My DIY Boring Company "Not A Flamethrower" Nerf Knockoff, how to make step by step

If you havent heard, Elon Musk sold "flamethrowers" to promote his Boring Company. I wanted one but didn't want to shell out 500 bucks. Especially when his "flamethrower" is essentially a torch more so than an actual flamethrower. Therefore in making my own I made my design as such to be more of a torch. This is basically an extreme Nerf gun mod. Thank you to my friend for your generosity in donating me Nerf guns.
I took a Nerf CS-35 Raider (free) and combined it with a harbour freight weed burner torch ($30). It just so happens that this fits inside it near perfect. The result equals Boring Company "flamethrower" Cheap knockoff.
The Nerf gun stock is from a Nerf Retaliator. The CS-35 Nerf guns are actually now discontinued however a near exact successor called the Nerf Rampage is still on the shelves.
If one were to buy all the parts off the shelf, the build would cost about 80 to 100 dollars. 30 dollar weed burner 30-50 dollar nerf gun and 20 dollars in brass fittings, paint, and propane tank.

Really cool video! What burner/blow torch did you use?

Hi I used one from Harbor Freight: www.harborfreight.com/propane-torch-with-push-button-igniter-91037.html

Pretty cool Locke! This made me think of: do you think you could use the torch to burn small particles exiting an airstream from a vacuum cleaner? I mean, instead of filtering fine particulates, you could burn them in a furnace-like set up outside of your house?

Thanks Sandman, it was a fun project I did a while ago and finally got around to making a vid. That is actually a viable idea (not so much for in home use hahaha), a vacuum plus torch essentially becomes a garbage incinerator or a furnace. In air filtration technology there is a process called thermal oxidation which is used to combust any hazardous gases but depending on what you burn, it can still produce some very toxic gas. An ideal machine of this type would be a plasma based incinerator.

@@LockeLaboratory Pretty nice, I just looked up thermal oxidation: www.leamericas.com/en/images/178235%20With%20Text%20Callouts_tcm136-429318_w1024_n.jpg Here, having fine particulates would work in favor of the burning process, since the heat transfer increases with diminishing size? I wrote to you a while back regarding surfactant treated water as filter media for ultra-fine dust. HEPA filters didn't last long for me regarding allergies and with your video, it just struck me: What if you just burned the fine particles instead of trying to filter them. They change structure to something completely different and my immunesystem does not have any problems with ash ^^ A bit dangerous, but so is barbequing..and i would have a very complete combustion going? The ceramic matrix could be made up of expanded clay pellets..or thriftshop porcelain ;)

Hi Sandman, Now that you mention it, this actually reminds me of an existing product: "Molekule" I saw it advertised on FB. That air filter also oxidizes incoming particulates to neutralize them but in a different path via photoelectrochemical oxidiation. Something that sounds very interesting and which I do not know much about. I think completely burning incoming particles would work just as well but would of course depend on how to go about it. Like trying to make a DIY from a propane torch would just produce carbon monoxide and other combustion byproducts just as BBQing inside is unsafe. I'm thinking something like an electric kiln (nichrome wire heaters) with ceramic media as you mentioned would be better. Be careful of refractory material as it is basically asbestos if it becomes airborne. I would like to build a small scale plasma based gasifier to solve other problems such as plastic pollution but not sure how feesible it is...

@@LockeLaboratory I have looked into photocatalytic oxidation (pco) last spring and also that of the Molekules "PECO" and air oasis "AHPCO", in its essence, they are more effective in oxidizing than PCO and PECO produces less ozone due to its use of uv-a rays rather than c rays :) Sadly, they often are not effective in degrading things fast enough, even small VOC's are sometimes incompletely degraded, but maybe it can be done with a ulpa filter before the peco/ahpco unit or maybe the surface oxidation is even enough for my immune system not to react, ill keep it in mind for sure. I looked up many studies because a simple titanium oxide + Uv-c light with carbon to capture some of the random oxidized compounds would be easy to build. TiO2 is basically what is most white paint consists of, easy to get your hands on. The idea with the thermal oxidation unit was interesting because my vacuum cleaner already has sealed connected long exit hose build for a waterbased filter outside the house. I have build a space heater with NiCr wire before, and they alone do improve air quality a bit. I will look more into that idea, and if i take any actions i will run the idea by other experts first, i did not think of the ceramics becoming a hazard in itself. A plasma incinerator would be neat yea, i just looked it up properly, turning everything into its basic elemental states. Since you worked with high volt before, you could approach it with caution?

Interesting! It sounds like the PECO suffers the same problem as ESP's and that is it is less efficient the faster the air moves which would require a large array to compensate. Thermal oxidizer would have its limit too if the incoming air cooled the media too much. Yea I have bought refractory brick from a pottery supply store and that stuff gives off a chalky powder. I think they would need to be sealed somehow so the powder doesn't become airborne. I guess you could simply enclose the oxidizer clay beads in a steel can and wrap the can in the refractory, then one would only have to worry about the clay bead dust.

Can you link the connector that is used to connect the propane to the hose
@LockeLaboratory
@LockeLaboratory 3 года назад
Sure. I believe they are already in the description at the bottom. There are Amazon links for the valve which connects to the propane. Then There is a female barb fitting which connects valve to the hose, then another male barb fitting to connect hose to torch. Here they are again: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0016IZZZU/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002OUCSU4/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000BQL8RC/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Does yours shoot large fireballs? I built mine and mine can't!
@LockeLaboratory
@LockeLaboratory 4 года назад
Hi, it has to do with the knob settings. To get larger fire balls, you barely open the valve on the weed burner torch (the knob near the trigger) so it is almost fully closed. This lets pressure build up in the small section of hose so when you pull the trigger, it lets the gas out in a woosh. The other knob near the bottle is open fully. Be safe and have fun.

Very nice invention . Can I purchase the flamethrower from you ? I have some cool projects for it.

Thanks Young Jay. I'll have to think about the it. I'd probably let it go for about 200 give or take + shipping. I was wanting to convert it into a real flamethrower at one point. Perhaps I should make several more and sell them on ebay?
