDGE, want to argue about it. YOu MUST KNOW that you do not have the information. Once upon a time, there MIGHT be an excuse for it. But the information is at your finger tips. A quick search, and you would have the information. I know you didnt do a search, because I have been using it for decades, and have seen the warning too many times to count. Why anyone forms an opinion, without knowledger, is pure ignorance. To STICK TO THAT OPINION when so many have pointed out that the opinion is wrong, is just BEYOND WILFULLY IGNORANT! An intelligent person, would take TWO WHOLE SECONDS and do a quick search, to find out the facts. BUT NOT YOU! Good luck with that.
