Hello my artistic friends! YOU voted for it, so here you go! I'm excited to show you my crazy colored pencil collection. I've actually downsized (kinda)! You'll see some familiar favorites like Holbein and Faber Castell Polychromos, but you'll be surprised to find Prismacolor (say what?!) and some new pencils you may not have heard of or tried yet! This was a great video Jane,so great to get to see your extensive pencil collection and to hear your reasons for choosing differnt brands and types and to be able to talk to you (and others) in the live chat too. Derwent is the main stay of my own pencil collection,I actually have every range/trype of pencil they make,but they have retired a lot of their ranges now. When I want to try a new brand or type of pencil I tend to buy a starter set of 12,then once I'm used to them I buy others open stock and build up a collection in that way. I also love Caran D' Arche's range of pencils too. BSut have other brands too. I think absolute favourites are the Derwent Inktense pencils and the Caran D'Arche Suprercolour pencils. I have a mixof normal pencils (oil or wax based) an water colour pencils as well. I also love metallic pencils and the Holbein metallics are realy good. Some ranges/Brands are really expensive in sets, but I find it's alitle cheaper to buy them open stock if you can.I loe the foldes you keep all your pencils in,bright and colourful like you!. I have a tallboy with large shallow draws in it I put thin foam in the base of the draws and store my pencils in this and each draw is labelled with the name/brand and type of pencils.I have nver actually counted how many I have, but it's a lot!!,built up over a few years. Can't wait to see part two of this coloure pencil epic!! P.S loved the spring manicure and your eye make up too.

My favorites are my Luminescence and my Lightfast I also love love love my light 36 set of Holbein (I’m adding to them all the time 😉). My favorite watercolor pencils are my Caran D’ Ache SupraColor. I own the whole set and I use them all the time. They are my go to when I play with watercolors. I love working with colored pencils so I tend to buy a lot of pencils so no I don’t think you have a lot of pencils. The only ones I don’t own are the Polychromos. At the time I went with Prismacolor (what a mistake) in the beginning they were good but over the years the quality, like you and many other artists have said. The quality of their products has diminished greatly ☹️. So I may once I get my set of Holbein completed treat myself to a set of Polychromos . I love my colored pencils and my inks. I can't do without the Faber Castel Polychromos. They are my first go to. However I don't want to miss the Holbein either. I also have the Luminance and the Prismacolor. The newer set of the Prisma. I got them to augment the colors of the other ones. I love monochromatic drawings so I have the FC Monochromatic set . Full sets of graphite pencils and charcoal of FC, Staedtler and Generals. I also like the Derwent drawing pencils, the tinted charcoal and the Graphitint. I think there is a place where one should not waste their most expensive supplies. And that is for the scetchbook or tinker drawings that are not being sold. The sketchbooks are closed for the most part so nothing fades anyway. So it's alright to use lower end pencils like FC red line, staedtler, Prismacolor or yes, even Crayola. For watercolor I have Schminke and for travel I got a cheap set from Hobby Lobby I think it's called Artist's choice? But they perform similar. For travel pencils and lower end colors will do. I don't want my art supplies being stolen.

As art supply hoarder, it's definitely not too much. I get what you're saying about the Prismacolor breakage, but I went back to using about a week ago, and I'm blown away about how smooth they lay down.

Your old Prismacolor collection is super cool! I have one of my own, colored pencils that one of my mom's ex-stepdads gave her when she was younger, and she'd held onto for years before passing them down to me. Most of mine are pretty beat up, teeny tiny, or the cores have come unglued from their casings, but I make do with them well enough on the rare occasion I use them. They're more sentimental to me at this point than anything else. I really wish Prismacolor would release a line that's better than their premier pencils in overall quality bc I get a lot of off-center pencils, cracked or splintering wood, and experience a significant amount of breakage compared to every other "artist grade" set. It would be great if they basically just re-released the old ones but in an "updated" set, maybe with added lightfast ratings, and like I said, the higher quality materials.

Wait Part One? Wow, these are already a lot of color pencils. I have a few but not this extensive. :) Makes me want to take out all my color pencils and see what I have, most of them are tucked away. I mainly use my Faber Castell Polychromos color pencils.

Ok I’m glad I didn’t miss much of the beginning during live. The Derwent Lightfast are nice and I have all 100. I always wanted to try Pablos, but they are not easy to get in Canada. I would love to do portraits with coloured pencils. Your artwork is beautiful.

I just got the Derwent Lightfast 76 set this week. So far I’m enjoying them more than the handful of Holbeins I’ve acquired. Maybe it’s just my brain tricking me since they’re less expensive, but they’re fantastic so far. Your art is fantastic, I love how colorful so much of it is!

Is there to much , NO theres never to much ..i think the more the better.. I like the woodless color pens i want to get some... i love all the sets im in the process of getting my collection together ..i can't always buy the big sets like i want but the ones i get are good to learn with .. To add a more positive comment, a super compact coloured pencil option is the Pentel Multi 8 lead holder and/or the Pentel Arts 8 Colour Automatic pencil. The Multi has ballpoint pen and graphite options. If you have two of these, you can have an assortment of 16 colours/pens in a space foot print roughly equivalent to two Sharpies. I keep a small notebook and these in my purse at all times so I have no excuse to not be able to do some sketching while waiting in line or whatnot.

Your colored pencil artwork is beautiful! Prismacolors have gone up and down in quality. I think the ones now are better than they were but not as nice as in the beginning. I find the new ones don't break much. Maybe I just take better care of them. The cases that they make for pencils now are better than the old tin that I kept them in before.

I was afraid I was overdoing it with my colored pencil collection until I saw yours. I don't have enough! 🤣🤣🤣 After hearing you rave multiple times about the Holbein, I was excited to hear Dick Blick would carry them. While the sets seem kinda pricey, the open stock is still cheaper than Caran D'Ache Luminance, so I think I'll give them a try soon.

I also have chronic pain issues and fatigue, so I can't do just strictly colored pencil! I like to paint and use mixed media to make things go faster and easier on the hands :)

Yes, the Holbein’s are hard to pass up because of those pastels for sure, but I also love their neons and metallics. Their metallics are some of the best. Haha I’m not even sure why they call it music television anymore

Yeah it hasn't been music television in decades. Last I ever saw it, they had nothing but reality tv shows. Now if I want to watch music videos I just watch them on youtube lol.

I have vintage Prismacolor too with some Berol including doubles of the first 48. I have been considering the set on Amazon that has been fluctuating in price if it goes down again because I only need about 20 pencils.

Yes! I actually tried them in my review of the “new” Holbein’s when they were released in the US. I want to do a dedicated video on it because it’s truly a unique product.

Yes the Prismacolor do have some issues with quality control. However I just love the way the give a paint effect when you blend them, so creamy to use. I sill think they feel better than luminance and the Lightfast to use so I buy open stock and choose carefully so far so good. If I am doing an old masters piece they are the ones I use. Thanks for the peek into your collection when it comes to art supplies you can never have too many lol...

It's amusing to hear artists say these were the top artists standard of colored pencils. I think however in fact they were the only artist colored pencils available in the US for a long time. There was also a set called Karisma Color which ran parallel to Prisma. Price range was the same but we're discontinued. The same is true for Crayola pencils for kids. That was mostly the only choice for kids in Portland in the 90. I started College then, needed a few colors and that's really all they had in Portland then. I was surprised that there were so few choices for the US market.

I had to rewind and watch the part where you said that the Polychromos have lots of skin tones and the Pablos lack in those twice. I use maybe about 10 pencils from my full set of Polychromos while the 80 set of Pablos always has the exact color that I need for wildlife, pets or portraits. Well, except for the dark indigo in the Polychromos. Gorgeous color! I guess we view color very differently! That's so fascinating to me.

Perhaps I need to check out your artwork and see what colors you’re using for Pablos. I guess what I meant was obvious skin tones. Sometimes skin tones can be a number of different colors reflecting light or undertones, so there’s probably more there than I even realize. It’s been a while since I’ve used them.

Ok. Didn't know you had repurchased a set of Prismacolor. I have been subbed to you for a long time and remember when you got rid of your Prisma's. I remember that video. LOL I have a love/hate thing with Prismacolor. For the most part once I got a sharpener that worked well with them I had less issue with them, however I am someone who likes to layer and layer, so these do not work well for me in that regard. I do use them for their bright, opaque properties, usually using them interchangeably with oil based pencils (namely Polychromos - my favorites) and less frequently on their own. I grew up during the same time period as you, and yes neon was heavily promoted! Those days were the best! Thanks for sharing your awesome collection of pencils!

Thank you for following my silly ass all these years! Yes, I took the plunge at another set of Prismas. I oddly missed them. For all the reasons you mentioned, that’s why I had issues with them too. At this point it’s kind of hit or miss with them.

Oh my god…..ur eye make up is STUNNING! 😱❤️ btw I have been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. I’m 24 years old and have a one year old. So I’ve been struggling with depression and I actually have fallen in love with the adult coloring community! I have some bad days with my depression because I cannot color as long as I may want to because of my arthritis. It mainly attacks my feet tho so sitting in a hot bath soaking my feet while watching amazing people like yourself brings me happiness! ❤️😊

Just a suggestion, for your condition, aquarell pencils will be more suitable because it's not straining for your hands. I love the faber-castell albrecht durer and the museum aquarelle from caran dache

Would love a video showing if the Holbein pencils have any unique colors that other colored pencil sets don't have. I have so many sets of colored pencils already. Would be nice to know any unique colors so I could just buy those colors individually from Blick. Enjoyed watching your video and just subscribed. Like others have already commented.....Love the way you did your makeup!!!!

Question for you... What sharpener do you recommend for Holbeins? I've not found one to give me a really nice point.

I’ve recently bought a Carl custom cc2000, and you can find it on Amazon for about $20. It’s a manual crank sharpener, but doesn’t leave any grip marks on the pencil. Also a handheld one with a good point is the KUM Long point sharpener with 2 holes: one creates the long point on the shaft and the other refines the tip to make it as pointy as you like. Hope that helps!

I have 6 sets. With using the Holbein I have to be careful because they aren’t ASTM or Blue Wool tested. Many of the colors are 2 or one star which breaks my heart. So I don’t use the one star one and currently am testing them. Of course FC has some that aren’t lightfast and even Luminance. That is why there aren’t as many pinks that are lightfast. The Lightfast Derwent are beautiful but I wish that there were more gorgeous pinks but they and Luminance really leaped out with doing portraits.

I was using the Pilot Eno pencils for my bullet journal, and was finding that the colours I was using were fading. Fast enough that I would see a difference between the previous month and the new one when I was setting up the pages for a new month. So within a few weeks. :-< And this is a journal that is always indoors, with pages exposed to indoor lighting for at most a week or two before I've moved on to different pages. I just grabbed my journal book from two years ago to check. Everything is still legible, but when I grabbed the same colours to test and compare, newly laid down lines were notably darker/richer than the old ones. The journals are on Fabriano grid notebook paper. I eventually got fed up with it and switched to Col-Erase. It's annoying to have to sharpen them instead of having the nice sharp mechanical leads, but the colours seem to be lasting better. I didn't use all the colours in my bullet journal, but experienced it with the purple, green, dark blue, and red. The purple seemed to fade the worst, but I also used that one in a way I'd notice the most.

Okay jane I have a question and I reached out to Koh I noor and they have not responded so can you tell me I bought the 144 set and there is 10 colors from the chart that are not included and I dont know why like light yellow, beige ect. They have a 2 * next to these 10 colors hopefully u can tell me do I need to order a different set can I get them open stock.

Gosh, I have no idea. I feel bad I didn’t even know they had a 144 set of colored pencils! They’re a bit confusing with their information out there though. (EDIT: so just read on another comment that Harry from The Art Gear Guide has a blog post about the 144 set, and it may have some information about those colors too!).

be careful :c the color eno are not only super fugitive, but they are meant to do so. i've seen sad stories of sketches done and sold at conventions with these, and then dissapearing in a month or less u_u they really aren't meant for coloring (unless you are just doing it for yourself, sketches that will never leave your shelves)

Well at least you mentioned Crayola's my favorite pencil. I think they're great. Not all of us can collect expensive sets of colored pencils. You won't use all those in your lifetime.
