My cockatiel was wheezing and died this morning - how can you save your pet bird?

My male cockatiel spent yesterday's afternoon in his cage in a shaded area in my garden in the company of my other female cockatiel. The last few weeks they have enjoyed the warmer weather of April from inside their cage where they have been able to pick from the grass in the garden, eat their seeds, drink their water and move out of the shade to bask in the sunlight. Around this period of the year I start to place my birds out of my house in the garden to give them a breath of fresh air and let them enjoy the new season. Yesterday it was sunny and warm with almost no wind. When I placed the cage back inside in the evening I noticed the male cockatiel had started making a funny noise - the same noise you can hear in the video. I called some vets but they all told me that they didn't treat birds as patients and they knew nothing about them. My male cockatiel continued the whole night making the same sound, breathing heavily, and this morning right after making this video I watched him run out of air and die of heart attack in his cage. I can't understand what has happaned to him. The female cockatiel that has always lived in the same cage beside him is doing just fine. Help me understand the reason of my bird's sudden demise!

I’m so sorry for your loss. It’s always good to have medicine. I don’t know if you can buy it online and I don’t know if this helps. My cockatiel had pneumonia and was incubated for 3 days in the vet. The Dr (she was so great) she gave me Meloxicam, Enrofloxacin, & Nystatin. I bought these from chewy. It’s always good to be prepared❤

I’m sorry about all the insensitive, know it all, comments on here. I have lost 2 cockatiels to the exact thing this year. I took them to emergent vets, probably $1k in vet bills, best avian care you can get in Ohio and it didn’t save them. The respiratory issues took them with almost no warning, less than a day. And for those who may want to shame and blame, I have an extra large flight clean flight cage that’s better than most. Nutritional deficiencies can make birds prone to fungal, bacterial, and viral infections as well as dry, dusty air and household toxins. I’m so sorry this happened to you too :(

I had the chance to show this video to a bird breeder some months after my little friend had passed away. Through the video he was able to tell me his diagnosis. He thought it was just old age, but for a more accurate evaluation he would have needed to see the bird with his own eyes. At least I got some kind of explanation, even if shallow.

This happened to me today I called the vet and they took her in and they say that she looked stressed and ill,this happened literally at night but I thought she was breathing regularly in her sleep,I woke up the next morning and found out she was still wheezing and she felt weak, but they gave me the medication and as soon as I got home I gave her the antibiotics but soon after she wheezed twice a much and twice as loud but she quieted down a little bit but I can’t tell if she was feeling any better or dying slowly, and she was doing the exact same wheeze as your bird,i didn’t know what to do

It's not being a "know at all" when you're trying to help someone out and help the birds. If you don't know that they are in the wrong cage and say something then you're just as guilty for the life they're living.

I'm so sorry for your loss, I've had some heartbreaking bird deaths over the years and I know how it feels. It's very important when you have birds to at least know where an avian vet is in your area so you have somewhere to take them in an emergency. I would strongly recommend finding one and getting a checkup done on the survivor in case there is something they both got into.

When I was a teenager I bought a cockatiel and I had no idea what I was doing, this was in the 90's and we didn't have the internet so I went by outdated books. That bird lived for nearly 20 years. I then went online in college, read everything I could, set up the perfect aviary, got everything everyone told me to get, took care of it perfectly, fed it a varied diet and all that stuff. It died after 10 years, suddenly, with no warning. Sometimes it just happens...

My bird Luna has an infection her vet Dr Emily did xray and "spotted a spot" to diagnose respiratory infection. She prescribed medicine'; I have also sanitized the cage, and given clean fresh filtered water, clean food, and turned up the heat to 25c to help her, and lots of cuddles. I have also looked up "how to give medicine to cockateels" and learned "not to put pressure on their body, but to gently hold the head by the ear spots to give syringe medicine". I hope this helps someone in the future to save their friendly little bird. I am still worried about Luna i hope I brought her in to the Dr soon enough. I am just glad my local vet office has a bird specialist. I agree "birds are common pets and all vets should be educated in bird medicine too". I am so sorry for your loss.

I have no medical education but I think the problem may have to do with the cleanliness of their habitat. It's very important to regularly clean their cage and remove dust, poop and spilled food frequently from their cage. This keeps their habitat clean which reduces the chance of them inhaling debris or becoming sick.

Could be a respiratory infection, maybe caused by a toxin, when you clean make sure cage is thoroughly dry before putting them back and remove all food and chewable toys from the cage, you should also look into getting a larger cage, I could see maybe one bird staying in here but two won’t have enough room, also id suggest cleaning more regularly, I do a bit of spot cleaning every day because cockatiels are very “dusty” and leave LOADS of dander not to mention they poop so much, also when he died he had a seizure it’s very common in cockatiels and lovebirds, I’m sorry for your loss

Cockatiels in this state need to go to the vet. At home you can put them in a banker size box. Keep in a warm location that won’t have a draft. Having a lamp near by helps but you don’t want it to be hot. You can hold them gently against your chest. And sit for a couple hours. They need warmth. Keep this up for at least 5 -7 days. I don’t put my birds outside because they can’t get away from the air currents and other critters etc. Also separate the bird from other. Give plenty of food and water and a mirror and blanket for comfort. Check on them frequently like every half hour or so. I keep the lid ajar about an inch for light to come through and so they can get out if they need to. Also chemicals can kill them in small amounts - stuff in gardens - you never know what your neighbors put down. Also don’t use a large water bowl as they could drown during their sickness. Good luck in future. Sorry for your loss.

Sorry for your lost little friend Possible it ate something a bit bigger than its normal size seeds and stuck before it’s crops (like it’s airway) The easy way would have been to give it massage like just new born baby hand feeding to help digest the food or keep the food moving down. By gently rubbing the lower chest or use a seringue with about 5ml water straight to its mouth like hand feeding a baby one.

The thing is that a lot of vets are not bird specialists so some vets who are not avian specialists will tend to not help or shy away from helping. Also birds like cockatiels tend to hide their symptoms for a long time. My guess is it could’ve been a respiratory issue. Birds like cockatiels have extremely sensitive respiratory systems so that’s why you need to keep them away from chemicals, aerosols, and stop cooking with non-stick cookware because the fumes that teflon gives off are extremely toxic to birds. Also I suggest trying to find a bigger cage (at least 50cm in every direction) for your other cockatiel unless he’s out of his cage for most of the day. All the best for you!

So sorry for your loss. I know it’s really hard to loose your baby, I wanted to say though that it looks like the cage wire is made up of the same kind of wire as chicken wire, which has strong amounts of zinc and lead. I made the same mistake I made my conure a nice big cage and suddenly he became sick due to metal poisoning. It was like he was fine then deadly sick. He is at the hospital now and so far he is getting better. I learned that stainless steel is the safest for birds
@lorenzocanteensmiscellaneo1951
@lorenzocanteensmiscellaneo1951 3 месяца назад
Thank you, it's an interesting suggestion but hardly the case this time I'm afraid. There were a couple of loose wires dangling from the top of the cage and I removed them. For the rest the cage is made of stainless steel and that's 100% safe.
@Phoenix.Sparkles
@Phoenix.Sparkles 3 месяца назад
And yet most cages are made of regular steel, which requires protective coating/paint to avoid rust, which just so happens to be lead based, all to save costs. Pretty fucked up, isn't it? Stainless steel also contains heavy metals, but they are almost entirely inaccessable, granted that the owner cleans the cage regularly.

@lorenzocanteensmiscellaneo1951
in animal stores birds live in cages that are half the size of mine. I have always wanted to get a bigger cage or build one myself in my garde but I haven't got round to doing that just yet. And during winter I often open the cage andlet them out so they are free to fly and move as they like in my house. And in this hot period I usually water them every now and then when I leave the cage in the shade outside. I think they are pretty fine and happy. P. @@lorenzocanteensmiscellaneo1951 There is absolutely no excuse to keep them in that torture cage and those stores that you mentioned should be closed down for animal cruelty. @lorenzocanteensmiscellaneo1951
@@MarioTalevski they spend most of the year in my house where they are free to get around for a good part of the day. It is only during summer and late spring that they have to spend all the time in the cage you see in the video because I need to leave the windows open or else the temperature in my house gets too high. This period lasts for about three months. For the rest of the year I keep them inside and leave the cage door open the whole afternoon. I would like to install a bigger cage in my garden just for the summer, but still I don't believe this was the cause of death of my male cockatiel.

Are you sure it’s not a female and egg bound? The following is for breathing issues but would also help any sick bird. I saw an egg on the bottom of the cage and that looks like a bird trying to lay an egg and exhausting itself. Definitely at risk of dying if the egg is not successfully expelled. It will need gentle hands, coconut oil or similar, please search RU-vid for egg bound hens there are plenty. Breathing issues- Add heat and humidity think about congestion and how to open up the airways. I use a humidifier, and an oil radiator heater. If it’s sick, weak, stressed old and struggling normal drafts can wreck havoc. Vets with avian experience are few and far between so it’s important that you are as prepared as possible and act fast. Unfortunately I have learned hard lessons. I try to keep the temp at 95 degrees and more importantly humid. Make sure the heater is in a position to raise the humidity (heat rises bringing moisture with it.) Cover the cage like a tent so the warm humidity stays in the area of the bird. I also put a couple of small drops of vet-rx (tractor supply)in the humidifier which assists in loosening mucus possibly enough for the bird to expel boogers on its own. Alternatively You can use an aquarium, a heating pad, and a wet sponge. Heating pad under aquarium cover no more than half leaving enough room for the bird room to move away from the heat, a cotton baby blanket on top of the bottom glass(Do not use the heating pad directly on the bird.

I'm so sorry about your cockatiel I had a parakeet too that died but from a different thing it's terrible to see your cockatiel die I have one alive but it's so sad to see yours die I love birds I'm sorry that you literally can't do anything maybe you should get like a larger cage for them to play and get some toys for them and fresh food that they like and some fresh water so what I usually do for my cockatiel and four parakeets they're in a different cage I changed their water and when their food is dirty I change it too and if you have enough money you can get another Cockatiel to be friends with I'm so sorry about your cockatiel it's so sad to see this it's a terrible experience for people that love pet birds like Cockatiels and parakeets that was same for me with my parakeet that died last year😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

I'll be as short and clear about it as possible: In every conceivable way, the birds living conditions were unhealthy. That doesn't mean you're a bad-guy, it means you need to learn more. Simpest place to start is going to google and searching "how do I keep my cockatiel healthy" and reading the material.

I understand some of the comments like yours, there's always room to improve and provide better living conditions for my feathered friends. The few birds I have had have always lived long and healthy as they lasted a long time. The bird that left me in this video died in a way I can't explain. The other one is doing just fine in almost 2 years.

So sad. I have birds and knowing their lungs are very delicate I give them olive leaf powder mixed in almond butter or olive oil to prevent respiratory illnesses. Do that with us humans too. Have a 30 year old goffin cockatoo been giving this for years never had lung problems. Just recently our little lilac started breathing heavy after being in a cage outside. Worry it could have been mites that could get into her lungs. Gave her olive oil and rubbed her crop downward strokes. Turned out it was impacted crop. (Learned this from chicken videos) Fine now. For 40 years we didn’t go to vets because they treat them like dogs and cats. Learned when having an infection and skin opening up put Manuka honey on it. We have plugged up holes in their crop with the thick honey. When under stress like yours was they don’t calm down. They need a safe dark warm place. Looked like a distressful situation. Been there you feel so helpless. We had to learn seat of the pants. Found out prevention is worth a pound of cure.

@Cody 04 So i kind of forced them to get on veggies and fruits but not to the point where they go hungry. If they eat it then fine. If not then you keep feeding them the mix blend seed diet that is specific for that bird.

Get your birds a better cage. It's depressing how small the cage is and how boring your birds life must be in that all day.

It's weezing because that dirty ass, tiny cage... To be blunt. (It should help you though...) Just use common sense... It was on the bottom of a dirty and small spot with no where to go. Get a big cage. Like 5x bigger for one bird and 10x bigger for two. Also buy multi vitamin drops so it builds their immune system. You will notice different color and shiny feathers after that... Also for a healthy bird they need lots of space. How would you like to be in a small room like that?
@alexv1190
@alexv1190 Год назад
Oh and let the birds out 3 hours a day at LEAST. It really messes them up mentally and they get suicidal if you don't make them happy.
@alexv1190
@alexv1190 Год назад
Oh also you need to get premium cockatiel food. I see you gave only seeds? That's why his immune system sucked. Never got vitamins or anything but fattening seeds.
@karenmcgee6026

The cage is way too small and filthy.
@lorenzocanteensmiscellaneo1951
@@alexv1190 I let them out of the cage for about half a day and have the whole room you see in the video to fly free without obstacles or dangers. As for the diet, I tried many different foods you can buy in stores for cockatiels and birds in general. They don't like them and refuse to eat them. They eat just seeds and some green leaves like green salad or spinach. Also, when I place the cage in the garden, during summer, they pick from the grass. I'm really sad they don't want to eat anything but regular seeds but that's it with them.
