One of my dresses was featured on Kawaii.i !!! A little bit ago I entered a sustainable DIY contest that was put on by Kawaii International of NHK broadcasting and I earned a feature. While I didn't win the contest, I'm still incredibly honored to have been featured on the show!
Hi! I'm The Stitchess! I'm an interdisciplinary artist and seamstress. I started sewing when I was 8 and loved it so much I made it the focus of my study in college. After a lifetime of battling severe mental health issues - I found healing in the radical softness and Japanese kawaii communities. As much as I love fashion and clothing, I also think it's important to consider how and where clothing is made. I went fast fashion free at the start of 2019 to voice my concerns over the rapid consumerism gripping the garment industry. By no means am I perfect, but I think it's important to show that change is a process. I believe it is always important to strive to be better, even if perfection is unattainable. Thank you so much for letting me share my art and process with you. I hope we can all grow together.

When I saw the blouse made from vintage ties I immediately thought "I hope it's not silk", because vintage silk ties (as recent as the 70s and 80s) were dyed with heavy metal dyes, which are fine if you wear them over a shirt, but definitely not safe to be worn on bare skin...

The special shop who imports vintage clothes from the US and then cuts them up to make new designs just irks me in several ways. -I don't think that's contributing to sustainability. It has to be flown around the world. And I am sure they have lots of scraps/waste after cutting things up that will not be used at all. -I think it's more about profiting from the sustainability trend, and basically saying "look how hip and with the times we are. Buy our clothes at ridiculously high prices".. -I understand vintage shops probably have a surplus of home crocheted table cloths so I don't mind them cutting them up, but when it comes to actual vintage clothes and accessories I think it's a waste to cut them up. Most of the time with vintage items all you need is someone who is interested in the era and the style, and then occasionally some tailoring is needed. That's far less wasteful than what this "upcycling" shop is doing. I love the other shop that is doing the repair and remake services though. It's very simple (no middle man), you bring your stuff there and they repair/remake it for you. I was amazed at how much high tech stuff they have to alter and repair the clothes with.
@TheStitchess
@TheStitchess 4 года назад
The repair and remake shop was my fav too! I just felt like the other two stores were lacking in concept, although I do wonder what’s happening to all those scraps now too. It kinda of makes me sad to think of a bunch of cool 50s and 60s pieces being chopped up to make something trendy and STILL having textiles go to waste :/
@itsalwayshalloweenexceptwh5118
@itsalwayshalloweenexceptwh5118 4 года назад
@@TheStitchess They probably see the vintage clothes as "raw materials" to undo all of the seams of, pressing everything flat and then cutting new pattern pieces out of them. I imagine a lot of waste that way unless they use a new pattern in a similar shape to the original garment. I just think it's a waste in general to use vintage clothes as raw material. Everything about the item (the era specific style, details, the sewing techniques) will be lost except for the fabric. It's like passing a one of a kind history book through a paper shredder and then saying "It's still a history book".

Tbh you can just go to a tailor near you and get clothes fixed or even fix clothes that you found but weren't fitting a 100% i do that sometimes when i find beautiful vintage pieces to make them even more special. And it can still be reselled afterwards because i didn't destroy it like the first shop did! I really don't like it when people cut up vintage clothes to make something completely new out of it esp if they are like 40+ years! Thats history you're destroying there someday there's not gomma be anything left

About the shop where you shop by appointment: that’s pretty common when a shop is set up in some sort of apartment (I’m p sure it helps avoid certain taxes to have it set up in a residential building, and when you do that you don’t want the neighbors to complain so they give you an appointment to avoid crowds gathering)

A comment regarding the $15 jackets: The fact they're selling them at that price does not mean that their cost is below $15. This company already manufactured and sold the stock they planned to sell and made their profit, now they are left with the remaining stock they are not able to sell at retail price or anything close to it. Irresponsible brands will save up on storage and just throw these garments in a landfill as soon as they can, marking the cost of making this overstock as a loss. "Sustainable" brands will resell these at a minimum value to someone that will convert them to something else. Something else to keep in mind is that when you have a large scale manufacturer of clothing, the marginal cost of manufacturing a bit more of stock is not *that* much. The real cost is in the infrastructure and the volume, keeping in mind that most big brands will not use the most high quality materials (I'm leaving fast fashion and exploitation out of this or I'd be here forever).

I have an idea for your lace patchwork dress idea: Start with an already-ruined lace dress, or a lace dress that needs extensive repairing, or say, a slip dress that's got a lot of damage and needs patching. And since this is youtube and you can always use new content ideas: Solicit patches from people, they can be sent in stamped envelopes. You could also find someone who knits/crochets and have them do specific lace patches to put on the damaged dress.

The second shop, that sold the repurposed vintage cloths, is kinda of upsetting. Those cloths that are in pristine condition could go to a museum and tell a story, but to tear apart old ties for one new garment is sad. Fashion history is super important, and destroying vintage cloths just to repurpose them isn't always the best idea.

Especially as some outerwear items from the 80s or earlier can't be worn on bare skin because of the dyes. Feel free to use tablecloths, curtains, even bedsheets (there's a whole in convention market near me for 80's/90's bedsheet skirts); but the dresses are sometimes one of a kind or there's less than 100 remaining. I have a pretty rare daywear/casual tulip sleeve Laura Ashley dress with a double pleat. (I've only ever seen single pleat formalwear tulip sleeves.) It's 100% worth more than the £30 I paid for it, even if it needed darning

When I used to sell for postmark, I actually found this group of people who were so dismayed at the idea of people getting their quality fancy brand clothing for cheap that they would cut the tags and then give it to thrift stores because they saw resellers as vultures and only people who want the time for their personal wardrobe for them . I accidentally join the groups and when i realize it was about learning what was popularity on postmark in order to rip out the tags before giving them to thrift stores i was taken aback. No tag definitely can be a sign of a fake or not good source as well as some people just really not wanting reseller to sell thierself as if if you cant buy it at full price you don't deserve it at all. - Im still in shock
@Saint_Medusa

Also it reminds me of the fact that some companies destroy food and clothing just so its not seen on the poor. finding that out made me livid. But overall its nice sustainability is becoming a priority and i hope it becomes more common. There enough clothing and food for everyone if people were valued more which they can be. Also this makes me really excited I would also love to offer a upcycle service

I read what you said about people cutting the tags off their luxury brand items and then giving them to thrift stores and not wanting resellers to get a profit out of it. It's a little bit petty, but I don't think it's because they think people who can't buy it at full price don't deserve to wear them. They are allowing thrift store customers to buy those clothes when they gift them to the thrift store, and I'm pretty sure they will be sold in the thrift store for lower prices than the resellers would sell them online. I think they cut the labels off because they don't want resellers to profit from them, and would rather have that the clothes go to someone directly who will wear them.
@Saint_Medusa
@Saint_Medusa 4 года назад
@@itsalwayshalloweenexceptwh5118 I agree but I'm specifically talking about people who would only rup the tag off because they specifically hated reseller. When you're clothes are going to places wear you buy them pound the tag doesnt matter also when reseller k ke something is more valuable they have a better chance of selling it
@itsalwayshalloweenexceptwh5118
@itsalwayshalloweenexceptwh5118 4 года назад
@@Saint_Medusa My country doesn't really have places that sell used clothing by the weight afaik. But I also think that doesn't really matter for the argument. I still get it when people remove the tag if they want the item to be loved and worn for what it is straight away instead of someone buying it to try and make a profit of it. Legally there's nothing wrong with second hand brand resellers who get their stock from thrift stores, some people will find it amoral though. So it's definitely an argument based on emotion, and that's why there's so many people who have different opinions about it.

I don't see why they have to chop up nice vintage clothes to redesign, it's already hard enough to buy nice vintage pieces at a good price without sellers coming in and washing out the market with their spliced up clothing. Just chop up newer pieces. Don't destroy well made history because you want to make a little money. Why destroy a 70 year old item of clothing instead of keeping it intact and letting someone else enjoy its quality when you can get similar textiles and fabrics in newer garments with no history and next to no value
@bananabrain2996
@bananabrain2996 4 года назад
I don't know if i really agree with chopping it up either, but making it out of new clothes would be pointless. It would be the opposite of sustainable
@thatguywithanumbrella
@thatguywithanumbrella 4 года назад
I get what you mean. but on the other hand, redesigning by nature doesn't have to remove history. look at Cinderella for example, I don't think the changes her mice friends made to her mother's dress took away the dress's history, but rather added another layer of history to it. the step sisters destroying the dress completely on the other hand.
@emjenkins464

It depends on what they're using. To take Gunne Sax, Laura Ashley or other high value sought after items would be a vintage and sustainability sin. I have an ultimate 80's barely worn Jaeger wool coat with a silk velvet collar (made and sold in the UK) for £90 while synthetic long tailored jackets are min £120 now. While it may have been recut, I think it would always be better to remain in it's Blade runner glory
@dannahbanana11235
@dannahbanana11235 4 года назад
Exactly what I was thinking. Remaking items is only optimal when the garment is unwearable, like half of it has been destroyed and you are using the remaining fabric, or similar situations. Or maybe tailoring it to fit you. But I cringe to see beautiful vintage garments torn apart to make some mediocre street fashion.
@dannahbanana11235
@dannahbanana11235 4 года назад
@Thora Friganza Exactly! The pieces they end up making are going to go out of fashion so fast, it's not worth it at all. Because people will just throw them out. Not to be unappreciative of the creativity these people have, but in ten years no one is going to want a jumpsuit you made out of old pillowcases. Not to wear, or even to collect. It'll end up in a landfill.

Congratulations for your dress ! It's great that you showed the begining of the show too. I find the bit about tagless clothing interesting, in my country, the luxury overstock reseller often scrible over the tag with permanent marker to show which brand it's from without "damaging" their reputation . About the man who bought the coats for a bargain price, it's intresting to know that stock space can be a big problem in larger city since having storing space is expensive, especially if nobody want to buy the items. I found about it in a begin japanology episode about second hand book shop.

Im one of those tailors who "flips" clothing :) its sad how unpopular it is in the US. People here literally support fast fashion out of convenience, i wish more people were given the basic design education needed to at least envision a thrifted item as something else 👀 like enough to help a seamstress understand. Like i think its unpopular here because people literally can't even imagine what they would do/ how they'd even make something better.

I think a really sad thing about that overstock is that those companies could easily release all those clothes to consumers for super low prices- but they won't, because it would flood the market with their brand and cheapen it. So instead they sell it to another store marked way down, where the label is removed and their 'brand' isn't damaged. But honestly, you can't even see the label when someone is wearing it most of the time, so why does it matter? Ugh. x.x
@LorieLynn
@LorieLynn 3 года назад
A ton of those stores just sell the overstock to another store with their label full in tact simply because they get a nice chunk of money from the stores that want them and the stock gets out of their stores and warehouses. It's not always about not flooding the market or cheapening the brand. It's sometimes just about limited storage space and not wanting to put in the effort to push old discounted stock over the new full price stock.

Disagree, making something out of already made clothes rather than just a huge piece of fabric is more difficult. With clothes there's less fabric to work with, seams to work around and planning where to cut so you don't take off too much fabric and essentially mess up the entire piece you were going to use since it wasn't cut properly. Not discrediting any work from either of them, but the other dress is more challenging imo

im new to your channel but i love your content so much! its so cool that you reacted to the full episode on here and not just the part where you were featured like many youtubers would. it gave me a chance to look at a show and many designers that i will now look into that i wouldnt have known about otherwise! im so excited to watch more of your content :D

I've made dresses from bed sheets before and you'd be surprise what you can turn into clothes.

Buying vintage clothes and using them ionly for materials is disrespectful to me. I wear vintage in my day to day life and love to see the cuts and the craftsmanship put into the pieces. They're just taking pieces of history and literally ripping them apart.

this video is so cute!! i love your design ;-; maybe in the future try to make your audio more similar to the video youre showing? It was a bit jarring bc you were louder than the show ;-;

I love ur channel and ur content and topics, one thing which bothers me a lot is when you mix a video of you with some archive video the difference in volume is like.. listening to music on spotify without paying, so music was on one volume and then the adds would suddenly explode. here you are on a high volume comparing to the material you add, I can hardly hear it

8:07 How recently was the Kawaii international video you're reacting to released? Shopping by appointment is becoming more common during the coronavirus pandemic. It made me feel a lot better about going to a clothing store when I had the whole place to just my household.

My Japanese teacher said that electric cars and hybrids are super popular and make up most cars in Japan? But I am not sure how true and how much is "most". So it would be likely they took electric vehicles making a smaller carbon foot print.

Really interesting video! Though as someone who is obsessed with dress history, the whole "Cutting up vintage clothes and making new clothes out of them" thing almost made me scream. It's great to do that with modern clothes, and the gods know we've got those in excess, but vintage clothes are a finite resource, and by cutting them apart even a little, you make them basically impossible for dress historians to study (which means a LOT of textile history gets lost really quickly, since it's not super likely to be written down). It's like remodeling a house to look super new and unique to you; fantastic to do with newer homes, but holy shit Please don't do that to an old one, it's irreplaceable!!
