I am in my high school's wind ensemble and marching band. I have perfect pitch. I was able to use it to transpose violin to clarinet for a mini orcestra in my church. It was fun, and that was how I discovered it. That said, I am bad at sight reading/singing

In the middle of my freshman year I sang an atonal canon for eat training. My teacher that year used to tell me as a joke that I'm better in atonal solfege than "normal" music :3

I was always good at Theory and sight-singing. I remember trying to match pitches as early as 3-4 years old but it wasn't until the end of my junior year of high school that my high school band director that both my sister and I have perfect pitch. I can't remember the names of the books that I used from the top of my head though. I had five ( I took Pre-Theory to freshen up certain things)Theory professors and all of them had their own style of teaching. My theory 4 professor Mr. Magellan always emphasized the importance of learning how to transpose( For Melodic Dictation, he would have us write the melody in one key but he would play it in a different key). Also, I learned Theory with movable do so then when I got to New World I had to learn Fixed do ( we would sing sometimes in my counterpoint class and that teacher her name was Dr. Susan Epstein-Garcia).😃❤️🎼🎶

Ok! So! I learned ear training (kinda) in middle school from my middle school band director. He would play on the piano and I would have to figure out the intervals and melodies and it all lead to developing a good sense of relative pitch. We didn't sing much (I started singing in my college classes with solfege) but all through middle and high school I had a great sense of relative pitch and when I went into college it was such an asset and I continue to tell my college friends that are just starting don't fear ear training and aural theory and music theory. Yes it's hard but it can be so much fun if you go in with an open mind. Most ppl that don't do well in my school have this mentality that theory is hard. And yes it is I failed my first theory course and had to retake it but now it's much less stressful if you go in with the idea that it's more fun than challenging. And for me not it is I love using aural theory in band and orchestra even listening to the crappy radio at work

I'm currently in my second semester of university, and we still use karpinski books in my aural course! I do have perfect pitch, but really struggle with chords and intervals. Karpinski was actually at my uni the other week which was really interesting.

Hey Joe, I just started my first semester at the University of North Texas, and we were assigned that same Music for Sight Singing Book, (although it's the ninth edition now lol). Fun fact, the author, Robert Ottman, was actually a professor at UNT, so it feels cool that someone that taught here has influenced musicians from other music schools through his textbooks. I looked towards the end of the textbook for fun, and got a little scared by the 12 tone rows and crazy rhythms by Stravinsky and Schoenberg and other composers I've never even heard of. Guess I better practice then.

I did Choir in high school and middle school, so I had a strong Solfege and Sight Singing background. I strongly recommend taking Choir in grade school and College because it is great practice for Ear training and Sight Singing!!! I actually had a lot of fun in ETSS and did pretty well all 4 semesters!!!

I was so pleased to see two Hungarian books! Here in my country solfege is compulsory when we learn to play instruments, and we are doing sight singing and earn training early on (or at least we did in my school). I think I still got the sight singing skills with solmization, but the ear training part is long gone. :D

Thanks for a great video as always! I attended NMU (Nelson Mandela University) and we had three basic parts: Dictation (tonal, atonal and 4-part tonal), sight-singing (tonal and atonal) and clapping. We used the following textbooks: 1. Maat en Ritme - Clapping (yep, that was a thing): www.bol.com/nl/p/maat-en-ritme-deel-2/9200000020441876/?suggestionType=browse 2. Van't Bladzingen - Sight singing: www.bol.com/nl/p/van-t-blad-zingen-deel-2/9200000020441880/ It was the subject I enjoyed least. Thankful its over!

That ear training manual and anthology are actually the exact same ones that I'm using! I also had my theory and ear training courses separated last year (my first year of my BMus) and my experience sounds pretty similar to yours! I have strong relative pitch but I still struggled a lot with dictation exams and sight singing. My prof also had us doing sight clapping/rhythm reading using the takadimi method which we had to do WHILE CONDUCTING. IT WAS HORRENDOUS. I once had such a hard time figuring out a rhythm that my prof actually had to walk me through the excerpt during my exam... Needless to say I ate my feelings that day. The excerpts with 2+ voices from the anthology were my prof's favourite to use when we were called to sing examples in front of the class. This was especially awful because naturally everyone progresses at their own pace and so are not all at the same level. PLUS many of us hated singing in front of each other. So pair stage fright with skill levels that don't align and you get an absolute train wreck of a singing example.... AND DONT EVEN GET ME STARTED ON SIGHT SINGING IN THE TENOR CLEF.

hi joanna just want to ask, i am going to self-teach myself how to play the flute, so do i first study solfege (using solfege de solfege by danhauser) then start the flute method, then music theory? that is what the brass band musicians here in the my city do -my dad included-. i have uncles who has completed the three danhauser books. is that a very advisable procedure?

lol I felt so bad bc I have perfect pitch and completely set the bar too high for the rest of my aural skills class. I ended up dropping it bc I changed my major, and apparently the ENTIRE class ended up failing. Lol rough year in the music department.

I live in Australia and do AMEB exams for the flute. In all the exams you have to do oral tests which I never really go the hang of. I am currently studying for 6th grade exam. I have definitely improved since when I started with the flute. Is there a Trevor Whye book for improving in oral activities?

Joanna, I have a real quick question about flutes and metals. Kinda off-topic here, but does the key metal affect the sound? I've been looking to buy a flute, and the price difference between the Miyazawa 602, and the Miyazawa Vision is pretty wide. 602 has plated keys, while the Vision has solid silver keys. is it worth the $4000 difference? :/ they're essentially the same flute otherwise.

I always feel so bad like I don't know music. I was first chair last year in school but I feel that I'm bad at clarinet because our school district is let's just say not the best in it's music section.

I was soooo bad at the sight singing, up until I was allowed to use my own syllables... Ear training? Intervals are HARD. Then again, its easier for me to recognize a not than an interval... I'm not even all that great at note recognition, its just that and rhythm are easiest for me, soooooo I try to construct the interval/chord based on keeping track of the notes... I wish I could do it the way they wanted us to, I just couldn't...

Hey Joanna,do you have any experience with all state auditions? Our music is really easy this year and I know there will be a lot more people auditioning because of that. I have had auditioned for 1st round last year for the district band(can't go into second round as a eighth grader). So this will be my first year going to second round and yes I'm a freshman. Thanks!
@JustAnotherFlutist
@JustAnotherFlutist 7 лет назад
Hm, I don't have experience with all state auditions, but I do have experience with auditions in general! ;) Rhythm is #1, and tone is #2. If you get those down, you're set ;)
@Mung_Beann
@Mung_Beann 7 лет назад
I have experience with all-state! Though, with the Washington All-state program. I've done it for 2 years and landed in concert band and symphony orchestra. What I've been told, is that the person reviewing your recording listens to see if you did what was written exactly on the page. Are you in tempo? are you at the correct tempo? are you playing the correct articulations and rhythms? and what I think is very important, are you doing your dynamics? The audition excerpts are often on youtube (sometimes you have to dig through the symphony). I highly recommend going through them if you don't have a lessons teacher, just be wary, the articulations and dynamics may not be the same as on your sheet music. I hope this helps! best of luck!
@markgaddie6290
@markgaddie6290 7 лет назад
Thanks! I have a weakness in articulation and that is a big part of our all state technical piece this year. Our lyrical piece is marked "dolce" I know it means sweetly but it's in the lower register and my lower register is very dark. So do you have any tips that could with specific tone color like that?
@Mung_Beann
@Mung_Beann 7 лет назад
I'd say a dark tone isn't bad. Dolce doesn't have to mean bright. But if you're wondering about playing with tone color, Id's say fiddle around with the shape inside your mouth. Dropping your jaw and widening that space or narrowing that space can change the color. Maybe try changing air speed, or covering more or less embouchure hole. What piece is the lyrical one? Hope this helps
@markgaddie6290
@markgaddie6290 7 лет назад
The lyrical piece is called Hungarian Serenade. And It's Pin Lento with every eighth note equals 72

Hello Joanna, I'm a flutist from Italy, have you ever heard about a famous Conservatory in Italy? What is in your opinion the best Conservatory in Italy?
@JustAnotherFlutist
@JustAnotherFlutist 7 лет назад
Hi there! Unfortunately, I'm unfamiliar with conservatories in Italy! The only one I've heard of is the one that my university (UBC Vancouver), worked with: Conservatorio di Musica G.F. Ghedini - Cuneo. We have a history of sending students to each other in a program called "Music Bridge". In my year, they sent over a student wind quintet to work with my wind quintet (Nachschlag)! :D
