I have a 4 yr and 19 month old at home. My daily guitar practice routine is looking at my guitar on the stand as I walk past it 50 times a day dealing with the whirlwind of young kids energy and 10 second attention spans hoping I’ll have time to pick it up for more than 1 minute without being interrupted enough for any practice to actually stick.

You sir have inspired me to pick a guitar back up. I would classify myself as a beginner still. Played around a few years ago learned several basics but never truly got great. A friend of mine sent me your video on the Pink Floyd Comfortably Numb break down. Love that video and one of my all time favorite songs. Since then I have watched several videos and it has inspired me to pick up a guitar again and again start to learn. Thank you

Absolutely love seeing how your face lights up and you start smiling as your improvisations go in what I can only imagine is some new unexpected direction. Same thing I love about watching Tim Pierce's channel, the sheer joy of finding something new and pleasing sounding as you two move around the fretboard makes the already great content better. That alone has done wonders for my playing, enjoying the new music as it forms from my fingers instead of frowning and trying to control it all with my head. That was a bad habit that is taking some time to undo after 50 years.

25:00 Maximizing efficiency is not always a priority. There is a distinct difference in sound between a swept run and an alternating run. Which one you use depends more on the sound and feel you're after than it does on conserving energy. ... Then I watched the next 30 seconds and you said exactly the same thing 😂

My daily routine lately has been to play through... 1. Do you feel like we do (E maj) 2. Black dog (E maj) 3. Pride an joy (E maj) 4. Texas flood (E maj) No warmup. Straight into it. Its very challenging. It keeps the left hand strong. Plus, remembering all of that is great practice. These are four of my most favorite songs of all times. I also like to practice along with Led Zeppelin Song Remains the Same, specifically the song Dazed and Confused. I can't remember the entire song, because I need to have the Rhythm Section for all of that 26 minutes. I've been playing these songs since 1977. I caught on with SRV in 1984.

Techniques are great to practice, but the technique is only a means to an end; the musical piece or song. Physical technique cannot replace melody, harmony, and rhythm. I used to show my students clips of masterful guitarists gaining far less applause than an average (or below) person strumming a dumbed down version of a Dave Mathews song. The crowd will be entertained far longer if it's something they know or can sing to.

Rick, I was listening to an older video from 2020. You were discussing guitar players and their individual tone and how it is unique. I can't help but think of Roy Buchanan. Some of the greatest players of that era including Jeff Beck and others went to see Roy play, they wanted to see how he achieved his sound, which was made without the use of pedals, he was able to create some incredible sounds using the volume and tone controls.

To all the people in the chat: The tone of rick's guitar: Most of it comes from Rick's fingering technique, which is a split between a bass player's technique and classical, called "soft finger" by classical guitarists. The sound of rick's guitar: It's a Gibson SG in nitro finish, that's just what they sound like. It's not a miracle. Rick has nice amps too. The beauty of the Gibson SG: This is one of the most popular production guitars of all time. The neck of the Gibson SG: Good production guitars from Gibson have some of the best necks in the world. This is a known fact. That's why they cost thousands of dollars. The playability of the Gibson SG: Yes, yes, that's why it was invented. It was designed to be playable.

Could you do a practise version on the acoustic guitar because its different in terms of feel. Obviously you have fine instruments no fret buzz....Also share your comping chord progression practise to show your playful ear training.... You can change key singnatures every bar....but your right todays music uses less notes and simplier chords....great video.
