Interesting - So Waterford cycles have closed. It was kind of like the last of the Original Schwinn. It's a bit like a loss of a piece of America.

Cool. I believe these are what the Poms (English) call Audax bikes. I don't know what Australians call them, as I've not done one of their rides, but I've owned a fully equipped, mudgard shod, long distance bike some years ago. It was actually my favourite bike. I frequently rode it in preference to my carbon road bike, until an unfortunate crash put it out of service for a couple of months. A local rally driver's shop was the place recommended to weld up my broken frame. They did a decent job. Unfortunately the frame didn't last. It was rough, a Ribble Winter trainer, I believe it was called. It was rough, but I loved it. This Waterford bike is a thing of beauty. It must be pretty heavy, but my god it's pretty. I'd like to see a riding video of it, to see how it goes on the road. It's a beautiful custom machine, and I'd like to see it in it's element, doing what it's supposed to do.

Just wanted to say: Worked at Burley's tandem frame contractor which also used custom butted True Temper... Didja know that most of their tubing was not seamless. It has welded seams and when used on their thin-wall 1.125" diameter tubing, (which we ovalized...) you had to be very careful were the seam was positioned towards the ovalizer's faces, so you didn't crack the seam open. It looks like a nice bike, I'm betting it's supple and comfortable on rougher paved roads, much like my Austro-Daimler Vent Noir. Which has seamless Reynolds 531 tubes.

I have a bike with R-8000 11spd group. And yes, the way it shifts and functions is fantastic. This may just be personal preference, but I like a triple for a touring set up. I don’t particularly like the big 16-t jump going on and off the big chainring. I can’t help but think that someday Shimano will reintroduce a triple crank as if it’s a new innovation. Remember biopace ?

BF...You glossed over the seat post. I noticed it has a backward bent in it. Would that be helpful for taller riders? Who makes that? In that it is a custom-made bike frame, why couldn't you order a more relaxed angle seat down tube? Thanks for posting BF...!

Impressive, man. Beautiful bike. Gorgeous and well engineered René Herse components for touring, I'm a v-brake man, but hard to deny the classic look and the superb praticality of those cantivelers for a 38c+fenders+road levers combo. And those subcompact cranks? Just stunning. To be honest I dont see any area of improvement in the bike itself. Offcourse some posh (and perhaps a bit of your fancy self) may have prefered that you use silver campa potenza group, but how can you deny the powerful trickled-down technology from Shimano: 11 speed mechanical ultegra were used by 2nd division cycling teams in Europe circa 2015! You cannot beat that performance, it's just the same than Dura-ace, just slightly heavier! on a secondary note, one hs to appreciate how local the bike production can be. As being french, my dream bike is obviously made a local now-defunct company in the Pyrenées, Sunn. You got my sub, man, keep it local and agro.

TIG welding on tubing this thin is not easy so the fillet of the weld is indeed smaller than what you would see on a Taiwan made late 1980's robot welded bike. Anlun factory made Nishsiki's Cunningham's designed MTB's and their welds were almost perfect but still had a bit of an outwards bulge, true, precision hand welded TIG welding look like it flows from one tube to the next.

Must admit .. this is my first time ever seeing a Waterford ...reminds me of a time way back in the early 80s ...i was passing a bike shop window in Westwood, ca A triple ring Bob Jackson touring model was priced at $1500. ... looks similar to your fancy ride ... really like the deep blue color, ...fenders looking good ... your brakes look like my brakes on my 1990 Klein Attitude... ...i bought my Klein Attitude from a pvt collector up in Portland... ... didn't want to take a chance of shipping destroying or losing my Klein - so i drove 1400 miles to secure it's safety.. ...my Klein is incredibly museum Mint Original component cond. ... my Klein is so incredibly rare that the serial number is only 4 characters... ... it's been rated #1 most sought after rarest vintage bicycles ⭐⚡🏆😏 ...i took it into a local bike shop that used to sell these bikes - - the owner freaked when he saw my Klein... ...he told me at least a few times to not ride it... ... but instead Just hang it on the wall...😐

Rear hubs are one of the few components worth splurging on IMO as they really affect the feel of the bike. I cheap out in many other areas but am running an Onyx Vesper rear for the silence and soft engagement which is a plus for me. IMO the most noticeable areas of upgrade: tires, rear hub, pedals, saddle, bars.
@rollinrat4850
@rollinrat4850 6 месяцев назад
Yup, wheels, tires, saddles and stems and H'bars are the best things to upgrade. Your connection with your bike or it's connection with the ground... Bearings and hubs in particular are what we roll around on. Proper bearing function is imperative to the smooth operating, efficient vehicle. I recognized this as a 9 year old child when I first overhauled my coaster brake hub, merely because I knew it would make me go faster. Ironically, I see consumers constantly ignore bearing components and never bother to inspect them, much less, MAINTAIN them. This is a large part of my job security'! 🤑 NOTHING lasts forever and DIY maintenance is what my father and grandfather taught me. They both said "LEARN how to fix that or you'll be walking." They wisely recognized how much I loved my new found freedom! I bought Chris King hubs when he first started making them in the '90s. I'm a machinist and mechanical inspector by trade. Ive also worked in the medical and aerospace industries. Ive machined bearings used on satellites, aircraft, spacecraft, defense hardware and surgical devices. Highest quality on earth type manufacturing . I can also recognize, measure and assure manufacturing quality. I own the tools to measure within .0001". Ive got access to much more accurate equipment. Ive built, overhauled and repaired custom wheels for over 30 years as a small business. As is my trained machinist/mil spec habit, I ALWAYS measure new cartridge bearings and their bores before new bearings are installed. Proper interference fit tolerancing is what makes bearings last a proper long service life and perform their best. Bearing manufacturers ALL offer recommended tolerancing specs and it's well known engineering and design data. This also applies to all the cheap Chinese cartridge bearings many overpriced bike components are specced with. I've found many colorful anodized blingy and overpriced aftermarket hubs with poor tolerancing leading to rough bearings and short bearing life. The bearing wearing out is MOST OFTEN not its own fault. This is a huge problem with all sorts of pressfit $hit bottom brackets. That's got to be one of the most idiotic designs on production bikes. ALL done in the name of profit and corporate greed. Lots of these hubs are what people consider the very best on the market. DT has even begun to suffer from some of these issues in the last few years with their latest EXP hubs. Their problem has involved anodizing thickness. A common problem I've encountered with many engineered components over the years. It's not a difficult problem to solve IF you're doing proper QC and testing BEFORE products go to market. The entire larger bike industry (big corporate interests) seem to be devolving the last several decades. It's obvious to me. As someone familiar with QA, (quality assurance) standards, I find this unacceptable and shameful for products which are supposedly the 'cream of the crop'. Not to mention, they're very OBVIOUSLY overpriced. I had already used a King headset for over a decade of very hard abusive use, mtb and 'cross racing. This one headset outlasted one broken frame and got installed on another. So I went to a local shop (a Chris King dealer) and asked the owner (old friend) to disassemble this then brand new King rear hub while I watched. I'd been waiting for these to be released to market for a couple years. I brought my precision measuring instruments. THIS was the type of hardware I'd build, everything was perfect, well within tolerances. So we put the hub back together and I bought a pair of Classic hubs there on the spot. In 30 years and well over 100,000 miles ridden on those particular hubs, I've never needed to replace a single bearing. Ive bought numerous CK hubs used, some ignored and trashed for waaay cheaper, overhauled them, relaced them and sold them as built wheels. I've NEVER replaced a bearing on even quite abused hubs. I've only heard of or read about issues with them. It generally involves big abusive riders, negligence or tandems. Chris King offers stainless cassette bodies(maybe Ti) for these sorts of riders. These hubs will last much longer if you regularly do some fairly simple service. I do charge a bit extra, because I'm servicing and overhauling the very expensive bearings rather than merely throwing old bearings in the trash. I really don't see any point in paying retail or buying new CK hubs any longer. Not many people realize Chris King builds his own proprietary bearings, even the individual balls. I don't know any other bike manufacturer (maybe Royce) who does that. These bearings are very expensive, but they're designed to be serviced simply by removing a circlip and rubber seal, so they can be serviced and will truly last almost indefinitely given regular maintenance. You can accomplish this while the bearings are still installed in the hub or on an axle. There is a beautiful and special press tool available to remove bearings entirely. I own it but rarely need to use it. Ive attended several bike trade shows over the years. Every time I went to the Chris King booth, I asked him or his reps to build me a double sided track hub, but they always refused due to the small market. So I bought 2 of his angular contact bearings and made my own shell and axle. It's a glorious hub, that rolls seemingly forever. These wheels are on a fixed gear cyclocross bike I ride on muddy trail all winter. I also commute on this bike almost every day. As far as I'm concerned, CK makes the highest quality bike gear on the planet. Check out his custom steel bike frames called Cielo.

Around 5 years ago I came into a sum of money- and I wanted an A. Homer Hilsen with cantis. I actually spoke with Grant. There was some stuff about him being hinky about me being able to measure my PBH. I had it measured at a bike shop in Delafield, I even drove to Madison to get it measured at the one Rivendell dealer I'm aware of... No dice- Grant suggested I order a custom from Waterford. (looking back, it's right when he was getting things off the ground with Taiwan) Me, being me, being stubborn about not being able to do what I wanted- passed up the Waterford option and instead upgraded one of my existing, vintage, bikes and pretty much pissed the rest of the money away on bills and stupid stuff. You always figure 'Waterford will always be there." FWIW- using Google Maps, Waterford was 18 miles and exactly 8 turns away from my house- and I never even went there or even drove past. I should have done it while I had the money burning a hole in my pocket.

That is one sweeeeet bike! I'm starting something along that line with a custom frame. At 6' 4" / 193cm, I reckon I've been riding "almost right" bikes for enough decades that it's time to get a bike that's "just right." I love those René Herse bits and I had them on my parts list too! Although I'm thinking Herse center-pull rather than canti (I love the feel of good center-pulls), but of course that'll depend how well everything plays together. Anyway, thanks for the tour of that luvly machine!

Well that's great and all the whole best bike in the world thing. With Christmas coming up and a lot of people buying bikes for their kids and stuff, what makes a good bike? You can spend 5000 dollars and get a sweet bike, but most people just want a good enough bike. Aside from going to a bike shop and buying a big name brand bike what could you recommend people to buy if they had a limited budget and were looking for a bike from Walmart, Target or Amazon? There is a lot out there and most of it is trash but I know you can still get an acceptable bike from a big box store. It would be interesting to hear your take on department store bikes.

Mate it's a great video. You're also naturally funny so always a pleasure to watch. That is what we in the UK would call a credit card tourer or an Audax bike. Its very American though ther'es a lot of components you would not see on bikes over here. Metal mudguards (fenders) are not a thing here, very bling. I appreciate a good frame, whoever built that is a skilled artisan, again it's built so different than a European frame; the lug work is ....hmmm odd. I'm sure you plan to touch those chips up. I bought a titanium (you would call it a rando) , bike from Spa Cycles in Harrogate, Yorkshire UK this year, A Spa Elan MKII TI with hand built wheels and full mechanical 11 speed Ultegra. Race bikes are nice but for me there's something special about this kind of go anywhere machine. Shame Waterford are closing their doors it seems. Over here the bag would be a Carradice and nothing else, rightly so.

Hi Andy. Thanks for the video, and that is a wonderful bike. I have a Waterford storie to share. Last March I found a Waterford, in my frame size, on the local craigslist. After a little back and forth the seller and I decided on a price of 650.00 dollars. After getting it home, and to my shock and amazement, the craigslist bike had been used, abused, neglected, and had some of the worst DIY work I had ever seen. In the wise words of a RU-vidr, "My bike sucked"! However, with many new parts and many hours of careful work, it has become am absolutely wonderful bike. If anyone gets the chance to buy a used one, they are well worth the time and money. Have a nice summer. Tom

Beautiful bicycle a work of art. The fenders are also cool looking. Keep up the great work and stay safe out there.

Awesome bike. It's clear that you have put a lot of thought into how you've built it up and I tip my cap to you for that. Respect.

Beautiful bike! Love the way you have tuned it for practicality and beauty! I’m also dreaming about building a rando bike and this is a great inspiration. Thanks!

Thank you so much for this video I worked in a bike shop for 5 years and it used to be a Schwinn dealer and I somehow never knew the relationship between Schwinn and Waterford 🤷‍♂️🤦

Best video so far. Your bike choices are very different from mine, and that's what makes it interesting. The Waterford is a gem! Thanks for the tour.

So I have two baby Waterfords, Gunnar, and was bummed out when they closed shop. Both are dark blue pearl paint. My Crosshairs has been a wonderful bike that is 9.5 years old. My other is a Rock Tour II which is a tough as nails bike. I didnt do any custom except for the paint of the Crosshairs. The dark blue pearl was color of the month when I ordered the Rock Tour.

What a dream bike, jeez! Here's hoping that one day I'll get to build something quite as nice as that. It's just great. Cheers, man.

What a beautiful bike! Being that I'm in Maine, I have only seen a couple of Waterford bikes, but they certainly are beautiful. There's something about a custom bike that always brings a smile to your face I had a custom built ti frame in the early 90's, and just LOVE that bike! At any rate, thanks for sharing, I LOVE this stuff and can't wait to see your next one.

I love this bike! and some of those parts are amazing looking at how they work. I've been mulling over potentially building up or taking an existing bike and modifying it to make my perfect bike. one thing I enjoy is the more retro 80's 90's frame style for my own personal niche of esthetic. one day ill be able to work on one . (I also don't know much about building bikes but it be a fun project)
