Parents divorced and when we became of legal age and I contacted bank for the access to UTMAs everything was gone and they wouldn’t even provided transaction records as he was custodian.

As a divorcee, when my child was a minor, I kept a separate account where child support was deposited. Anything the child needed came from that account. When she turned 18 (birthday in summer) and went to college, I gave her everything that was in that account. I know not all situations are like mines.
@21truthbetold
@21truthbetold 2 месяца назад
Yes most situations are different because most women need the child support money to pay for rent. Usually fathers only need 1 bedroom after a separation, but the mothers are stuck renting at least 2-3 bedrooms because they have to pay for their child/children to have a bedroom to sleep in. So most times the child support is to help pay for where their child sleeps.

If it is a custodial brokerage account they won't transfer it into her name ONLY until she turns 21. She may be able to liquidate the account and reinvest the money into a new account in her name though. My son has a custodial brokerage account and the bank did not allow it to be transferred when he turned 18. He has to wait until 21. So dad might not be financially abusive and she also may not have all the facts.

@@sblijheid Pinhead Dad will pitch the hardcopies into the shredder and shrug. Lawyers can get bank records. I wish I understood whether student-help lawyers will press a case for free, instead of just offering sage advice. If the accounts are purely in the father's name (if not, mightn't the daughter have been receiving copies of 1099s every year?), it's gonna require proving that the transfers from daughter to father were not "room and board payments" (the obvious BS claim the father should resort to). The important evidence will surround EMails and texts; and witnesses who are willing to step up that they heard him claim it was the caller's funds - not his. How much you want to bet that any EMails and texts between the father and daughter have been deleted by all parties involved for years now?
@bradycone

Actually, that's not the case. Since his name is on the credit union account, he is legally entitled to withdraw whatever he would like to. The bank with the investment account isn't going to care (nor should they) that he deposited money that he legally withdraw from an account in his name at another bank. She should hope that her name is also on the investment account, but personally I think it's highly unlikely. He just stuck it into an account with his name only.

I had an abusive mother. I am turning fifty soon. Remembering my nineteen year old self, I remember still being terrified of my mother. I had to learn to take my power back as an adult even if it triggered my mother’s wrath. I had to armor myself emotionally to avoid feeling terror when she was angry. I can hear that terror in the callers voice. Be brave. I didn’t have money at nineteen but I had a mountain of original series Star Wars toys. My abusive mother said she was letting me leave them at her house until I could afford to buy a house in a nice neighborhood. By the time I bought a house and came for my toys, I found out my mother had given away my Star Wars toys to a married pastor she lusted over. The pastor bought a house with the proceeds from selling my Star Wars toys in a nice neighborhood. The reason I bring up my toy story is abusive parents want you to believe they have your best interest at heart but they’re so manipulative, selfish and unempathetic, they don’t ever have their child’s best interest at heart. As soon as an adult child realizes this fact about her abusive parent, the better of the adult is. The pastor ditched my mother as soon as he had an offer for a better parish. The pastor was just using my mother’s lust to milk her for money. To rub salt in the wound, a few weeks after I found out about the theft, my abusive mother asked me if I had any Ewok action figures to go with my Ewok village. She had one of those cold eyed evil smile look on her face as she asked.

Similar thing happened to me. My dad's ex-girlfriend helped me set up a bank account when I was 15. I worked summer jobs during high school and had about 1k in this account. Later when I asked about getting to the money. I was told that the courts took the money because my parents had recently divorced and "thought it was your dad's account" during the splitting of the assets. Took a few years but it finally dawned on me, that B**** took my money and lied to me. What adult steals from a teenager? Some people are just sick, greedy, self-serving people.

You're kidding right. This is financial abuse. It's her money she's worked for. You cannot withhold money from an adult even if they're your child. That is theft. You're disgusting. What she described lying, stealing, etc is not just "making her clean her room."

"You might talk to your mom that way, but nobody talks to my wife that way and lives." Quote of the day. Seriously though, divorce sucks. Sometimes parents "coach" their kids to say the things that they KNOW will trigger their ex spouse. My daughter and her mother decided where she was going to college and excluded me from the decision and and then asked for me to make up a shortfall of expenses when I was already covering the tuition and fees (about half the cost). Mom sent her over to talk to me, and gave her the lines to say. I told her "That's your mom talking, and you see that we're divorced now, so you might want to speak using different terms.". It didn't matter anyway, after the divorce I didn't have the money she/they were asking for, I was down to broke people food. I haven't spoken to either of them in years. Way to make a guy feel like he's nothing but a paycheck.

I find this weird in that she said that she never looked at the statement(s) her father gave her. Seems obvious so I think she is hand waving a bit on that and is making that up. I suspect that the investment account isn't in her name at all and if there is a statement if may be hand made that her father drafted up -- if it even exists -- after all why not look at it?. If there is a hand-made statement though that may be legally binding so talking to a lawyer might help if asking him for a check is refused.
