I have been curious about the Rosa Studio line of paint ever since I tried their affordable professional range. They went on sale for 50% off so I bought a set to review: amzn.to/3MrkL5Z (at the time of filming they were 40% off, affiliate link used)
There have been a lot of sales on the professional line, Rosa Gallery as well: amzn.to/46SAToF and I recommend them over the "studio" line because they are much better quality and only a little more expensive.
Rosa Studio Watercolor review. These are the studio, or student-grade paints i am reviewing today: amzn.to/3MrkL5Z Ignore the word "professional" on the product heading. There is no regulation on that word and it is not accurate for this set.
Pros:
Price (I got it for 50% off)
Color selection is nice
Pigment info included
Lightfast info included
Colors mix well
The colors are strong and transparent
Lifts well
Glazes fine
No shiny spots with thicker layers
Cons:
The paint is thick and gloopy
The paint doesn't flow well in wet-in-wet
Several colors are fugitive (not lightfast)
No mixing area as the paint is in a cardboard box.
Bottom line,
Save up a few more dollars and go with the Rosa Gallery line of paint, it is the more professional choice and not much more in price. Or go with the Paul Rubens 24 full pan set. It has similar colors but it comes in a tin with a mixing area and the pans are larger, also the paint is a better quality in my opinion. amzn.to/3ZVfOaV

good to know Lindsay! I'm fully satisfied with my artist grade Rosa! As a matter of fact, the LAST thing I need is more paint LOL. Just the other day I pulled out my old, old Da Vinci paints and after fiddling around with it I thought 'wow...these paints are fabulous...why am I not using these?' I had forgotten 😕I will never use up all my artist grade paint in my lifetime. So I'd better get to slinging some paint!

As I recall, dextrin (a starch) is a common ingredient in student grade watercolors. It kind of doubles as binder and filler. Some brands use more than others.

Hullo Lindsay, I have not noticed that there was a difference between the Rosa paints! I thought it was just marketing! Thank you for sharing this information regarding the difference between the studio line and the artist grade paints. I have considered buying some of the paints from Ukraine just to support their economy, yeah I know that one purchase is not going to be a major influence, yet if you drop enough drips in a bucket it will fill up! I suggest that we uy the professional grade paint and create some paintings and let people know that you are creating beautiful artworks with paints from Ukraine! Thank you for sharing this with us, Please take care of yourself, getting better soon is a goal to shoot for!

Thank you so much for your support! There’s no huge or tiny purchases, even 1 cent is incredibly matter for us. Even one kind word is highly appreciated, I literally crying right now because I didn’t expect that someone would help by buying Ukrainian products. That is so cool and heartwarming!

I have this one. After that one I bought the student grade 24 set (“Rosa Studio”, cardboard box) and the 21 mono pigmented artist grade one (“ Rosa Gallery”, blue tin the size of the classic 24 halpan tin with 3rd row instead of space for brush) and put the 24 2,5ml pans in that tin without the insert. Needed to fiddle a bit to put them all in there but wanted to let people know that the 24 pans of this size CAN fit the normal standard tin boxes!

Oh hey this is my watercolor! Thanks for reviewing it! I was going to buy Winsor&Newton's 12-color travel palette but the shop gave me this Rosa and a nice watercolor pad for the same price, so I bought them instead. Sadly I never found Rosa in local shops again, I feel lucky to have it.

Compared to some of the really poor quality paint marketed for beginners, doodlers, and little kids at higher prices, the Rosa Studio is a good deal. The hard WC tabs that look like a bunch of opaque, fruity Tums in a decorative box? Same or higher price range junk, and people don’t know the difference. The Rosa Studio looks better on camera than the Sonnet, IMHO. I liked the old Cotman for bargain lightfastness and the practice with “real” pigments. Not sure about it now; haven’t tried it. 🎉Thanks for an excellent review, Lindsay!🎉

Thats what i noticed about the white knights 35 pan set. But the granulating sets arent like that, as far as the thickness goes anyway. Maybe its because they used the more lightfast pigments. But the purple ultramarine i was very impressed by it rewet like a dream and it was a very pigmented brushload

I like the Artist grade Rosa that I bought on huge sale. However, the water gets extremely gray, extremely quickly, which tells me that the binder is a little cheap. I use it all the time though, but change my water a lot. I would never pay full price for either artist or student quality Rosa. I'd probably opt for Van Gogh, if given the choice with Rosa, honestly, just for the water clarity. The best thing that Rosa ever did was make me realize how awesome full pans are. I now pour all my paints into full pans.

I definitely prefer my tube colors but these small pan sets are great to use in my journal. My question is what an I do to keep the pans from moving? @madhabitz
@madhabitz 6 месяцев назад
It's really good to know about that gummy texture on these paints, because this set had caught my eye. I have come to really not like that texture. On another note, I was watching a product video done by Jerry's, I think, awhile back. The product (Bee paper maybe?) had a "Studio quality" designation and the guy talked about it -- said that studio quality was somewhere between student and artist grades. I would be interested in learning more about this -- I don't know if companies have been doing this all along or if I am just now noticing that this is even a thing. I was also curious about your use of the word "cellulose" to describe a quality of paper. I took it to likely mean a wood pulp as opposed to a cotton pulp or a cotton rag. Since cotton is a cellulose fiber, maybe the word cellulose has evolved to a particular meaning in the art world? Like Kleenex is used for the word tissues, no matter the brand. I dunno -- I just get curious about this stuff.
@thefrugalcrafter

Interesting that the student grade are so close to the artist grade in price. Especially with those pigment choices, you'd think they could bring down the price! Student paints are often made so that they don't flow much (for better control) and easy to lift (as it's assumed you'll make mistakes). So, I can't ding them on those points. Of course cellulose paper is also often easier to lift from, because it's often harder sized. I agree with another commentor, they probably used a lot of dextrin. Holbein also uses dextrin, but only a bit, and not in all the colors -- but to give them the signature Holbein feel/look. When they use too much in watercolor or gouache, the paint becomes unpleasantly goopy!

It's currently on sale for $60.90 (instead of $81.80) today (it was $59.90 yesterday). So I just wanted to pass the deal along to you and your viewers. It is the one sold by Sehoon and titled "Mijello Mission Gold Class Pure Pigment Watercolor MWC-1524P, 15ml x 24 Colors (7 Milliliter x 2ea)" . No telling how long the price will last. and Waveon is still selling the exact same set for $81.80. It includes a tube of cobalt blue, which by itself, is probably worth about $15 and a tube of PR254 which is one of my favorite reds. All the colors are very good and most are transparent. Except for the yellow ochre PY 42 being a dull dud, and the usual issue of Korean names for pigments being somewhat different than the names we usually assign to the same pigment numbers, I highly recommend this set for the outstanding quality and value. Hope this helps someone else who has a limited budget:)

Hi Lindsay! I just wanted to let you know that referring to Ukraine as "the Ukraine" is incorrect. I don't mean to be a drag, but I wanted to bring it up and explain because i think it's important! Ukraine was referred to by Russia as "the Ukraine" during the Soviet Union when it was under heavy oppression by Russia. Referring to Ukraine in such a way implies that there is no independent Ukraine and that they still belong to Russia. A lot of people don't know about this important distinction, but in a time of war where Ukraine is fighting to survive against Russia's powers, I think educating people, about even this small detail is crucial. Sorry to bring the heaviness to the video, but I just wanted to let you know

I think sometimes it's a slip of the tongue. For much of my life everyone referred to it as 'the Ukraine' (I'm 69) I still have to remind myself to drop the 'the'. I certainly don't mean any disrespect as I truly am heartbroken about the struggles of this country. ❤

@flychk1229 That's totally understandable! I'm only 20, so I've referred to it as Ukraine my entire life, so it comes very naturally to me. And I'm sure most people don't mean any harm! But a reminder is always good! 💕 And I hope that if anyone watching this video wasn't aware, that they'll see my comment!

Lindsay did say "Ukraine" the 2nd time she referred to the country in the video.
