This video shows a long struggle lasting for months with failures and nerve-racking turns but it turned out to be a happy end. I failed against UG, but I don't give up, we will meet each other soon. My plan B succeeded, a nice green, minimal aquarium with the Easter Island Moai Heads. It looks amazing. I could honestly say that in the end all the fight was worth it.
If you try the UG, read and educate yourself more than I did. If I figure out how to keep them alive, I will share it with you. Now let's scape.

Absolutely. You could remove the water and the same "scape" would cost you about 20 bucks. I don't understand the appeal of this type of scape and why it has to be an aquarium.

Johny couldn’t agree more . All my tanks have no co2 and I achieve pearling by using a good light and frequent water changes. Just to clarify - I wasn’t supporting use of expensive equipment. Just saying that hairgrass under water looks better than a scape without water 👍

You added too much ferts for UG, the ADA soil in itself is nutrient-rich. UG is a carnivore plant, it doesn't take nutrition from the soil, but from the microorganisms in water. Hence the excess of nutrients resulted in Algae formation. I do believe this would have looked much better with UG rather than the current one.
@Beregar79
@Beregar79 4 года назад
Eh I have never had any luck with UG. CO2 or NO CO2. Ferts or no ferts. Heavy soil or gravel and sand mix. Next to sun lit window or artificial light. I even tried it in pure peat slurry and as a floater and it still melted. Even the emersed setups. It's one of the plants I'd really love to keep but no luck so far. I haven't used RO water but my water if pretty soft with TDS of around 150 μS (GH ~4.7). Dechlorinated though the amount of chlorine is less than 0.05 ppm out of tap so I'm not sure if it even makes any diference. I got the same results even in my previous locale where they didn't even chlorinate the water at all. I wonder what's up with it.

Every rooted plant takes nutrition from the soil and the water column. It's just that U. Graminifolia supplements its nutrition by also being carnivorous, due to its natural environment having little nutrients. In an aquarium it prefers nutrients from the soil, so it is likely that the addition of liquid fertilizer caused the algae to grow.
@damiencasteel2754
@damiencasteel2754 4 года назад
@@jiin5993 Yes but I imagine, like terrestrial carnivorous plants, the soil does play a great deal. You want very nutrient poor soil, as well as RODI or distilled water for sundews, venus flytraps, etc. For these just a bit of peat moss and perlite is good. Barely any nutrients. So the soil, (and especially) plus the ferts, was the definite failure in this video. It might have worked with just the soil.
@Tser
@Tser 3 года назад
I keep my UG in plant-only setups and it's like a weed, like my other Utrics. I have to keep it away from my other bog and carnivorous plants or it'll end up in every pot. (There are certainly more difficult to keep Utricularia species out there, I don't have any of them. I'm far from a Utric expert.) I tend to keep the TDS under 45, and the planting medium I use is nutrient free. I've never attempted to keep it with animals pooping in the water, or with non-carnivorous companion plants that would require fertilizing. I expect that makes it a lot more difficult. I think in an aquascape, keeping only soft water, low-bioload animals (perhaps shrimp) would probably help it be successful.

I really appreciate seeing the struggle in this video. As someone new to the hobby, it's comforting that I'm not the only one who struggles with decisions like soil and plants and how many ferts to add. I liked the turn out on this build. I am more of a nature style guy, but I think this build is pretty neat in its own right. I also think this build is probably cooler in person than it is on screen. Thanks for the look into the creative process!

yeah the ferts are what did it for the UG, I was fortunate in that I already kept other carnivorous plants and knew in general they didn't like ferts. What might have helped mine as well is I had a healthy amount of copopods, I think that's why mine has grown so well as that's where the UG gets it's nitrates from

last week I had a large growth of green algae; on all the glass, leaves and on the moss I planted on the bottom of the aquarium (20 liters), a big mess, manually was impossible to remove all of them. So, I moved all the water snails I had from an old aquarium to this one. after less than 5 days there was no longer any trace of green algae; I was really impressed by the unexpected usefulness of those little creatures. sadly I didn't takes photo of the situation 'before' and 'after' to show

1. This soil is very soft and powdery, You used a lot of soil in shallow tank so you should change water minimum 3 times a week in first month. 2. UG really don't like Nitrogen. 3. Soil + liquid fertz killed the UG then dead UG feed algea ( aquarium wasn't cycled and that give additional algea boost) 4. UG is very problematic in fresh aquarium because they aren't consume high nitrogen at the start and as you know that is the main problem with "uncycled" aquarium. Anyway i really like your "story" in videos! You are really PRO videomaker :).

1. Would it be better to use the lava rock in filter bags? 2. I agree on the difficulty in setting the right CO2 levels for small aquariums, do you use the drop checker or take pH readings or both to figure out the optimum bps rate? 3. 10:10 the angle and the reflection of the green from plants and the red from the substrate is just outright beautiful. Wonderfully captured. 4. So proscapes also go though some of the problems of the common folk!!! But yes, the statues look so much better in green.

Oily film usually means the pump is leaking. In fact,you might not notice until you shut power off..THEN it appears,right? It's like as long as the pump is going,no leak..with no resistance due to power off,water gets in the "sealed housing",and that super light oil gets out. The pump could still work years if its just occasional.

thnx for another great vid! i wonder if you could give me some advice. i set up a 6.5 gallon no-co2 low tech tank with external filter. i used ada power sand advance in the bottom, topped with ada tropical river soil (reddish tone like the powder you use in this vid). my hardscape are 2 large ohko stones and a couple small pieces of drift wood. it's been 18 days now and i'm beginning to see a film of oil on top of water, while most plants are melting away. i've been doing 50% water (tap water with 7.8ph) changes every other day the first week, then every 3rd day the 2nd week. when i did water tests on day 15 i found the ph was at 6, kh & gh at 3, and tds 65. so prob the acidity melted the plants. my local aquarium store adviced me to do a 75% water change, which i did on day 15, and the ph went up to 6.8. then not even 12 hours later the ph dropped back to 6. i replaced new floor grass plants in it on day 15 and they are not looking too good. i use a twinstar led light 4 hours each day the first 2 weeks, and 5 hours this 3rd week. my vision is a heavy planted tank, eventually with a small school of neon tetras and a few shrimp (i'm open to either neos or caradinas). any advice is much appreciated. thnx, david the yogi from san francisco
