I work on a dairy farm. Keep an eye out for when she doesn’t come up for feed and goes off to be by herself. You will know she is close when her teats look swollen and maybe she will start leaking milk. But also her vulva will become very springy and she will lose her plug (this can happen like a week before she calves). Please make sure to have someone you can call in case she does have trouble calving heifers often have more trouble the first time. And make sure you see the baby nurse off of her ideally within the first 5 hours. That first colostrum is vital.

I would defiantly say she is bred usually heifers start bagging 1 month or more before due date. Her udder thought does have a long way to go though, but every heifer and cow is different. So excited for you!! Also it is usually pretty easy to tell when they are going to calve.

She is definitely pregnant. You might need to milk her some if she produces excess for her calf. She also has a high chance to reject her calf especially given its her first calf. So be prepared for that. She looks about 3-4 weeks out from calving. Her udder will get much bigger and you can watch her vulva for swelling. It will get swollen and may pink up right before calving. You can get calving alerts that attach to her tail and tell you when she's in labor if you really want it. Best of luck!

I breed my own Holsteins, if she hasn't shown any signs of coming into heat, that's a surefire sign she's bred. I've always done blood tests for pregnancy to confirm.
@cindyshaw7364
@cindyshaw7364 3 года назад
Also, when they're close to their calving date, they like to nest and they like to isolate themselves, you'll definitely see her bag up a lot more when she's close. 1st calf heifers may need some assistance depending on the size of the calf. A rule of thumb for if they need assistance is if there isn't enough progression 30-45 minutes from 1st signs of pushing, or notice that the calf is in the wrong position such as being breech and coming out rear legs first instead of normally presenting head first with the two front legs. Hope this helps!

Dairy cows often produce more milk than their babies need, as far as I know. Are you going to milk her? It might be fun to drink milk from your own cow!
@floras_farm2225
@floras_farm2225 3 года назад
Yup they do, they can actually sometimes make their calfs sick because of all the milk they have and the calfs drink too much, but you need to milk them the day the calf is born or the day after to make sure they keep enough for both, animals will hold back milk for their babies and when their also feeding the babies you dont milk them out completely

Congrats!!! The one thing that would concern me the most is the chance the calf might be too big. How things normally work with cattle is different bulls tend to throw different birth weights, and normally heifers are bred to heifer bulls (bulls that throw lower birth weights) to reduce calving complications. Since you don't really know the bull she was bred to, it may be a good idea to keep a close eye on her and have a vet in mind just in case the calf needs to be pulled, which is what happens the majority of the time with heifers and too large of calves. Chances are she'll be fine, but it's just something to keep in the back of your mind! She looks to be a few weeks away, but one thing to watch for when she gets close is she'll carry her tail out and to the side, maybe even wring it back and forth for an hour or two before she starts calving.

Warch her tail bone, cows spines lift when they are getting ready to calve. They will also stick their tail out behind them and walk around. She is definitely pregnant! 😁 We raise beef cattle so I’ve seen some of these signs before. She’s definitely starting to bag up (fill up with milk) but it does look like she has a little ways left to go. But then again all cows are different and I’m pretty sure you have said she’s never been bred before so the signs might not be as clear because her body hasn’t been through these changes before. Super exciting!! 😁 Some signs of her calving would be her loosing her mucus plug ( basically a big strand a discharge) this means she’s lost that “plug” and she will calve anytime in the next 24 hours to a week. Some other signs is her vulva getting really swollen and her losing her ligaments. Basically when they lose their ligaments, their hips are just getting wider for them having a baby! Also she may want to be off by herself and away from any other of your animals. Another fun fact is that cows love to calve in storms 😂🙄 it’s a big hassle but it’s true! 😂 I’m so excited for you and I hope these facts and tips help! Let me know if you want any more. 😊

***This is with my experience with dairy cattle! Not all cattle are the same! Just like people! *** Congrats!!!! Since she is a Holstein she will most likely won’t have the motherly instinct to take care of the baby. (Most dairy cows don’t, that’s why dairy farmers take the calves) You’ll have to take the baby and bottle feed it and then milk her so she won’t get mastitis! Hope that helps you!
@jessix4206
@jessix4206 3 года назад
Actually Holsteins have a lot of motherly instinct. Farmers take the calves because they need the milk. If they allow the babies to stay they won’t get the milk. So they take them.
@diamondtahomestead
@diamondtahomestead 3 года назад
@@jessix4206 That’s actually not true I use to show Holsteins through FFA I graduated 4 years ago. I didn’t want to milk them but had to because every single one of them tried to kill their own babies. I’ve had 6 of them and like I said every single one of them wouldn’t let nurse I used their milk to feed their babies and didn’t keep anything because I hate milk 😂 Beef cattle on the other hand are great mothers and that’s what I raise. Never working with dairy again for that reason I can’t sit there and bottle feed babies all the time.

Actually that’s not true my uncle is a farmer they do have motherly instinct the reason they take it away is so the farmer can still milk it. If they let the mother keep it they can’t milk the cow for 6 months so they don’t have any income. People say that because the vegans will attack the farmers.

She is bred. We have highland cattle and these are most of the signs they will show. She isn’t quite ready yet though. Her bag will fill up a lot more leading up to it. But signs of her being really close, is her vulva will elongate and become a little puffy, and her tail ligaments will become looser to the point you can slide your hand (vertically) between her tail and pin bone. Another way you can tell she is bred is her right side is bigger which is where they carry the calf - left is the rumen. You can remember that by “Right is Runt, Left is Lunch”. Most important thing for you to know, is as soon as that calf is born, within two hours it needs to be up and milking. The first milk they get is the colostrum and if they don’t get that they will likely die. So have some colostrum frozen from a cow, or a colostrum replacer on hand. Congrats, and good luck!

She is pregnant.I live on a farm with over 100 beef cattle.All heifers are different so she could have it in the next week or so or maybe even earlier than that.Like everyone else is saying she will start to bag up.Her vuvla will “crown” (fancy word for saying swell) and discharge will start to come out before it will happen,don’t get exited because discharge could come out for a week and nothing happens.On that day she starts to push make sure you are watching her closely but not making her feel stressed.When she starts pushing closer together make sure to grab a pillow,blanket,and some snacks cause it could take up to 7-10 hours before calving.A few weeks ago I had a heifer start pushing in the evening so I got her up and put her in a pen and watched a for a few mins and checked on her before I went to bed,I woke up 5:30 the next day and she just had it (probably 5-10 mins before I got there).Hers was a smooth calving process but I had to make sure she was okay since we had a few stillborns this year from heifers.If you smell anything funky be prepared to have someone to call just in case the calf might be stuck.Please feel free to ask any questions.Thank you and have a great rest of your day!

hey Cindy my family and i are cattle farmers and she looks very pregnant i recommend putting her in a straw pen more towards the end of her pregnancy because if the calves umbilical cord hits the dirt there is a high chsnce it can get a bug called crypto it is very dangerous for calves. also just be careful as some cows become very protective :) . Good luck with the calf though. as it is her first there is a high chance she will reject it but first time mums can also be great at caring for their baby its just one of those things. just watch out for yellow green or white muck when the baby is born it can be a sigh it is hungry has crypto of just very ill . dont worry if the first few days it is yellow though . Hope Delilah will have a lovley healthy calf

I figured love was in the air when she escaped 😉. Udder development is a huge sign your heifer is going to freshen! Also, your cows “bloat” because the way they digest food in their rumen is through fermentation! Cows can actually get a disease called Bloat, but they will be very sick if that happens.

Someone once told me about how when he was a kid, the family cow would run away to find a bull every time she went onto heat, and no matter what they did, she would always find some way to escape.

Yup lol I’m a beef farmer and work on a cow calf farm, and CONGRATULATIONS!! 😂 🍰🎂🥳. She’ll probably bag up a lot when she’s getting close and have excess mucus but its a hit or miss on using that to date the calving date. Don’t know much about holsteins and calving, but a heifer bred to a bull meant to breed seasoned cows can produce bigger calves. I’m sure you already know all this crap but its probably a good idea to keep an eye on her just incase the bull throws big calves. I usually think it’s pretty obvious if they are having trouble.

Hey!! I have 19 cows and we have had slot of pregnancies! She definitely looks pregnant to me normally they start bagging up a ground a month before they actually calve but another thing you would want to look for is discharge and they’re bag will really start to get hard when they are producing milk! The teets will also get more swollen and fuller as the milk is being produced Delilah looks pregnant to me. So I would just keep a close watch on it and also something you can look for is if the tail head goes down sinks really far down into their hind quarters about a month before their due date!! that’s how you know the babies getting in position so this is just some helpful hints that I use on my cows when I know that when they’re pregnant!! I hope that helps!!
