These are some of my favorite plants. I have several of them now. I trim them back every couple years and will use some of the clippings to start new plants. When I first started growing these plants, I was lucky if they would bloom. Back then I was moving about once a year. I have been in this house now 10 years and have noticed that a majority of them now bloom every year. Most are indoor plants, but some I do move out to the sun room during the summer months. I found this year that I have an “Easter” variety. I have pink, white and red flowing plants at this time. I just ordered seeds for a plant that will produce blue flowers. I have several diffent varieties of plants. I seldom buy plants anymore. I will usually ask friends if I can have a small clipping of one of their plants. I have also started buying plants from satires that are on the “clearance” rack. The plants are ideally mostly dead withe very little slice growth. I will take the plant home and trim off all the dead growth and replant if needed. It usually takes a little time and patience, but I can nurse the plant back to a health growing plant at a fraction of the cost of fully grown plants. I will also do the same with outdoor plants.

My mom has an old girl is well.... She looks a lot like yours I know she was my grandmother's... She definitely needs a lot of help she got left out in the rain all summer and got waterlogged..... When I touched her one of our segments fell off and I picked it up and my mom said I can have it so I'm currently trying to propagate from that and hopefully I can make plant for myself 🤞

What type of soil do you use for starting the christmas cactus seeds? Do you also use the same soil for rooting cuttings as well? I have found that many of the cactus soils still seem a bit heavy and don’t drain quite as well, maybe I need to amend the soil with perlite, suggestions? Love your channel with helpful tips and tricks for my plants!
@desertplantsofavalon
@desertplantsofavalon 2 года назад
Hi Billie :-D I use a soil mix of loam and horticultural sand and perlite at 3 equal parts, but you can use normal cactus soil and add extra perlite for drainage and aeriation, I use the same soil for rooting the cuttings too, so happy you enjoy my channel and thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a terrific Tuesday today XXXX

Hi! What a cool success - they are so cute! I have 4 seed pods on 2 plants that I used your advice in your vid back then - they had a date haha. My question is this... How long do I leave them on the plant, or wait til they fall off? It seems like they have been on them over a year now - lol i am a bad judge of time though. at least a year [maybe]. i dont trust my memory 😀

I got a Venus Fly Trap growing kit. It said that I had to put the seeds inside of the “mini-greenhouse” and leave them in the fridge for six weeks. Do I have to do this? Will they still germinate even if I don’t do this?
@desertplantsofavalon
@desertplantsofavalon 5 лет назад
Hi there :-D because I have only sown seeds direct from my own plants after harvesting I have not had to put them in the fridge before but some growers do recommend that you do this if you purchase seeds, I dont think it is 100% necessary but giving them the cold treatment does help to stratify the seeds and helps encourage germination, and I think it would be best to definitely follow what it says on the growing kit and put them in the fridge for six weeks first XXXXX

Those little seedlings are SO cute! I have 3 questions: 1.Will you plant them separately? 2.How big do you allow them to get before you move them to a new home? 3. I noticed a reddish brown segment on you old schlumberge in the lower left corner of the video. I've seen that before on other Christmas cactus that I've had too. Is that a dying segment? or what is going on that causes that?

I cross polinated 4 christmas cacti and they all produced seed. So cute. I also have a seedpod on my schlumbergera x exotica (rhipsalidopsis) which I cross pollinated with a schlumbergera truncata. I'm very curious how the seedlings will turn out and if the flowers can be multicoloured or just 1 colour. Also I don't know when the seedpod is ripe.

How long does it take from seed to flower
@desertplantsofavalon
@desertplantsofavalon 4 года назад
Hi there :-D they can take a very long time to get from seed to flowering and about 5-8 years from seedling to full growth to get mature enough to flower, but it will be very rewarding when they do :-D thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER from across the Emerald Isle for a marvellous Monday XXXX

How long can the seeds be dormant, for or how long are they viable if not planted?
@desertplantsofavalon
@desertplantsofavalon Год назад
Hi Bill :-D the good news is Cactus seeds can keep for several years if they are stored in a cool and dry environment away from heat and damp, but they are at their most viable if sown within the first year as the germination rates start to decline the longer they are kept, thanks so much for watching and have a wonderful plant powered Sunday XXXX

Hi - my seed pod has been on the plant for almost 1.5 years now, there's still no sign of it going squishy nor does it feel like its ready to be pulled off. Is this normal or do you think I should just go ahead and pull it off?

Can u propagate from the woody stems?
@desertplantsofavalon
@desertplantsofavalon 4 года назад
Hi there :-D Yes you can still propagate the woody stems but they are much harder to get to root than the stem segments, and its much more successful with the stem segments, but if you have woody stems you can still try to propagate them, I have had success with rooting both :-D thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending you an abundance of love and happiness and PLANT POWER from across the Emerald Isle for a fantastic Saturday today XXXXX

Suzanne here, i have the absolute worst luck proprogating cc or tc cactus, i have tried every way on earth and watched thousands of vidoes, and not one time have i ever had one successfully GROW, i have no clue what i am doing wrong, at all, the older plants i do fine with, just NOT with cutttings unless i grow them in water, then once i put them in soil, they always shrivel and DIE, i dont get it, i been trying 40 years and still have not had one live, so this year i am doing them in orchid bark and cactus mix only, to see if that will work, and not have them shrivel and die, ugh, so i just keep buying more plants and let them grow , if i can keep them alive, i have baout 50 plants doing fine, but at some point bloom or not, they will shrivel, ugh, how can i stop that shriveling from happening??? i dont over water or under water and pot them in clay pots, so i dont get it , ughhhhhh
