Beautiful 620! I have a 77 King Cab here in the US and I'm doing a ground up restoration and channels like your really help keep the motivation going! You can get 18mm tall poly bump stops from Energy Suspension which fit the same thread pitch for the stock location - that will cure some of what ails you, suspension wise

Cheers!! King cabs are super rare over here. I’ve got some 10mm ones but I’ve not fitted them yet as I’ve been worried they might bottom out the shocks. I’m excited to try a few things with the suspension when I get back working on it. There should be lots of room for improvement!! 😁

great looking truck first thing i would do is a compression test on the engine mate

We did one recently when I had some rough running problems. Unfortunately I’ve lost the bit of paper I wrote them down on. They were definitely on the low end but still ok and matching values across all. The head was rebuilt with new valves so I think to improve this I’d maybe have to look at piston rings.

Trucks awesome I really like it , can’t believe how cheap the floor pans are !, shame to scrape that engine but if it’s giving you gyp all the time it’s definitely time dude that new engine looked like a monster 😂 thing will be a beast . Nice one I’m jealous I wish it was mine lol safe trip 👍

Cheers mate!! I really wanted to try and make the old engine work but it’s probably going to cost too much to get it to the level of reliability I want. Hopefully something newer will allow me to do allot more travel next time

@@missioncapri It went well! I am a new proud owner of this glorious truck! 🤩 Very excited. It's about 85-90% complete. She is straight and in good shape. Has some surface rust in the usual areas, but is in good mechanical shape and nothing I can't fix!

Rebuild the engine! Here in thailand there are loads of part availeble. Just put a j16 cranck in my j15 engine, higher compression. Keep it original i think. Loads of Thai 620s already run with sr20s
@missioncapri
@missioncapri Месяц назад
I’ve already rebuilt the top end and was planning to rebuild the bottom at some point. Most of the issues I have seen to be with all the engine ancillaries. Allot of the aftermarket parts for these are very low quality and don’t seem to last long. That means I have to use old oem parts that are not the most reliable. Maybe though I’ve just been unlucky recently and I’ll have a good stretch without breakdowns 🤞
@fzrharm
@fzrharm Месяц назад
@missioncapri you mention that you changed the points, why not put a cdi in it? 1400thb Your full pump is in the engine bay, most electronic fuel pumps prefer to "push" the fuel instead of sucking. Place the pump near the tank, under the car. Itwill be cooler and won't have to work so hard. Lots of carb issues that I had was related to boiling fuel even in the carb. Have you thought about making it a 5 speed? Some have made a 5 speed that's still colomshift! End of the year a big Datsun meet in Saraburi, you should be there. I will be...
@missioncapri
@missioncapri Месяц назад
@@fzrharm I will probably do that if I end up keeping the engine. The fuel pump seems to work well now but if I do have problems again I’ll try that. I’ve already moved the fuel filter back there. I didn’t know about the 5speed column shift. What have you got? We planned to go last year but the paint issues took a while to sort out so ended up missing it but will definitely try and make this year!!
@fzrharm
@fzrharm 20 дней назад
@missioncapri my Datsun has a j15 with 4 speed columshift. Right now fitting the j15 with j16 crank. I posted it on the Datsun 620 thailand group. If this engine is more powerful and good next is changing it to 5 speed, but keeping columshift. Try to keep it original but usable. But that's just my idea...

That SR looks like it was some late FWD version maybe from a Bluebird or Pulsar , Nissan wiring is very simple and mostly all the same with not much change between engine year versions. I wouldn't bother with the a aftermarket ECU as you will surely be able to find all the ECU pin outs etc online . It seems that they had the engine running no problem , A/C will just need a signal from the compressor clutch or cabin switch and you might need a speed signal that depending on year might have come from the ABS or just a sensor on the gearbox . You can just use a aftermarket electric drive for the older speedo to be driven that can be adjusted . There shouldn't really be too much that is needed to be wired outside the engine harness and for the labour price there I think it would be far cheaper than a aftermarket ECU and have good old Nissan reliability . Or you could take the loom back home and strip it down , extend the wiring for what is going to need to be ran to the original truck wiring in your sweet time . I would be finding the original throttle body to AFM rubber as there always built with a flexible section and the AFM are always rubber vibration pad mounted to the vehicle with Nissan's or the AFM is bolted on the air filter box that is rubber mounted , it won't last long with the engine vibrations from that stiff silicone hose they prop'ed up to start the engine up . Gearbox I wonder what is commonly used in Thailand as original SR RWD boxes are all mostly gone from the planet , If you can find a RWD bell housing there might be more Navara truck gearboxes over there that would require you just swapping a SR RWD bell housing on to the gearbox . Maybe the gearing would be more suited for the truck as well . Another mostly unknown bell housing pattern that is close are F series Honda that from memory we only had one bolt location to drilled to convert one to fit a SR gearbox bell housing to a F20C . So maybe whatever they use for F of K series RWD conversion in Thailand might be another option.

Thanks for the detailed information!! I’ll do what you say and try using the oem ecu. I need to try and keep the budget low so definitely a good idea. Allot of sr20 swaps I’ve seen out there have the auto box. So not sure what manual gearbox’s are used but I definitely want to stay manual with mine

@@missioncapri Another issue might also be the sump . I can't see getting any of the RWD SR20 lower engine cradle and oil pump , pan etc being easy to come by anywhere now . I have seen quite a few KA24 S series Silvia's and 180sx's over there , I would think that they all would be swapped out for SR20det's by now so might be a easy conversion with the transmission as well . The other gearbox option might be a adapter plate to fit up any of the early 6 cylinder gearbox's for the L series etc , but once again all of this comes down to the availability over there or you will have to send it all from the UK I guess . Once again the speedo input to the ECU might also have a neutral and top gear switch , a lot of Nissan's of that period had that stuff for not only emissions , but also the crazy 180kph speed limiter . Without some of the puzzle connected they can become rev limited like a limp home mode . Guess your going to be busy with the Capri back in the UK and now your adding working out a conversion to the list as well ...

They have some good scrap yards here so will hopefully have quite a few choices of gearboxes I could make work. Ball had a few different ecu’s for that engine and he did explain about some issue on some of them but I didn’t quite understand. Yep back to work on the Capri now, still lots to do but I need to get it finally finished this summer!!

I have the same problem with front brakes on my 620. I think the 720 conversion is not plug and play so please if you do it lets us know how it went and is needed to make it work. :) I was thinking on getting adaptors made like in the USA and use D21 calipers and Isuzu rotors...

I’ll keep you updated. It’s going to be one of the first things I swap when I’m back out there.I know a few guys who have already done the conversion and the only thing they mentioned to me so far was a slightly increased track width using the 720 ones but they might be using additional parts like you said, I’ll try find out👍

From what people say here in Portugal, if you swap the arms for the 720 ones you get messed up camber and caster… looking forward for your updates! Thanks

Yeh it makes sense!! I’ll do some measurements when I get them on if it’s too far off I will look at making some custom arms. It handles really well now but I feel that’s just because it’s resting on the bump stops most of the time!😂
