My DISAPPOINTING Experience with Rolex & Others at Watches & Wonders - Brands EXCLUDED at Event?

Watches and wonders is now positioned as the number one watch show in the world, but like it or not it is fundamentally elitist and the strong stench of inequality wafts through the air.
In terms of the exhibitors, this is a place for the few, not the many. This is place only for the big establishment corporations, like Rolex, that can afford it. This is a place of marketeer supremacy for which its subjects are brainwashed into worshiping the brands that this year failed to bring us innovation…rather reheated novelties with different colour-ways, straps and materials.
Here, print journalists are wined and dined to give positive reviews of new releases from monopolistic big players. Here, only money talks, money buys you the stage, the exposure and ultimately the sales!
….the ignored independent brands this year brought us watches crafted from the tantalum, the rarest stable element in our solar system and even a perpetual calendar complication which will be delivered for under 10k dollars! But, at the biggest watch event in the world, these enthusiast brands, were NOT really welcome on that centre stage…so for the second year running, I left the event disgusted!

I disagree. I dont want to see baltic next to a JLC and a Patek... Just like I don't want to see a junior upstart team playing in the UEFA champions' league tournament. Let them have their own show and if they generate enough traffic and interest, they can play with the big boys. The big guys have big marketing budgets and reap the benefits. what you are suggesting is to have the young bucks free-ride tails of industry giants for the sake of diversity and inclusion. I don't think this is fair to the big boys.

The show is about luxury watches, which has nothing to do with equality. We buy these watches for the brand history and exclusivity. They are status symbols, no different than buying a jaguar 🐆 or Porsche. Relax Vinny-you sound vaccinated

The big luxury brands should be welcoming these smaller brands with open arms, for the good of watchmaking. The industry needs these grass roots to sustain, those buying the smaller brands now maybe future Rolex buyers. Plus the smaller brands can pivot more easily and innovate, which is crucial for the future of the industry.
@mccobr

Do you not mainly trade in those elitist, expensive brands? Do you do much business in the ‘plucky independents’? Maybe not much of a waitlist to beat… I get what you’re saying that W&W probably has a distasteful snobby feel but it’s the same at any shows that have premium brands. Take motor shows - you don’t generally get hands on with Ferraris or Aston Martin unless you’re invited - that’s because the many are, um too many. It’s annoying but they are there to sell things to people that can afford what they sell at the end of the day. Not sure why you were so disappointed/surprised with the ‘economic discrimination’; buying an anachronistic mechanical watch is by definition an economically discriminatory pursuit - no-one really needs any of these watches - a £10 Casio will do the same thing.

On point reporting. Of all the excellent coverage the tireless Tim Write did this year his coverage and interaction with the Independents was the most enjoyable.

The glamour of the Rolex exhibition, strives to make you forget these are mass produced, machine-engineered, robotic assembled movements and watches being churned out with no attempt at high horology. (4,500 watches a day) Lovely and well engineered, just like my BMW. About as common as my BMW too. It would appear the bigger the stand, the less they have to say. Equally, it must be disheartening for IWC for instance, with new Portugeeser, last years Ingeneer, and a 400 year perpetual calender to see Tudor declared the winner with a monochrome watch from last year and a coke GMT homage.

I did. Didn’t see any. No hate, just pointing out what I felt was a little bit of an inconsistency there. You criticise W&W, which we all know is a pay for play trade show, yet as a RU-vidr who can produce content for next to nothing, you’ve not been promoting these brands either! Great that you did in the second half of the video though.

Vinny best watch and wonders review i have seen. Refreshing that your not just following the herd and highlighting some smaller under the radar brands. Have never understood the hysteria and clapping seals when Rolex change the colour of a ceramic (plastic) bezel insert.

Vinny, as always, coming through with the critical one-two punch the watch elite need to hear. Rolex CEO referring to the small guys as unwelcome “pirates” did it for me. Happy to say I’ll never buy another Rolex but look forward to considering Oris, Omega, Longines etc. in the future. I’d like to try a Tudor but I won’t give in because Rolex want their poor customer service to drive us into the arms or Tudor. Don’t buy it, folks. Hold these brands accountable by holding onto your money.
@vinnyfrancis

Thanks a lot! I really did feel this strongly this year, it should be an event for all brands particularly as the independents are what most of us are actually considering buying because of affordability!…Oris had an amazing booth this year though and always a shame the swatch group brands were not present either

A couple things to note: (1) if you buy a watch based on gushing reviews from an influencer, you're an idiot. I appreciate these idiots because it keeps the secondary used market flowing with a healthy pipeline of lightly used watches. (2) Rolex and other brands will not stop making these very expensive watches when there is a line of fools waiting to buy them. Even more so now that Rolex owns Bucherer so they now keep 100% of the sales price on these items. Only a downward trend in demand will change the composition of the supply
@BAF605
@BAF605 5 месяцев назад
There did seem to be a lot of high priced watches in the novelties at W and W and it's true that many new smaller and microbrand makers are doing good things. As a grey dealer though surely you will have to concentrate on the usual suspects. I do a bit of buying and selling at the very affordable end (sub £1000) and I can tell you it isn't just Rolex prices that have fallen.

@@vinnyfrancis Your'e quite welcome . I don't blindly follow/support any grey market RU-vid dealer, only those who opine stuff on a factual basis. So many grey market dealers claiming to be selling 8 Daytonas or Yacht masters at Covid prices a week. " Oh we have / are so busy, our shop is full, as are our meeting rooms" Yes , agreed. With people looking to sell/get out of watches they purchased at x2 plus RRP. FFS. These deluded folk , still contend the market is on the up when you buy, yet when selling they will tell you in the next breath the market is on its knees. I and colleagues have had reason to visit some major RU-vidrs premises to see what was available at decent prices. Both said grey market dealers, with very significant YT platforms, seemed desperate. The phone never rang ( in two hours on 3 ocassions, and you could cut the atmosphere with a knife. By way of example. Box and papers, add nothing to the price when one is selling. When one is buying, " Oh box and papers is a 20% uplift. Puters operating in this space, are not ( in the main uneducated, morons)

This show costs a ton of money so of course, it's a big boy, big money event. Why does that surprise anyone? Small, independent watch brands need to pony up for their own show. It's simple business sense.

yes fair enough, though it was just sad to not see these great innovations there on the centre stage and thus getting the media attention, I guess thats capitalism...though they could introduce a cheaper tier with smaller booths/exhibition style tables so they could at least be there, space is definitely not a prohibiting factor

Letting plebs and peasants touch the watches isn’t what the top brands are about. They want to continue to perpetuate the game of exclusivity. You can look but can’t touch or buy their pieces. You are right. This elitist mentality will alienate more watch enthusiasts. This is great for micro brands. Atelier Wan is excellent. Their founders are friendly, open and approachable.
