I had this with a mare who was quite new in our stable. I had riding lesson on her and she constantly tried to buck her riders off und RUN. The vet said everything was okay with her, her saddle fitted perfectly and we used the right bit. She just wanted to run and be wild. So she tried to buck me off, I almost fell, my trainer was panicking and I was like "when she wants to run then she has to." So I gave her the lead, she galloped like crazy and when I felt her getting calmer I galloped her on both sides, then changed to trot, galloped again and got back to walk. Since then I loved to ride her and she behaved great with me - even though she tried to buck others off - she never tried to do it with me and you could see she really liked it when I was on her

@Student Mackynze Wolfe I think she was afraid because it was a new horse, I am not the best rider (especially at that time) and the horse has bucked others of before but no other horse in the stable was available at that time

So glad to see that you didn't just go straight for a super strong bit like many others do when their horse is too hot/have lots of energy. Stronger bits should never be the quick fix solution to strong horses. Yeah you might be able to get more control or stop your horse easier with a stronger bit, for some that is enough and it is considered a fix, tho it is so far from that.. you haven't really solved the problem, you've just hidden it through a bit that would cause pain if fought. People should know how to work through problems and be patient instead of going to quick fixes. You're an great example, so happy to see you two's progress! Keep on the good work ^^

imo hackamores in general just arent great, espically the ones that are the most common in english riding. The shank is so fucking huge. It really does create alot of pressure on the nose which a lot of horses cant handle
@WestButWayWorse
@WestButWayWorse 4 года назад
I completely agree. I almost always use a 2 peice bit like a snaffle (don't hate me if I'm wrong). If I could I wouldn't use a but but most of the horses I ride would take off
@milliecentmatheson4159
@milliecentmatheson4159 4 года назад
My horse always used to take off with me on him and sometimes I'm almost glad he did because he made me the rider I am today but the last time he took off I just let him run, but when he started to slow down on a straight up hill I kicked him on until he was so out of breath and since then he has never taken off out of naughtiness or because he is strong. He now only takes off if he is scared shitless. And when he is scared shitless, I let him run till he has to stop because he is a flight animal. Obviously I try to calm him down and I pat and stroke him, tell him it's okay and let him know he doesn't have to be scared of being pulled about because I was just comforting him and getting him to trust me. Then I moved on to desensitization to me making noise with the whip. I started on the ground and then bare back and now we are gathering sheep together and he loves it. I have sheep so it worked out. I tried for so long to try find what he likes and one day it just clicked. He always pinned his eare and wanted to go after the sheep and I was encouraging him to go. He is such a good horse now and I love him even more than when I first got him, and loved him a lot.

When you said: 'We tried so many different bits.' I was like: 'Gurll... Mhmmmmm.' And then when you said: 'I tried him in a hackamore.' I was like: 'Gurrllll yesssss.' (not because Im against bits but because everyone knows that using a stronger bit when your horse is misbehaving is, well, wrong. So I was really happy to see you looking for what was best for your horse! I really respect you for that. Its incredible) 💕

This Hacklamores Are Not *Kinder* then bits.. im Sorry but everything is cruel if you use it wrong. bits Are also in one way better for the horse. Bc Pressure and realise is so clear for the horse. But if your going to ride bittless ropehalters Are the best💕🐎And they Are not so strong as hacklamores :)
@caitlinpadgett-pararider5037
@caitlinpadgett-pararider5037 5 лет назад
I was like Yess bitless but then instantly I was like ooh no bitless is NOT for him. I'm pro bitless but I understand some horses prefer to have their rein pressure directed to their tongue, over being directed to their face, and vice versa. My mare hates tongue pressure but is great with face pressure (bitless) my other boy hates both face and tongue pressure, but he's okay to go bridleless so we just do that. Bitless is not always the better option, especially in strong setups like hackamores. I'd much rather se a horse light and responsive in a snaffle than having their hackamore pulled and pulled.
@makaylagracy

I've been here almost since the first video with Owen! It's absolutely insane how far you guys have come along! I actually got my first horse, a rescue, over a year ago! While we're going to be selling him soon, to no fault of his own as he's a little angel now, I'm shocked at our growth! I bought him, his name is Atlas, as this scrawny sad looking horse, we couldn't tell his breeding(now he's very obviously Thoroughbred) but it wasn't like he was emaciated. Within a couple months he was up to a good weight to start riding and ultimately this is where the issues surfaced. It was obvious someone had been nasty to him, he was fairly nervous on the ground and under saddle he was terrified, I remember how he constantly tried to bolt under me or buck me off just because he thought I would hurt him. For the first six months I rode him the fastest I would go was a slow trot, both because I was concerned about him bolting and I wanted him to trust me. I got thrown countless times and always had to be aware of exactly what I was doing so I wouldn't scare him, when I first asked for a canter, very cautiously, he was perfect and soft listening to me eagerly and within several weeks after that I trusted him to gallop full speed and come right back to me! Our trust has grown exponentially and my friends even call me the crazy horse tamer XD Even now he has trust issues with other people and fusses if anyone picks up his hooves but me, I've easily become his human and I'm sure he'll be perfect for anyone wanting a bit of work to earn the most loyal gelding I've ever known! And recently I bought a little rescue Arabian, he's estimated 5-6 years old, he came to me very, very skinny, almost emaciated, I'm thrilled to say he's almost to a healthy weight now! I know from his sale video he is incredibly green broke, not a buck to him and insanely intelligent, I'm hoping he'll be my forever horse as he simply has so much to learn!

I’ve ridden several horses with a large canters in the past, and my most recent horse that i had to ride (which she got sold sadly, i’m gonna miss her a lot) had the largest canter so far. they’re really tiring when first learning how to move with them but once you get used to it it’s so nice! she also had such a bouncy trot that posting was really difficult at first. and her canter was so big, that she would get so excited and start galloping all over the arena and wouldn’t listen to my cues to slow down. but i just love how when riding a new horse, the rider and the person find each other’s movements and how they work. it’s pretty magical.

+Claire Eventing I think you’ve done a fantastic job with him Claire! And it’s only been a year! I’m literally almost in the exact same position. A mare was given to me that was “ridden but not broke”, approx 15 years old Paint (no idea where she came from or past training), and hadn’t been handled in 3-5 years. She was very skittish but FAR from dangerous. It took months for me to able to catch her without her being terrified. Every time it was like she was expecting something bad to happen or to be struck in the face. It broke my heart. Fast forward to now, she’s doing Dressage (believe it or not!) and is an absolute super star! We believe she used to be a barrel racer because this girl could go all out and make the tiniest circle you’ve ever seen! She had all the problems Owen did, VERY heavy (like you’re carrying their body weight), bolting off, couldn’t walk calmly, nervous, etc. The only difference would be that she didn’t buck or anything and stayed in the same bit to this day (the HS Sensogan French-Link Snaffle, 16 mm). **NOT meant to be hate, just two completely different horses :)** Now, we’re best buds and is an absolute pleasure to ride. It’s gotten to the point where she’ll do pretty much anything I ask but when my trainer or assist trainer get on, she’s not as focused or willing. Never nasty but “plays stupid” I guess you could say. 😂 All that you and Owen have accomplished has been a team effort for you two and your admirable patience! He is going to be fantastic in whatever he does! This great example of a horse that is going to be a super star but wasn’t “picture perfect” in the beginning. Beautiful horse and beautiful rider! I wish y’all the best and can’t wait to watch y’all’s journey. 😁

Awh, it’s amazing to see how you’ve come on! We bought our mare in January and she arrived as a unbroken 3 ( almost 4) year old cob mare! She’s now 4 (will be 5 in April) and she is backed and loves going out for canters on the tracks! She has taken it all in so well and we have started to school her more as the winter is here and it gets dark early. She is getting ridden 4-6 times a week mostly schooling and then hacks on weekends for her to relax! I can’t wait until we start taking schooling more seriously and getting her conformation nice and managing to get her on the bit in flatwork and then jumping bigger fences (we already pop little cross poles in the school like 1 time every 1-2 weeks) :)

You've done a great job with him. Congratulations!! Take it all as a learning curve. The 2 of you learning about each other and what works and what doesn't. You've accomplished a lot since you first started, take each day as it comes, learn 1 thing new everyday about Owen, and you'll do just fine. I have a lot of faith in you, as does a lot of your followers. Stay strong, keep smiling, and remember, There Has Never Been A Dream With An Expiration Date! All the best from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

Absolutely wonderful video. you and him have come so far since the first ride. When you do your first trial with him, start at novice-it seems like he respects the bigger fences.
