Trangia 27. It’s not the smallest or the lightest but it’s one of the best for actual cooking. I bought a gas burner and use canisters since California banned denatured alcohol. I know I could use other fuel in the Trangia burner but canisters are so easy and convenient I made the switch and never looked back.

I'm old school. I still use my nesting set of four Swiss pots from Sigg and a choice of stoves based on the number of riders in the group. When traveling alone or two riders I bring one pot and my SEVA 123 white gas stove. With a larger group I have four sizes of Optimus Kerosene pressurized stoves to chose from. I also have two sets of towers for each stove so I can bring a silent or roar burner.

Mike, it is refreshing to see the kit of someone who obviously cooks on bike trips as opposed to the small titanium cups just used used to boil water to hydrate pee-prepared meals. Those meals are not prevalent in Europe, not very healthy and can become expensive on longer tours. Like you I take a gas canister stove (BRS300) and an alcohol (mini can DIY) stove that I use to make tea. I also take an Aliexpress wood stove that is the windscreen when using gas or alcohol. APG Ti bowl .8L and pan and a Lixada Ti Mug .33L., full set of spices in tiny soy sauce bottles from sushi meals. .4L olive oil is base of a lot of my cooking. I also like to grill fish and meat on the wood stove. I am intrigued and may buy a Sea To Summit X-sean bowl because the silicone and plastic bags I used to keep leftovers and foods have leakage problems. I have an Opinel 7 pocket knife but prepare food with an Opinel n.112.(20g) I also take a Joker Nessmuk knife (196g) for firewood prep. I drink water out of a Hydrapak Seeker 3L bladder that lives in my framebag, gravity fed by the Aquamira Frontier Max water filter. Good luck and health and good travels.

It's always interesting to see what others use and why. Like you I have many different cooking setups and my ride or trips help me decide which one to use. My last tour I used a homemade alcohol stove coupled with an Esbit pot because I toured mostly rural roads and fuel was easy to get at any auto parts store (HEAT in the yellow bottle) I don't drink wine but my coffee is a must. For that I use the GSI Commuter Coffee Press. I don't care for instant and this continually gives me the great tasting shot of caffeine I've needed since I was a child. Lol Thanks for sharing your cooking set ups Mike. Atb, Tony

Nice video,interesting stuff you have. I also use my military equipment I have since my duty (40 years ago) but it is still super, the water bottle fit in a aluminium cup for instance, and as I do not camp as much as you I just add a camping set I found in a sports store, it contains a large pot, a lid that act as pan and a waterkettle, i made a couple of trips with it and it was enough for my needs. the stove I use is like yours but with a ignition button so no need for matches, I have also a little alcohol stove in case there is no gas, and lately I bought a little wood stove it folds down flat and is light, I tried it at home and it worked well, of course you cannot adjust the flame, but for boiling water it works great.

Very nice presentation. Pocket Rocket stove for me and I travel with a lot of dehydrated meals. A nice long spork for the bags and good to go. Also carry a water filter for emergency's. Snow finally hit here. Take care, Al

Thank you Al. Pocket Rocket seems to be very popular in America. It's not that easy to find here in Europe though. We got hit by a blizzard last week so we have around 120 cm snow cover at the moment.

Hey Mike...yep morakniv's, can't go wrong...best ever! As far as camp cook set, the collapsibles are definitely a game changer. I've really become a fan. I prefer the gas over alcohol, as you mention, you're able to regulate the flame There is one little twist to my gear, I always carry a folded piece of aluminum foil to cook on. This helps disperse the heat a bit, eliminating hot spots. Thanks for the video Mike.

I have a kovea burner, an msr whisperlite international and the Trangia. I have gone back to using the trangia almost exclusively because I love the simplicity and the clever design. If I was doing a longer offroad motorbike tour here in Western Australia I would use the MSR if getting the alcohol for the Trangia was going to be a problem as I can use the petrol from the bike in the MSR.

My cooking setup changed a little every time I went on a tour. But I got one of those canister stoves for next time, and the squeeze filter, but I probably will use my old stainless pots.The collapsible mug intrigues me, though. And I got an Opinel knife, I might take that. I take a Swiss army knife, the Champion, because it has scissors (of course) and a can opener, but I will still take a P38, just because it weighs nothing and is cool.

I use a Keith Titanium rice cooker, a skillet, a litre mug, plate, bowl and cutlery, that are all titanium and can be cooked with. I have an MSR PocketRocket stove. I like a lightweight cutting mat, that can be rolled up and doubles as a place mat and an MSR Chef's knife.

I have been using Trangia since the early 1980s. I have several different sets. I'm happy with it. Might try the burner you suggest though.

Mike, a great info session. I don't camp but can use the info for other situations such collapsible mugs to avoid Styrofoam waste. I await your video on foods to tote around. Don't forget the coconut milk. 😊

Haha! I'm not sure I'm able to do a video about food since the supply varies so much depending on which country you're touring in. For instance Mexican food can be found literally everywhere around here, but hardly nowhere in Italy for example. Plus everyone may have different preferences. But I might be able to do a video on what food I typically bring on my bike tours here in Scandinavia.

Hej Mike Trangia for me, about 30 years old now. With the mini triangle if I’m going lightweight. I also have a Jetboil copy if I’m in a hurry. The snow lasted about 4 hours on the ground last week , one of the harshest winters we’ve had in a long time, haha. Take care, Ed
@BikeTouringMike
@BikeTouringMike 3 года назад
Haha, 4 hours! When we woke up on Saturday the snow level was above our windows on one side of the house. Eventually managed to get out through the only door that wasn't covered with snow, our bedroom balcony door. Then I had to crawl for about 5 -10 minutes to be able to get to the driveway where I had strategically placed the shovel the night before. We shoveled snow for must of the weekend. Since then I've been shoveling snow for at least an hour every day after work just to catch up. We were supposed to get about 25-30 cm of snow this weekend, but now they seem to have changed the forecast a bit. Oh well, we'll manage with the 120 cm we already have I guess. ;-)
@edlaws6867
@edlaws6867 3 года назад
Be careful if you’re shovelling snow off he roof, but I suppose it’s only a couple of cm from the roof to the snow on the ground.
@BikeTouringMike
@BikeTouringMike 3 года назад
Yeah, it's not that big of a fall. And it is a really soft landing. In fact I've channeled my inner child a couple of times the last week and jumped off the roof. It's really fun until you realize that you're stuck and have to dig yourself out of the snow with your hands. Usually takes a couple of minutes to get loose.

Can you cook in that sea to summit pot? If yes, dose it leave some kind of a taste in water or food?

Us English are dreadful at other languages, so this is no way a criticism; but it was funny to hear you say 'me and the misses". How easy have you found it to find resealable gas canisters, like the one you showed, in other countries?
@BikeTouringMike
@BikeTouringMike 3 года назад
Haha! Yeah, every now and then some Swenglish is making it into my videos :-) In Europe you can find them everywhere. Sports stores, gas stations and so on. There's a chain called Decathlon that is found all over Europe. They are usually are safe bet to find them. I usually head for the closet Decathlon once I've landed in another country to pick up a canister. Don't know about the US, other than I know that they can be found at REI.
@derekperkins7343
@derekperkins7343 3 года назад
@@BikeTouringMike Ok cheers for that. I've always taken them to France by car because I've never found them for sales in supermarkets- they have the blue non-resealable, but I'll look out for Decathlon. I'd wondered if a spirit stove might be a safer bet.

Great stuff as usual but I really need you to tell me how to pronounce "Öhlins" the motorbike shock absorber company. Sounds silly I'm sure but here in the states no-one knows. They make shocks for bicycles too so it's kind of related to your topics.

Dumb question from a newbie. Was the first stove set up made specifically for bike packing or was it just a backpacking kit?? Thanks, I really enjoy your vids!
@BikeTouringMike
@BikeTouringMike 3 года назад
Hi James! There is no such thing as a dumb question. The first stove set isn't specifically made for bikepacking. I think it's rather made for backpacking. But most gear created for backpacking has the same goals in mind (to be light weight and compact) it works really well for bikepacking as well. In fact most camp stoves out there are probably made with backpacking in mind.
