I don't know about the rest of you, but I was absolutely tickled to see Boston in 2nd place. The last time I saw Boston in 2nd place was when the Troopers won VFW Nationals in 1970. See, I'm an old fart and I marched when the bugle was pitched in "G" and had one vertical piston valve and one upright rotary valve. The stuff they do now on the field just blows my mind. I aged out in '75 with the Crossman. In 1970 it was east against west. The east had Boston, The Muchachos, Blessed Sacrament, and Garfield. The west had Santa Clara, The Troopers, The Blue Devils, and others that I have forgotten. Welcome back to the top 3 Boston. Keep up the good work.
I disagree with the retreat stuff. I feel like the kids worked hard all summer to make it to finals and had to be serious all summer long. I think it’s ok to let go a little at retreat. I don’t think a little waving and jumping would hurt anyone after a long ass summer. You’re starting to sound like a boomer lol. Besides…. Cavies always trolled you guys at retreat and we all thought it was hilarious lol
@@musicfanatic4641 I totally see your argument. Maybe I’m just an old Cadet who is still old school? I’m just glad we can have respectful disagreements and still appreciate each other - because we both love drum corps! ❤️
@@Rocdar12 I totally get what you mean about being old school. I’m a boomer in the sense that (like you mentioned) I miss the old school closers where the drill was upbeat and difficult vs now where a lot of corps just scatter and park and bark lol. Agree to disagree on the original statement though hahah. I hope you had a great summer despite your home corps not being around. I truly missed seeing them on the field. Anyway, looking forward to more content. I’ve been watching your stuff since you (and I) were still marching 💜
@@Rocdar12 As a member, I do actually enjoy still being locked in and putting on a performance by staying professional at retreat. One of the reasons I came to santa clara. The fact that we are the only corp (hornline at least) that still doesn't move during retreat is a little disappointing but it really ain't that deep I guess. It's just a little embarrassing for those corps and dci as a whole, the field kinda looks like a bunch of elementary schoolers that can't stand still.
@@jacuhb8445 I agree to an extent. I didn’t like seeing all the bluecoats dabbing a bunch of times and seeing guard members laying on the field, but I didn’t mind seeing the corps smiling, waving at cameras and jumping out of excitement after a hard summer and soaking up the vibes of Lucas Oil. They worked their asses off to get to finals. Least they could get to do is smile and wave as they’re soaking it all in.
It was a very quick response, but no Crown mention in the video. My response to Crown -- it felt safe in terms of show design. Their Brass is the pinnacle of tone and ease of sound. Their color guard this year had great moments. Just a safe show -- like we've seen most of what they do before.
My freshman year in high school our Brass tech was Richard Sargent, a former Cadets contra. That Here We Grow sign gave me flashbacks. Love the content man! Super happy for Bloo and BAC this year especially!
Dang, no blue stars? I felt like they had some of the cleanest sets ive seen in the past couple years. Especially the star set near the end of the show
Yeah, I’ll acknowledge my skip there! (this is what happens when you make a video too quickly)! Blue Stars’ sound has grown exponentially (shoutout to Travis Larson). They go hard! Running around a ton! Guard work focuses too much on difficulty instead of achievability/cleanliness in my opinion. Pleased with their overall growth! ⭐️
Dude I lived through the glory years. My freshman year was 1995, made BD in 99 but couldn't afford it. Watching this year was (all puns intended) electric! Phantom was my absolute favorite!!!!!
As a DCI total nerd fan, I have to say, agree with the retreat hot take. I was so annoyed with the lack of holding the pose, drama, etc. IMHO, that is a great tradition in DCI and why not honor that moment.
My personal favorite was Santa Clara Vanguard… Question, did they lose points for not having props? Towards the end, they let their flags fly at the perfect timing… couldn’t wipe the smile off my face.
Nobody is going to lose points objectively for not having something specific, such as props or headgear or a marching cymbal line or solos or specific instrumentation for example. Whether you do or do not have those things does effect how you must create general effect and visual effect, though, which could affect scores. So while SCV might have not scored as high as they maybe could have with props to enhance their visual and general effect, the judges aren't looking at the score sheets and subtracting points because there are no props. The scores are built up from the bottom rather than knocked down from the top.
@@vibingonvibes8630 I really appreciate your response. I marched in HS, and played pit drumset for Cal State Northridge University. I’m a huge fan of Drum Corps, and wasn’t sure how it gets scored. I think Vanguard absolutely crushed their performance and was wondering if they were mentally prepared to possibly miss out on points knowing they didn’t have an entire aspect of the show.
Completely agree with you on the whole retreat thing! I'm in awe of what these kids do on the field in the midst of competition these days, but then utterly disgusted by the childlike antics displayed the minute they know a camera turns in their direction during the retreat. I'm also forced to remind myself that this is the very same generation who have had their entire lives documented and posted online for public consumption. I'll also add that I'm old enough to be one of those 'get off my lawn' types. I teach at a university and frequently have students request to take photos with me while I'm in the middle of proctoring exams. I guess it's truly just a sign of the times...
Just a quick question. Rocky Point, When I hear that, I think of the Garfield Cadets, circa 1983 (I saw them live that year), which was the show that forever changed DCI. I still have the LP's from the finals, and Rocky Point Holiday never ceases to amaze me. I'm assuming you marched with the Cadets (of Bergen County, at that point) am I "on point" (pun intended) LOL My first show what the Championship in 1980, Birmingham, Alabama Blue Devils (of course LOL) It was a great finals. And maybe The Bridgemens best show ever (In The Stone)
@@chestermarcol3831 Great conclusion there! Love the puns! I marched with the Cadets from 2013-2015 on Mellophone! Aged out with them! Because my name is Rocky, it just made sense to name my channel that! (I did a video every day on tour in 2014 and 2015 here on the channel! Check it out if you want!)
couldn't disagree more with the retreat stuff, let people enjoy themselves. just because you did it one way doesn't mean it should always be done that way. We just worked for 86 days and want to celebrate with our friends. Retreat is a different vibe and we want to have fun, why should we be super locked in and killing our fun with our friends? Ask MCM people if they enjoy retreat more than all the other members, cause I bet they don't. Let people have fun.
I already commented, but this video got me thinking- would you ever do a video based around “dci boomer takes” and just touch on some of the things that you miss in the activity (difficult closers, retreat etiquette, ect)? Or not your cup of tea for a video idea? I’d be interested to hear your opinions, but totally understandable if you wouldn’t be for that
I disagree wth ur rant, let them have fun! I mean everyone knows Hopkins made Cadets look like toy soldiers during retreat, and thats fine for tradition but do you not remember The Velvet Knights and other corps having a blast in retreat.
Yes, totally! I wish I could give credit to the original post, but I cannot find the name! drive.google.com/file/d/12KcId7CvHvDeQA4-k0vnF0vx93aSapBU/view?usp=sharing
One more thing, I guess I'm a just a big-ole sentimental type of guy, I personally would have thought that the drum corps activity would have been elated, and shown their appreciation for Vanguard returning to the field at finals. The crowd meter should have gone off the scale when they announced their name. It was just a blasé moment, in my honest opinion.
No way. Not based on the way these lawsuits can and have been worded. Any form of "The Cadets" will be attacked. Guaranteed. If I'm surprised, I would welcome it!
I disagree with the retreat stuff. It a whole summer of having to be serious and “professional” they’re done. The season is over they have nothing left to do let them relax and have fun and celebrate making it to the finish line.
words cant explain how glad i am that BD finally lost. i didn't mind them being top 2 because they still did unique things. what irked me was in 2017, they made first place with metamorph, and when they didn't make first the next year trying something new, the staff basically said "THE PEOPLE HAVE SPOKEN! THEY WANT THE SAME THING OVER AND OVER!!!" and then proceeded to have their next FOUR shows after dreams and nighthawks (which is a show i actually REALLY like btw) have the same level of flashiness and obnoxiousness that metamorph had, because that's what makes them win apparently. I've met hardcore blue devils fans who agreed that it was getting old, it was that bad. also, i think its really funny that their rival, bluecoats, beat them and got first, with a show titled "change is everything". the jokes just write themselves sometimes lmao
I love the Phantom Regiment show, but the duet in the middle REALLY took me out of the performance all season. It was written for difficulty to the exclusion of musicality and just sounded like sixteenth-note salad.
Congrats to Cirque du Soleil! What a season! More white spandex body suits! They look wayyyyy better than those uniforms and hats playing in the background.
@@WandaMoore-w2q My apologies! I was trying to go off the cuff with my quick responses. Here are my thoughts on Crown this year: It felt safe in terms of show design. Their Brass is the pinnacle of tone and ease of sound. Their color guard this year had great moments. Just a safe show -- we've essentially seen most of what they do before.
