Today, I ask you the audience do you think I should sell my Red Komodo? My career has taken many turns and I am thankful for all the experiences that have led to here. However now between my changes in video production to the acquisition of RED by Nikon. Moving to Blackmagic almost seems inevitable due to the performance to cost ratio.

I wasn't a believe of the Full Frame, but when they had that $1100 off sale, I pulled the trigger and I'm starting to realize how nice it is to have that extra space to re-frame after I shoot.

You bring forward a number of interesting points. You mentioned moving away from narrative towards corporate or industrial work, which aligns with the Canon or Sony profiles. Are you considering either Sony or Canon to suit that workflow? The robust features that set these cameras apart include exceptional autofocus and a wide variety of recording formats, which are lacking on the both the Blackmagic and KX models. Marketwise, future revenue will be challenging for camera operators. Trending, advertising markets are shrinking, and the narrative market has become oversaturated and competitive. Being in a safe financial position is the larger priority. Sometimes, holding onto equipment that isn't generating billable hours can hinder career focus and adaptation. Income viability is the center of discussion, as we are all learning that the camera purchase doesn't directly translate to revenue. In your situation, owning cameras from three different manufacturers can create ownership anxiety, especially if the image quality is considered similar. The Blackmagic speaks to the economy of ownership. The KX is specifically designed for professional cinematographers and studios engaged in high-end productions. As discussions about different camera models intensify, the hidden costs associated with owning a true cinematography setup are becoming increasingly apparent and require careful consideration. Fair to ask, do I really that buy that much camera only to be separated by a margin of picture quality? I am a RED Komodo and Sony FX30 owner. The Sony, I move faster and quicker. I stay less nervous about nailing focus. Small and discreet. The RED is reserved for my narrative aspirations. Good luck with everything. Enjoy the content.

Those cameras are all over the place. I'd like to see the final cut with all 3. I shoot Canon C70's and ordered the C400. Just the thought of all those looks although similar would have me dreading the color correcting. Curious.

@ReachFilms Месяц назад
Yeah I wouldn’t say it’s going to be easy, but I’ve created matching to Red log converted to rec 709 luts for all 3 cameras so I can monitor all in the same color space. I have to handle the edit and color on this so I am happy to take the time and see what’s possible. The fx30 is really the only one I think will take the most time especially as I won’t be filming in raw as I’ve kind of given up on the whole transcoding ProRes raw to CDNG as it just takes too much time

They are all great cameras! Especially if the type of work you do can utilize what they bring to the table. I’m just not doing enough of that at this point in my life but I love the camera! That’s why it’s so hard of a decision. I was literally one of the first people to get my hands on a stormtrooper they even told me I was the first to respond to the stormtrooper email Jared sent out. From the time I sold my stormtrooper model till getting a black one it was less than a year so I’ve now owned a Komodo for about a few months shy of four years as well!!

I would say this to you if you had the red and the Black Magic in front of you and somebody said these are both the same price. The Black Magic is the same price as a Komodo, which would you buy and why if they were the same price because I think where you’re going in this is you’re being logged into a camera system based on the price of the camera, and that may be cloud in your judgement in terms of the benefits of choosing one over the other if they were both the same price and it would cost you the same amount to buy a new Black Magic camera a new Kota red which one would you choose?
@ReachFilms
@ReachFilms Месяц назад
Yeah it’s hard if they were the same price I’d probably choose the Komodo, it’s an interesting way of putting it. The problem is they aren’t the same price and with the blackmagic on sale being 80%+, less and full frame it makes the decision harder
@anthonyrock5039
@anthonyrock5039 Месяц назад
Great point! I think I’d ask the cameras were the same price, people would buy what they need vs what they want. There would also be a lot less cameras out there that are almost the same as each other as they would be redundant.

Netflix approved actually mean camera hit a mark of quality and specs that hit Netflix standards. If you look at the list of approved cameras they are all great cameras. Not sure why you think it's a marketing thing. The Komodo is great but if you need AF and lighter media options then you have choices. The C400 looks good one paper and dynamic range is the only question that needs to be answered . Also, the C70 look good these days. The BM doesn't have AF so you are getting the same type of cine camera with the BM6K. Good luck. Great video.
@ReachFilms
@ReachFilms Месяц назад
Pretty much all the cameras that are Netflix approved are good that’s not where I’m Getting at and I’ll touch on that in a video soon. There are just a crazy amount of cameras out there and some are great but aren’t on the Netflix list. It’s great marketing to say you have a Netflix approved camera but depending on what kind of work you are doing clients may or may not care. So get the best camera for your needs and what you do.

@contentm3893
@contentm3893 Месяц назад
@@ReachFilms I don't think clients know about Netflix approved cameras except agency work. If the agency wants to protect the content they film then a Netflix approved camera makes sense. If a DP comes in with Lumix gear I would question his choices. Sony, Canon and others are Netflix approved. Plenty of choices. I used to think hybrid cameras were close to being as good as cine low end cameras. I don't think that way anymore. Hybrid cameras are great and needed if you do run and gun AF work. The workflow is faster compared to the Komodo or BM6K. Now if you went with the Sony A1, you would get BM6K video with great AF.

You and Josh have wierd conversations. We just talk politics and trucks. Must be because you're from Florida...you know, not to pile on with that whole deal. 🍻 I had this same struggle earlier this year with my KX (I think you know that whole story with Josh). I LOVE the KX, which is why it grated me that it was just sitting around. KX was my most expensive and least used camera that I owned. Can't have that...these things need to earn their keep.

@ReachFilms I'm filming a tv show on Amazon Prime with the red komodo og, and pushed that sensor to its limits where people told me it couldn't be done. A lot of people get mixed in with the hype, not really understanding their own camera. Look at Hollywood they use alexa minis or older alexa 4.5 or 4k. I'm just saying, "Use what you have and not the hype.
@ReachFilms
@ReachFilms Месяц назад
@@darkechoproductionsllc9559 I love the Komodo, I’m not discounting any of that. I’ve used it for a lot of great projects, especially narrative projects where we were originally using a lot more expensive cameras and got really great images out of it. It’s all kind of like about what I’m trying to do now and a lot of the stuff I’m filming now. I don’t really “need” the Komodo, but I really like the color science and there’s also the part where I’ve used this camera so much over the past four years. I know it really well so it becomes a usability thing where for me it is more usable than other cameras that I don’t have as much time using them on set
@filipmichalsaffray441

Sale the Kommodo buy the GH7 instead Lumix and Blackmagic have very close color science...and could I think surpass your Fx30 in many ways...I have a workflow where I always transcode to arri Log C3 when working with mix brand and having it in camera is something I would have never think of specially at 2200$...btw mostly doing classical music concert coverage, artist social media content creation brass, string festival coverage in EU...one men band multicam Orchestra productions...nowdays it is incredible what you can produce for a fraction of the coast...Lumix and BM cameras are a bénédiction for low budget production. Mics on the other hand Schoeps,DPA are the norm and it is where I will never go cheap... cameras...it is different almost every new cam is amazing and can produce Raw 12 bit 4-6 K footage Wich is more than enough...light is usually not a problem...
@ReachFilms
@ReachFilms Месяц назад
That's a great idea! However for me personally it presents two issues. Main one is to film raw on that camera its prores raw, so I run into the same issue as the FX30 as I can't use that without a lot of post work in davinci resolve. The second issue is I no longer own any micro four third lenses, so the big upgrade of auto focus would be useless as that will only work with modern micro four thirds lenses that support the new system. The GH7 is solid, but not the camera for me, HOWEVER when that technology is brought to Lumix L mount cameras, totally different story and I may have to pick one of those up as I can share lenses at that point between the Blackmagic and Lumix

I think RED is the big L in this 2024 new camera renaissance. As a future studio/producer If I was ever going to rent a RED as the producer, I honestly would not anymore.. I would not go Black Magic either, they are a bit all ove the place for my taste. Right now, from a production house perspective nothing beats the FX line up, with a Burano rental for special projects.
