These settings are not gospel. I'm not an audio engineer. These settings do, however serve me well.

The 0 position is what is referred to as unity. At that point you are matching what is coming in as a source to what is being sent out. You have adopted a good practice by doing so. I have heard many DJ's either over drive their sound or hear nothing but the hissing noise floor. Nice job Brian!

Thanks for this video. I appreciate your work very much and I have taken your advice and adjusted the settings on my set of Ev tops, monitor and Subs. I can't wait to try them out at my next gig. Keep sharing your knowledge with us. Again...much appreciated.

Another great video Brian thanks for sharing the seetings you use for your sound. Theses are the seetings I use on my board and tops. Gonna setup my sub -4 DB now I used to use 0 DB on my sub with the 100 hz crossover.

Great tips! Good to get people thinking about this stuff, I see a lot of weird setups and a lot of people have no idea how to set levels.

If you know nothing 0db is where it’s at:) a sound guy told me that. I never got to the red on Pioneer as it always got muddy. Now I use other brands but still stay in the green.

Solid Brian. Same principle for great sound with us, even with using the dbx DriveRack PA2 and the EV suite of subs and tops.

I pretty much do every thing the exact same. Only except on my EV ETX 18 subs I run the setting on “LIVE” bc I think it sounds better (more neutral sound).

I have 2 ELX200 15P's and 1 ELX200 18SP. I run them on Music and pick the actual Sub and tops as the crossover points. I will try the LIVE setting on my tops. One thing I have found is that I have my Mixer and controller putting out no more than 0 db and my speakers Tops and Sub set to -10 db. It sounds really nice but extremely loud. I only use the EQ on the mixer. The controller and the speakers are all set to flat. I need to get the courage to see where that limit lights kicks in HaHa.

I mix live sound, and 0dB or unity is what I aim for all the way through. I know a number of people who live in clip (Living in Clip is a great live album by Ani DiFranco by the way). Sure, it's loud and it works until it doesn't. Adopting a similar practise to you has no doubt saved me a fortune in cooked speakers. Occasionally, I'll push the board beyond 0dB but I like to make sure I have more headroom than I'd ever need. If I have to continuously push the setup hard to get the desired output, I've gotten it majorly wrong by either bringing a rig that's too small or taking on an event that's too large for me to cater for.

Increasing the decibels on the sub doest meant you are going to be clipping. It all comes down on how well you do and know how to mix your sound. I crank the 18 power su EV up to 7 and I have played a high school main basketball gym and the bass is just great no need for another sub. My levels is at 50 when the meter comes up and I never see not even a clip. Using the right tools for a mix is the key

How is it going Brian? I started whatching your videos since 2008 I think. I used to have a mobile disco in Cancun Mexico back then, I remember you and Dj Tutor guy from England Johnathan I think that was his name. Good times back then. Hope you're doing well, is good to see you again, Cheers!! Practice and enjoy. Saludos, Dj Super-Sonic. (Ernesto).

I've never needed to run an additional sub with them, but if I had to, I can handle the EKX 15SP I have. Where it gets tough is lifting anything bigger than the EKX 12P up onto a speaker pole
@isaiahfurrow7414
@isaiahfurrow7414 4 года назад
Is that the EKX 15SP or 18SP... I've found -4 to be about right pairing my EV 12" tops with my EKX15SP. I usually run the tops at -3 unless later in the night more volume or punch is necessary, or in larger venues, then its up to 0. I've been experimenting with 80hz as well...I think the 12" woofers produce down to 80hz pretty well, without making the mids start to get muddy at all, and not producing lower than 80hz seems to still free up enough headroom for two of them tp outrun what a single EKX 15" sub can do. This also frees up the sub tp hit harder at the lower frequencies, and not blink the clipping warning quite as soon. Lastly, I think 2x 12" hitting down to 80hz makes the kick a bit more punchy on most songs... I've still been experimenting with this, and havent tried it in more than 2 spaces so far, so it's still very much an experiment... I have the GoRack as well, a great unit. I use mine the other way around, mostly.... it's wired up in the bottom of my flight case, with my MC7000 running into it. It also has an Aux cable into it for plan C or D backup situations... I use a couple ofnthe EQ settings on the GoRack unit that I have found to helpnthe sound in a couple of the venues I play at regularly, and I use the feedback suppression to help, especially when I hamd someone else the mic, and they sep forward in front of the speaker a bit, or point it a bit toward a speaker, etc... the GoRack really is an awesome unit, wish I had 3 or DBX still made them.... I've used that little gem of a unit separately for other uses when no music was wanted, such as PA work where they just wanted a Mic and a way to play audio for presentations, stuff like that...it's a shame its no longer around , probably cut into DriveRack sales too deeply...lol. I'd buy 2 more if I could... Set my gain staging to peak at the first light above 0, on the channels, as well as the main output...with odd transients on the second light.... This still leaves room to push the EV speaker inputs quite a but harder before they show a limit on the input side, with their input level knobs at zero/unity... so running with plenty of headroom, yet plenty of signal for the amps to work with. All, in all, very similar to what you're doing. Thanks again for the work you do to help us all...

is there a way on the ev subs to set a high pass filter to reproduce frequencys above 10 Hz+ so it wont work as hard trying to get super low.
@briansredd
@briansredd 4 года назад
According to the website, the EKX 15SP I show here is producing stuff from 40 hz at -10db & 45 hz at -3db. Really turning it down feels like the best way to keep it from struggling too hard. That's why I do like -4 db on it

The 745a’s are pretty insane speakers. Those things just won’t clip! Lol. I’ve used them at 12 o clock. And like Brian said, just make sure your not setting clipped signal so it doesn’t sound distorted or messed up. But I’ve done some tests with that speaker and sent signal to it just under clipping (all amber lights) and the speakers were still amazing. Then for an additional test I turned the volume knob on speaker to 2-3o’clock. Still didn’t limit! However the highs became VERY loud and up close was a little harsh. Now obviously I wouldn’t do this at a party but just saying after the test, those speakers are insane and can def handle a LOT!

@isaiahfurrow7414
@isaiahfurrow7414 4 года назад
The DBX GoRack is a wonder....sad I didn't realize a couple years ago th awww t the closeout sale meant they were discontinued, I'd have bought 3 more.... It will work as 2 mic/line XLR inputs, alsp has 1/8" aux... Has options for how you want things summed to mono or not, or.... Also has some EQ presets for different kinds of rooms/spaces, etc... Has a sub/octave bass thing, I forget the name, as I don't use that... and lastly...it has the DBX Feedback Suppression built in. Not quite as stout as the AFS2 or what is in the full rack mounted DriveRack processors, but it's a gem of a unit, and perfect for many PA applications or for DJs... I have mine in the flight case under my MC7000, along with wireless mic reciever, power supplies, etc... all pre wired and ready to go. If you're interested, look them up...if its something you think would be useful, maybe Guitar Center or somewheee has a used one, or Ebay...they've been O.O.P. for a while.

I never run a mixer into a mixer then off to powered speakers. He’s correct in the fact that unity is your friend when gain staging. Keep dancing into the red because it looks cool and sounds louder and eventually something will blow! If it’s not loud enough for the venue then add another speaker or two, three, etc. Planet Rock 😂😂😂 🫵🏾👍🏾
