A demo of the nutrient jar stirring, voice control, and user interface of the DIY garden automation system I've been slowly building over the past year or so. Currently, the system is managing climate control, pH and nutrient dosing, fertigation schedule, light cycle, and has flood detection capability. It's a work in progress and I'll be sharing more about it as I go.
I'd be happy to hear any comments, questions, or suggestions you might have, and would like to know what you’ve got going on if you're doing something similar.
Part 1 here: • My DIY Home Assistant ...

Hello from Russia! This is a very interesting system. I'm not sure that there is a need for the use of Arduino. But since it works, that’s fine! It is very interesting to see how you did the automation in the Home Assistant. As an aid to your project, I can offer a solution for the use of capacitive humidity sensors. They do not oxidize and do not have a harmful effect on the environment.

Just came across your video. Great work! I also just picked up a pH kit from atlas. How are you sending the calibration codes? Are you using i2c with esphome to send the commands or some other means? The reading come through great, but I haven't figured out how to calibrate just yet
@LEDGardener
@LEDGardener 2 года назад
I haven’t calibrated yet through ESPHome but it might be worth spending a bit of time to figure out how to trigger it. In my original system I would just send the command over i2c whenever I needed to since it ran off Arduino code. If I remember correctly, Atala says the time before recalibration is ~1 year though, so hopefully it doesn’t need to be done too often anyway.

Nice, awesome setup! A question about your light times... Are you aiming at giving your plants constant 24/7 light? Most plats need a resting time where it's dark.. so after ~8h of full sun light they wont get any benefit from the light :) (idk if more light is harmful or not) Also i think it's possible to put some fancy Grafana plots on your Lovelace dashboards using a webview component. Cheers!

Did you tried/worked with DFRobot hardware? they seem to have very abordable hardware compared to Atlas Scientific. That would be great to see this kind of DIY projects at a more "frendly" budget, especially that this kind of automation benefits a lot more to small growers rather than big ones (it's their job to monitor PH, EC, adjust etc 😅)

I use conditions in the lovelace card that look at the state of the binary sensors - for example if binary sensors 1-5 are high, it will show all 5 time inputs. Could you use a VPD chart to control your humidity? like instead of setting an ideal % fallow what the % should be based on the temp? also any way to create long term graph or log for a plants grow? maybe to like a google doc or sheet that has avg temp high and low for each day. after watching your videos i starting moving items off my Pi to esp's and homeassist its been cool.

The VPD thing is a really good idea. I think a lot of people are using something called influxdb to manage their historical data. I added the add-on but haven’t learned it yet. Welcome to the fold!
@undergroundguy7981
@undergroundguy7981 4 года назад
It is possible but you need to put the leaf temp into the equation for prefect VPD. It's never the same day to day on a growing plant. Best to focus on just the room temps & humidity, keeps you within range.

How ,much was this system? I’m considering something similar but the cost/benefit on it might not be so great for my small application.

How are the stir pumps being controlled ? I know in the video you said you have them connected to the relay but on the dashboard it shows that the relay is not connected to the pumps.
@LEDGardener
@LEDGardener 4 года назад
The magnetic stirrers in the jars are connected to relay 0 of the 8 channel relay board. The stir pump that mixes the nute res is connected to one of the relays that runs my power bar (they’re labelled “outlet”) on the dashboard)

You can't hear it, but I'm clapping right now. Great work man. I am not familiar at all with home assistant. I am looking forward to diving in and making something similar. Is there a forum somewhere with people such as yourself discussing things like this?

Awesome. The official Home Assistant forums are an excellent resource. There are some really good videos on RU-vid to get started with it by Bruh Automation and JuanMTech.

@@LEDGardener I've been going through Atlas scientific's instructable tutorials all morning. It's looking like it's going to be easier to setup than I thought. At the moment, my goal is to setup auto ph dosing and ec control with a simple display. I already have environmental controls in place, but I plan on integrating everything similarly to what you've done so I can monitor and control remotely. I will definitely check out Bruh Automation and JuanMTech. Thanks again for the information!
@LEDGardener

Nice! Feel free to make a thread in the control forum at ledgardener.com/forum if you need some help. You’ll want to electrically isolate the pH probe and EC probe if they’re in the same tank since the EC probe will throw off the pH readings if you don’t. You can get voltage isolation boards from Atlas or the Tentacle shield i bought does this too and it comes with example sketches of Arduino code to poll the sensors that I modified to fit my system. The code that came with it was literally the first Arduino program I’d ever opened.

I've posted a diagram, parts list, and all the code at my github repo at github.com/ledgardener/gardenAutomation if you're talking about blueprints in a Home Assistant automation sense, I have not yet created any since they didn't exist at the time I shared all my code.

A+Mazing. Do you think you could use one home assistant instance for both the garden and for the rest of your house? Does it separate relatively well with areas and such?
@LEDGardener

I am doing a bit of regular home automation stuff with motion detectors and smart switches. You can separate them out very easily by area or just by view in the UI.

They communicate over their serial TX and RX pins. You have to tell them what to say to one another and what to do when they receive that info.
