This is the pallet breaker that I made from scrap metal. It works really well. If you have the scrap metal, or old tire irons or wrecking bars, and if you or your son does welding, it might be worthwhile to recombine them to make one of these. It does not produce as good quality wood as the 2 bar method I show in an earlier video but it is very fast. I will add dimensions and suggestions to the video if people request it. Brian

I like that you repurposed used and broken material. More folks need to do that instead of wasting money on overpriced merchandise. Well done, Brian.

Great tool, great idea. Leverage is always the key to dismantling these beasts.

Best design yet even it's a bit rough, prototype... I know. Great idea to have the nail pullers on there too.

Hi Brian, perhaps a longer handle would make it easier to pry the boards off, but yes, it would make the tool heavier.

Thanks Alan, If I was making it again, I would have a longer handle for sure. I also use it to bend rebar on job sites and for welding where I occasionally bend rebar too. Sometimes I put rebar in rock walls and the rebar often needs bends. It is pretty good! and I have used it as a 2 pronged pick on hard ground in site preperation

I can't weld but I'd love one of these!!!!
@Brians-Easy-Low-Tech-Solutions
+pam Thompson-Clarke-Reynolds-Bowers-Burton I bet you have male relatives who would be happy to weld one up for you. They are probably forming a lineup to do it! (Because right now they are on holidays and getting bored) They will fight each other for the opportunity to do this one thing for you! You can buy pallet breakers, but they are not cheap. I made this from broken stuff, so really the only cost was the metal pipe, (which was free) and some welding rods. Merry Christmas.

+Brian White I think I'll have to buy one as I have no male relatives, just a sister nearing pension age lol. She bakes lovely cakes but can't weld.

well done sir! I'd pay money for something like that. I just got into pallet projects and I'm loosing too much lumber in the separation process

thanks Brian..I'm guessing that one tool will work when the stringers are 2x4 and a 4x4?
@Brians-Easy-Low-Tech-Solutions
I didn't make mine wide enough for a 4 by 4. So, I'm afraid that I don't know. The other thing is that if I made it again, I would have the handle a bit longer. Maybe make it a ft longer and then cut it to an appropriate length after using it a while. The best thing I did with it was cutting the little nail puller grooves and adding the piece of rebar behind one of the grooves to get better leverage.

and what happens when the boards are close? I like this idea cause it's simple. but all of this Pallet dismantling tools show the tool taking boards that are 5" apart? what do you do when there's a small gap between the boards???
@Brians-Easy-Low-Tech-Solutions
As long as there is about a half inch gap you can use it. The end is a brick hammer head, its thin so it can get into tight gaps.

If you are gentle, a Mattock works ok too. About a decade ago, they started to make brick hammers "softer". I think old brick hammer heads will still work for this type of thing but I make no guarantees. The "gun metal" handle, I also got for free. It was a fun project, I still have it and I still use it. I got a couple of months of wood fires from pallets this spring and most of my solar cooking experiments and greenhouse beds are built with wood that I took apart with this thing. A very useful thing!
