Hi Jimmy! At the end of your course, will you have "Modern Languages and Cultures" or will the names of the languages you have done be in your degree name?

If I'm correct, it should be BA (Hons) Modern Languages and Cultures (with a Year Abroad), then separately you will receive a transcript of the full breakdown of your modules

Hi Jimmy! Just wondering, do international students with difficult -to-pronounce names usually adopt an English name? For example, Mandarin names in pinyin that English speakers usually have difficulty pronuncing. I'm also wondering how you should introduce yourself if you do use an English nickname - how do you explain yourself if people know you as "John" but yet they don't find your name on the register?

Hi Jimmy! I'm loving these videos, they're really well made. I don't really know the British system very well (I'm an American) but I was wondering: Would I be able to do a BA in International Relations while also studying German from a beginning level? Would it be possible to tag on French there too? I'll have done 7 years of school French by that time, although American public schools teach languages horribly, so I'm not exactly sure what level I'll be at.

Thanks. I believe it's different at every university. What you're describing sounds like a Combined Honours in Arts degree where you can choose different modules from different departments. It is possible and many people do that at Durham.

so it's like at Oxford? where you can"t apply just for one language and treat it as for example spanish studies per se, but you need to know one language extra apart from English (for foreign students of course) to study both of them?

Hi! I just got an offer to study MLAC and was wondering how often you get to visit your mates back at Durham during your year abroad.

As often as you like basically, I mean, I'm still in Durham since I got back from Barcelona a month ago.

Hey Jimmy! I'm currently in the process of writing my personal statement and I'm interested in studying languages at either Oxford, Durham or UCL. I'm studying Spanish at French at A-level with the hope of studying Spanish next year at uni. However I'm as of yet undecided whether I'd like to continue studying French or do another language such as Russian ab initio with the Spanish. Let's say I apply for Spanish and French and get an offer, is there any way I can switch to Spanish with Russian/Italian/Portuguese etc. once I get there?

Basically when you apply for a place at Durham, you apply for just the course "Modern Langugages and Cultures", therefore you won't need to decide which languages you are going to take until you select your modules in freshers week. At which point, you can then decide whether you want to take both post A-level languages or with an Ab initio language etc. You won't need to worry about that until you hear more about module selection in the induction lectures in freshers week. However I don't believe we have a Portuguese department at Durham. I might be wrong.

Just one more question: What made you go for Russian? I know Russia will always be a big player on the international stage but (and I hope I'm not being ignorant) it doesn't exactly seem like somewhere you'd want to spend 6 months in...

Honestly, because they wouldn't let me do Japanese. Instead of doing a culture module, I decided to take another language

Do you know anyone studying Arabic and how they're getting on? I've heard it's easier than Russian

What's the deal with textbooks, do they tell you which books you need and you just source them yourself? Or do they sell them to you?
@iamJKL

There are reading lists and recommended publications for the modules on your department webpage. You will have to source them yourself but don't do that until your modules are confirmed. You can usually find them in WHSmith but might be cheaper to buy them off Amazon

Hi! What languages did you apply for at Cambridge?

Sorry one more question, say you do German and Spanish both post a level, and you decide to do 3 German cultural modules and 1 Spanish cultural module along with the core language modules, so you do 80 creds in German and 40 creds in Spanish, does that effect the degree title you get? like does it now become German with Spanish instead of and Spanish, is it still a 50/50 degree or does it become a 70/30 degree? Thanks
@iamJKL

No, it's still Modern Languages and Cultures with a Year Abroad (Post A level Spanish and German)

Do you think that it is important to do 2 languages? I'm currently studying Spanish at A level and want to study it at uni but most people seem to do multiple languages
@iamJKL
@iamJKL 7 лет назад
Rosie Bee if you want a languages degree, you have to do at least two. But if you want to only do one, you'd only be able to do that with a combined honours degree
